The 3-D holographic image sparkles into life, and you settle back to enjoy the latest game show. Game shows have changed.

These days people just don't seem to be interested in greed any more. They want violence. Which explains why The Killing Game Show is at the top of the ratings. The rules of the show are simple. Contestants are surgically implanted into an armoured bio-mech unit, and lowered into a pit full of deadly artificial life forms.

The pit gradually fills with poisonous sludge, so there's only one way to go. Onwards and upwards, ledge to ledge all the while fending off attacking waves of electronic killers. As you'd expect, very few people volunteer to appear on Tlie Killing Game Show. Most contestants are supplied by the Police Corporation they're usually lawbreakers and dissidents who deserve everything they get. The Amiga version of Tlie Killing Game Show has just been released by British software house Psygnosis.

Regular gamers will know that Psygnosis has a reputation for producing technically excellent games with brilliant Roger Dean-inspired graphics all they lacked was decent gameplay. Their games looked Illustration by JUDY DUNN damage. These guys mean business. Let me out. I'll take back all the nasty things I said about Alyce Piatt's dress sense.

I promise. Graphics in Tlie Killing Game Show are highly detailed. Animation is smooth. And the soundtrack is brilliant. I've just linked my Amiga 2500 to an old hi-fi system a Sansui AU-101 15 watt amplifier and a pair of small speakers.

The effect is sensational. The music is fast paced and tense, and the optional sound effects add realism and drama. Mind you, regular reader Rhonwen M. McCormack will not be impressed. Ms McCormack complained last week that this column is full of "war, shoot-'em-ups and space And to this I plead guilty.

At least today. The Killing Game Show is clearly just a warmongering space invaderish shoot-'em-up. But a darn good one. Next week, Rhonwen, we will deal with something more civilised. I promise.

The Killing Game Show is distributed in Australia bv Mindscape International (telephone 02 899 2277), and is not available in Commodore 64 format. great, they were clever, but they were no fun to play. That's changed. The Killing Game Show is fast, slick and compelling. The technical polish is still there, the graphics are still top class but above all, the game is fun.

A brilliantly animated five-minute opening sequence fills one complete disk in the two-disk set. It's certainly atmospheric, though by next week I will be wishing I didn't have to sit through it every time I boot the game. The credits roll, the show begins, and I'm at the bottom of the pit. In my bio-mech armour I'm unrecognisable I look like a cross between a frog and a tractor, which my wife says is a definite improvement. The pool of glistening slime is rising fast.

I move to the right, my bio-mech legs carrying me in an ambling, spring-like gait. A bit of extra bounce and I'm on the ledge above. Suddenly, I'm under attack from a wave of flying nasties. My built-in weapons reduce them to fragments but not before they cause some minor SANCOM Industrial Scientific Division 02 742 5455 Environment Proof Computers Peripherals Control Monitoring Interface Designed and manufactured by Sancom in Australia TRAINING SHOWROOMS SALES OFFICES Open to 5om SAT to 12 CHATSWOOD 413 2929 ENFIELD 742 5455 HURSTVILLE 579 3377 LIVERPOOL 602 9088 PYRMONT 552 1640 Mount Gravatt QLD 343 2844 SERVICE CENTRE HEAD OFFICE 43 Ccsgrove Road Enfield NSW Te: 742 5188 O-ii FRSALfiS 742 5455 Fax 642 0228 LEARN TO USE COMPUTERS QUICKLY Hands-on Training Modern computers Beginners and Advanced courses Qualified Trainers Courses designed to be of Immediate Practical Benefit Courses conducted at North Sydney and University of Sydney Word Perfect. Bolt wrote in A Man for All Seasons: "The law is a causeway upon which, so long as he keeps to it, a citizen may walk safely." Brecht, in The Tlireepenny Opera, thought that "the law is simply and solely made for the exploitation of those who do not understand it or of those who, for naked need, cannot obey Being something of a curmudgeon lean towards the latter definition. A number of citizens and companies that fell off the causeway of the law in the past week: Milton Nance of North Versailles in Pennsylvania is not a fictional creation in a Thurber short story. Instead he is a citizen who has been in durance vile since February on a computer crime charge and is now being arraigned on a further 27-count fraud indictment. Nance is alleged to have fanged more than through a computer fraud scheme through which he got into Citibank's system and issued himself with a credit card. The US Attorney's office has cheered up his time in chokey on remand by letting the press know he is up for 1 74 years in prison and fines of million if convicted on all charges.

Dennis Hayes of Cincinnati has admitted he made counterfeit computer chips and sold them for half a million dollars. He now faces up to 26 years in prison and a fine. It is alleged that Hayes sold about 5,000 sets of counterfeit Macintosh 128K Rom chips between 1988 and 1990, giving him gross receipts of about $500,000. To counterfeit the chips, it is alleged, Hayes purchased blank chips, removed the manufacturer's name and silk-screened them with the Apple logo, copyright information and parts numbers to make them appear genuine. Haves is said to have sold the chips for SUS95 to SUSI30 per set.

FBI agents claim that in a raid on Hayes's home, they seized a computer and other electronic equipment, more than $US 180,000 in cash and four Uzi semi-automatic guns. Hayes's Piper Comanche airplane was also seized. Texas Instruments is accusing Dell Computer of patent infringement. Dell said it had been discussing the patent question with Tl since April, so the suit "was unexpected and inconsistent with statements made by TI in those Such royalties are important to Tl. Since 1986, it has made more than $600 million in royalty revenues.

TI has signed licensing agreements for its microprocessor systems with companies such as IBM and Compaq and it now is seeking similar agreements with those who make IBM compatibles. Tandy recently sued Tl accusing it of demanding unreasonably high royalty payments and forcing Tandy to buy licences it didn't need. The story is being put around that TI wants a 10 per cent royalty on any device using its chips. In Hong Kong, the Business Software Alliance has settled its suit against Cresvale Far East. (02)413 3563 In New Jersey, Jeffrey Land, former director of data management for the New Jersey Assembly Republicans, is co-operating make of the word what you will, for it has many levels of meaning with New Jersey State Attorney General Robert Del Tuffo's investigation of alleged computer malfeasance. This scandal is being referred to locailv as "Computergate" by the local press and the allegation is that Land had broken into confidential files maintained on a Wang minicomputer and read more than 1,000 documents maintained by the Democratic party on the system. Adding to the colourful language of the courts we have what has been called the case of the Super Mario Brothers versus Bart Simpson.

(For those of you ho do not keep up ith these matters the names refer to characters in Nintendo games.) In this the House of Representative's Judiciary Committee has removed a provision banning software rental from the Software Protection Bill. Nintendo's powerful lobbying forces made much of the fact that phonograph and CD records can't be rented because that would violate the artists" copyright rights. Nintendo's opponents, mainly the very large video rental chains which in the US now realise nearly 15 per cent of their revenue from game cartridge rentals, counter that it is virtually impossible for the average user to copy a Nintendo game. A society called the Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility has filed suit for release of information on whether the FBI operates a clandestine computer bulletin board system and routinely monitors other bulletin boards. In addition, CPSR has requested "all materials relating to the FBI's, collection of information" from computer networks and bulletin boards such as PeaceNet in San Francisco, and The Well in Berkeley.

California. It also wants the same information about the FBI's activities regarding bulletin board systems used by 28 specific political organisations, including Action Southern Africa, AIDS Coalition Network, the American Peace Test, Central America Resource Network and National Execution Alert Network. The second largest shareholder in ASK Computer Systems has filed a lawsuit claiming that the proposed sale of SUS60 million of ASK stock to EDS and Hewlett-Packard, and its proposed SUS110 million purchase of Ingres is not fair. A jury has decided that Advanced Micro Devices infringed three patents owned by Brooktree and also infringed mask work rights of Brooktree under the Semiconductor Chip Protection Act.
