Drama. Programs supplied by TV channels. SUBJECT TO LATE ALTERATIONS. Subtitles, for the hearing-Impaired. 5.00 Golden age of Bugs Old year on the rocks Rewind '94 On Ten at 7.30 pm Viewers can shut their eyes and see this program coming at them full tilt.

There is little that will surprise. We have seen it all and most of it many times. So this is 1994 served straight on the rocks with absolutely none of the humour that Clive James will undoubtedly provide when he goes to work for the BBCABC with his annual special on New Year's Day. Of course, there were the bushfires (we were not alone: Colorado had terrible mid-year wildfires in which 14 people died), there was the volcanic eruption in Rabaul, the earthquake in Los Angeles (how did that policeman manage to drive over the edge; was he looking at the cameras rather than where he was Then there was President Mandela, Tonya Harding, Diana and Charles and Priscilla. Not forgetting Senor Skase.

Happy new one. Robin Oliver Of course, this synthetic creation could be no more than the sum of the respective talents behind the pens, brushes, microphones and story-boards. But if Bugs was limited only by the imaginations of directors like Jones, Tex Avery, Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett and the incredible vocal gymnastics of Mel Blanc, then he was also an infinitely malleable creation. Bugs was a different character in the hands of each director and each of them reveal their own wholly individual interpretations. The cartoons veer wildly between slapstick and surrealism.

It is arguable what is most appealing about the rabbit but during the '40s, when 30 Bugs films were made in five years, at least some of it must have lain in his wicked contrast to the wholesome image of his rivals at Walt Disney Studios. Just try not laughing at Corny Concerto, the parody of Disney's enormously pretentious Fantasia. Paul Pottinger What's Up Doc: A Tribute To Bugs Bunny On ABC at 8.30 pm AT ONE point during a break in this tapestry of Bugs Bunny cartoons, the great director Chuck M. Jones informs us that "at no point did I think we were doing this for children''. What a relief! Thousands of us can now come out openly instead of pretending we watch them only with our kids when they wake up early on Saturday mornings.

Or maybe not Maybe it's just me But somehow, I think not Bugs is pretty legendary and he is done justice by this vivid and exhaustive commemorative documentary. A fine full-length selection of cartoons is presented, tracing the astonishingly rapid development from the early and crude works to what is legitimately referred to as the "golden age" during the mid- to late-1940s. ANOTHER year, another wallow in life's miseries (heaps of them), disasters (masses of those), murders and mayhem (and O. too), grizzly finds in forest and backyard, earthquakes (the Pacific plate and the Asian plate collided and jelly don't shake like that) and to cheer us all up, Anne Fulwood, looking good, quite super, in fact, as she remarks how so many people's lives have been shaped differently as a result of 1994. Fulwood's, too.

The people at Ten were approaching daftness when they sent her to Canada to co-host the Commonwealth Games. That was tantamount to landing an excellent newsreader in a pretty kettle of fish. Fulwood is recovering from that setback (her ratings, once golden, suddenly bronzed) and now she dishes out pictures of a year that will never look the best of vintages.
