Wednesday, June 9, 1982 REPUBLIC OThe Arizona Republic emu fAL ate KPNX-TV (Chan KOOL-TV nel 12). "The Chauncey organization ran a good operation, were good Continued from Al cowboy" in motion pictures became partners when they purchased radio station KPHO in 1941. They purchased KOOL Radio in 1948 and 'founded KOOL-TV in 1953. News of the sale was greeted with sadness by those in the broadcasting community. Gene Jankowski, president of the CBS Broadcast Group, reported that the network was informed of the sale Tuesday morning by Lane.

Reached in New York, Jankowski said, "Tom Chauncey and his people have run a top-quality operation that has served the city of Phoenix extremely well for many years. They've been an outstanding affiliate." Local TV competitors also had kind words for Chauncey. "I'm sorry to see it happen," said C.E. "Pep" Cooney, general manager of NBC affili competitors and very responsible broadcasters." Jack Jacobson, station manager of KTVK-TV, said, "I guess this leaves KTVK-TVasthe only totally Arizona-owned-and-operated station. We hate to see Tom Chauncey gone.

He's a fine man, a credit to the industry. He's done a lot for mMmtlte WCREEII SAVU ENERGY Autry and Gulf United of racketeering, breach of contract, defamation of character, intentional interference with busi- "ness and attempted theft by extortion. As part of the agree-ment, both lawsuits re-' ported ly will be dropped if the FCC approves the sale, a process that nor-1- mally takes a minimum of 60 days. Chauncey said the specter of a long and I costly legal battle prompted him to sell, but he traced the evolu- tion of the sale back to a decision by Autry and his desire that his 200- plus employees work in an atmosphere free of outside interference. "Five years ago, Mr.

Autry wanted to start selling his stock. It's been five years now, and another five years was not appealing. I wanted them to have a decent place to work." he said. "If I owned 100 percent, I never would have sold i it. When Gene sold his 1 stock, I did not have much choice." Chauncey said he was saddened by the sale.

"I'm like the guy who saw his mother-in-law going over the hill with his Rolls-Royce," he said. "I'm sad. It's been my life. "That was not like a business. It was a family.

It was unlike any other station in America. I couldn't do anything about it. I fought it for a long time. "It was a hell of a ride. It's a long way from that freight train I came in here on," said Chauncey, who was reached at his home Tuesday evening.

Chauncey came to Ar-izona from Texas aboard a freight train when he was 13 years old and became a pageboy at the old Adams Hotel. A year later, he bacame an apprentice jeweler and, in the late 1930s, opened his own jewelry store. Chauncey and Autry then "the singing llllllllllllll SUH SCREEN SAVINGS 50-APS CREDIT 25 -AR. ST.
