The Sydney Morning Herald SPORT Tuesday, September 27, 1994 6 I IN BRIEF SIM Menzies sickie to chucks a win gold declines to rat n. the RUGBY PHIL WILKINS other Warringah men in props Ray Smith and George Websdale will accompany the Emerging Wallabies when they fly out on Thursday morning for the six-game tour. Apps hails from Tuggeranong club, this year's premiers in the ACT. Second-rower Craig Sweeny, who played for Manly last year, and strong-running winger Joe Roff also play for Tuggeranong. With Eastern Suburbs' Wallaby back-rower and captain Michael Brial unable to take part in the first game through social engagement Queensland breakaway Brett Robinson will lead the Emerging Wallabies against the Zimbabwean national team on Saturday.

Robinson has had one game for Australia when he replaced the injured Gordon breakaway Tony Dempsey in France last year, playing against a Regional XV for the Wallabies. Coach John Connolly's overriding concern must be how the tight five will adapt to the unrelenting pressure of power and experience in Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa. Tight-heads Andrew Blades and Websdale have a huge responsibility in stabilising the scrum. The deficiency of the Australian representative system, with Reeve (20) A Reeve (19) 57. Lynda Folauhola (SA) 270.24 Betty Menzies was in hospital two hours after winning the first gold medal of the World Masters Games in Brisbane yesterday. The excited 50-year-old Brisbane athlete provided the first upset, beating 1964 Olympic 400m bronze medallist Judy Pollock in the 50-55 age section of the 10km cross-country. Menzies wasn't a patient, however. She was back at work as a senior researcher for the Queensland University's Department of Surgery at Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital. Menzies took a half-day "sickie" but rushed back after the race with her cherished gold medal safely tucked away in a training bag.

MI never expected to win, I'm thrilled," said Menzies, born in Rotorua, New Zealand, and a Townsville resident before shifting to Brisbane. "I had to reschedule a couple of early patient appointments." Menzies only learnt yesterday she would be competing against a track legend in Pollock. Pollock was beaten by Betty Cuthbert at the Tokyo Olympics and at her peak was the world's fastest woman over 440 yards. "I read in the paper yesterday that Judy Pollock was in the race and I thought how wonderful it would be just competing against someone like her," Menzies said. "We all asked around at the start of the race today who she was and where she was, but nobody owned up.

"But she came up to me after the race and spoke to me. She's a very nice lady." Menzies won gold in 46m 02s, finishing more than two minutes ahead of Pollock, who competed CSKA Moscow 25 9 9 11 21 28 19 lada Togliatti 25 5 9 It 18 33 19 Stavropol 25 3 11 11 17 31 17 SOFTBALL STATE LEAGUE: Div 1 Men: Giants 8 Pumas 6. The dashing fullback experienced the frustration of playing in the grand final in his initial season in Sydney club rugby only for Randwick and David Campese to dash Warringah's dreams, his inclusion in the touring side to Africa only slightly diminishing the bitterness of defeat "I'm happy to put the rumours behind me," Apps said after a rigorous four-hour training session at Coogee yesterday. "I've thought about it all season and it was only in the last fortnight I decided to stay with Warringah. The club has been great They're happy and I'm happy.

You don't have winter here for one thing." Apps, 25, had 1 6 representative games for the Australian Capital Territory in 1991-93, following Matthew Pini north. From his new Brisbane base, Pini has become Test fullback, the position Apps has his eyes on for South Africa next May. "A lot of people are vying for the fullback position," Apps said. "Everyone is looking at our tour to Africa as a stepping stone to the World Cup." Apps joined Warringah along with two Queenslanders, halfback Mark Catchpole and centre Jim Williams. Catchpole and two 6.
