Gene Jankowski, president of the CBS Broadcast Group, reported that the network was informed of the sale Tuesday morning by Lane.

Reached in New York, Jankowski said, "Tom Chauncey and his people have run a top-quality operation that has served the city of Phoenix extremely well for many years. It was unlike any other station in America. I couldn't do anything about it. I fought it for a long time. "It was a hell of a ride. It's a long way from that freight train I came in here on," said Chauncey, who was reached at his home Tuesday evening.

Chauncey came to Ar-izona from Texas aboard a freight train when he was 13 years old and became a pageboy at the old Adams Hotel.
