It was Oakes who had recently said in a magazine article that Martin should have been made to serve her full 18 months suspension for allegedly taking steroids instead of being allowed back inside the period. Martin broke the Games record with her first attempt of 18.59m. Oakes broke it twice more with 18.71m and 18.75s and finally Martin pumped out one on her penultimate effort of 19m precisely.

At her press interview later Martin, who had been so breezy, stiffened at one point and said drily: "I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Judith Oakes for the remarks she has been making about me "For giving me this extra ''I AT EDINBURGH 54.95s, breaking her own Games record of 55.89s set in Brisbane. That is a long-way outside her recent 53.76s in Oslo, which was a Commonwealth record and a time which East Germany's Sabine Busch and the Soviet pair of Marg Arita Khromova and Marina Stepanova have bettered. Although Flintoff emphasised that winning, not records, was more important here I expect Busch's world record to come her way before long. After yesterday's win her immediate reaction was one of relief. 6 Everyone kept Debbie Flintoff carries an Australian flag on her lap of honour after winning the 400m hurdles for her second gold medal in two days.

EDINBURGH, Tuesday: One is planning to marry and the other to climb the Himalayas. But Debbie Flintoff and Gael Martin scaled a few peaks for themselves and for Australia at the Commonwealth Games yesterday. They are Australia's sticks of double dynamite because Martin's victory in the shot and FlintofTs in the 400m hurdles at Meadow-bank gave them both gold medals on successive days. Flintoff, 26, has now set herself to walk (or rather run) away from these Games with three gold medals since she will anchor Australia's team in the 4 400m relay on Saturday. After that she is taking a few months off and switching her thoughts to something which will have the same lasting effect that these Games will have on her life.

She is to marry her coach, Phil King, on November 7 at a small church at Mt Eliza, on the Mornington Peninsula, in front of about 60 people. Then it will be back to the tiny cottage in a far corner of the mixed farm King's parents have at the tongue-twister of a settlement nearby called Moorooduc, where Debbie is the idol of the 400 population. Theirs is a unique coaching arrangement. Phil has never coached anyone else. Nor does he want to.

And from working together they fell in love. But wedding gowns weren't on her mind yesterday. What was was making sure that she did not blow her pet event after winning the 400m flat final on Sunday. She tried to play down the first success, stay calm (which is hard for someone who talks so rapidly) and stick to her race plan. It all worked perfectly, despite the fact that Flintoff used a new stride pattern.

For the first time she took 15 strides to the fourth obstacle then switched to her normal 16 because she was tending to overrun the. hurdles. The rest of the field served only as ladies-in-waiting as the queen swept by and went on to win in to trim down from her 90kg in readiness for her hike through the Himalayas. The world's greatest all-round athlete, Daley Thompson, went on to win the decathlon majestically with 8,663 points 490 ahead of the next competitor after losing only two of the 10 events. Australian competitors Stuart Andrews and Simon Shirley finished fifth and eighth behind him respectively.

Another Australian, Ken Gordon, could not go on with it in the 400m hurdles final after looking strong coming into the straight. He weakened to trail the field home in 51.59s in a race surprisingly won by the Irish redhead Phil Beattie in 49.60s. Most other Australians who performed yesterday progressed well. John Dinan, who looked gold medal material with his 20.99s, Miles Murphy and Robert Stone are all through to the semi-finals of the 200m. Maree Chapman is in the women's 200m final while Julie Schwass and Pat Scammell are through to the 800m finals.

The men's 800m semi-finals succeeded only in whetting appetites for the first showdown between England's Seb Coe and Steve Cram on Thursday. Cram won the first semi-final stylishly in 1m 48.71s while Cram took it easier in the faster semifinal to finish behind team-mate Peter Elliott (1:47.42) and Canada's Simon Hoogewerf. Coe has had a throat virus for a few days is hoping the two-day break in the track and field events will allow him to get over it by Thursday. This is the most-awaited match of the season Coe, the double Olympic champion up against Cram, the world, European and Commonwealth champion. Edinburgh is getting a Coe-Cram duel not just once but twice because they will be in action in Thursday's 800m as well as Saturday's saying 'you're going to win you're going to win' and I suppose it's only natural that doubts come into your mind.

Panayi to retire after the dive of his life By MICHAEL VI SO NT AY EDINBURGH, Tuesday Shaun Panayi made the greatest dive of his life last night to win the Commonwealth Games springboard competition and announced that he would retire Her the world championships, in Madrid next month. The Victorian teacher, who finished only seventh in the same event four years ago, could not have chosen a better note on which to leave. It would be hard to imagine a more sensational victory Australia's first in Commonwealth Games diving since 1974. With one round to go Panayi, 23, was in second place, a whopping seven points behind Canadian John Nash, who had led the field for nost of the competition. Nash seemingly confirmed his victory when he scored a formidable 68.73 points on his last dive a forward one-and-a-half somersault with three twists.

This meant that Panayi, whose turn was next, needed more than 76 points to win. He chose the same dive and executed it so perfectly that he made almost no splash. The cheers and whistles of the pro-Australian crowd turned to a roar as his score went up: 76.56. Panayi had won by 0.69 of a point. The final scores were Panayi 648.33, Nash 647.64 and 21 -year-old Queensland student Craig Rogerson 620.43, just ahead of veteran Stephen Foley (619.47).

"It was the best dive of my life, for sure," Panayi beamed. "I have never got that many points for a dive before." After Nash's dive Panayi the name is Greek but his parents are English did not hold much hope and decided he would just go out and "do my "After the dive I heard the scores but didn't really take notice of them until someone told them to me," he said. "I heard a couple of cheers and then went blank." His total was a Commonwealth Games record and 30 points more than his previous best. Foley, 27, who has been competing for more than 10 years, recovered from a poor first day to be in fourth place going into the last round. The dual silver medallist in Brisbane produced a very strong dive under pressure to earn 71.40 points, which he thought would lift him to third.

But Rogerson, whose dives had hovered around the 63 points mark in the latter rounds, made his best dive of the day to score 71.34 and secure the bronze. Queenslander Valerie Beddoe, the defending champion, turned in a Panayi-like last round dive to edge out fellow Queenslander Julie Kent for the silver medal. Beddoe, 25, trailed Kent, 21, by 6.60 points before the last round, but scored 10 points higher than her less experienced team-mate to clinch second. The event was won easily by Canadian Fuller, who totalled 431.61 points in her eight dives. Beddoe-was on 414.78 and Kent on 411.18.

The third Australian diver, Carol Boots, 26, also from Queensland, finished eighth. Cycling hits out EDINBURGH, Tuesday: Australia's Commonwealth Games cyclists have run foul of officialdom again and it has cost them another $210. It is the second time in as many days Games authorities have slapped a fine on the Australians, who could still have the last laugh by making a clean sweep of the track program. But the Australian cycling team manager, Jock Bullen, yesterday paid out the equivalent of $315 to the Panel of Commissaires which runs track racing at the Games. "The fines are far too harsh way overboard but I think it was a politically wise decision to pay up," Bullen said.

He did not mention the chief commissaire for the Edinburgh Games, Scotsman Gerry McDaid, would also hold that position at next month's world cycling championships in Colorado. McDaid fined the Australians strength to really win this gold medal." It has been her dream to do the same as Jane Haist, of Canada, who won both discus and shot gold medals during the 1974 Commonwealth Games. So it was "absolutely the happiness" she had ever been. Asked about the future, she said: "My husband NigelJ has been working two jobs. We're going to buy a four-wheel drive and go away every weekend.

"I might even go climb the Himalayas next year and in the next couple of years I might even have some babies. "But I'd really like to move down to Tasmania and settle there." Martin went out last night to have a few beers, which she loves as much as her athletics, and plans "I'm really pleased it's over-because I felt there was a bit of pressure on me," she said. "Everyone kept saying 'you're going to win you're going to win' and I suppose it's only natural that doubts come into your mind. "So I had to stick to my race pattern and I did." The silver medal went to Don-alda Duprey, of Canada, with Jenny Laurendet giving Australia the bronze. Martin, 30 next month, will now retire after a superb international career which has spanned four Commonwealth and two Olympic Games and brought her 28 national titles.

There was also an Olympic bronze medal for the discus in Los! Angeles and now her third Commonwealth Games gold. Farmer Phil makes this gold count EDINBURGH, Tuesday: The disappointment of losing a Commonwealth Games gold medal on countback was erased for farmer Phil Adams yesterday. Adams won the gold in the centre fire pistol pairs at Musselburgh, near here, with West Australian Rodd Hack. Adams, from Forbes, NSW, had already won a bronze medal in the free pistol teams. Yesterday he won the silver in the air-pistol pairs with Neil Favell, losing the gold on a countback.

Adams, a gold medallist at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, teamed with Hack to become the first Australians to be successful in Edinburgh. Adams and Favell beat England's Bob Northover and Michael Cutler. New Zealanders Rex Hamilton and Barry O'Neale were third. The evening began splendidly for Australia with Rob Gleria, Peter Dale and Tom Stachewicz taking all three medals in the 200m freestyle. The unusual combination of God and Madonna contributed mightily to the victory of Gleria, who was lucky to be in Edinburgh, let alone the race. He failed to qualify for Edin manager at fines 1 00 Swiss francs 1 05) on Sunday for scratching two riders Martin Vinnicombe and Max Rainsford from the sprint. McDaid was unmoved by Bul-Ien's explanation that the riders were too tired after their gold and bronze medal-winning efforts the previous night and had been entered in the first place only to help make up numbers depleted by the Games boycott. McDaid struck again yesterday, imposing a fine of 200 Swiss francs ($210) for having failed to present a machine for examination before a race and arriving late at the starting line.

The incident occurred before the first quarter-final of the individual pursuit in which Victorian Rik Patterson was eliminated. Patterson was forced to dismount on the starting line and his bike was returned to the technical examiners. swimmers, was said to be A record Games time of Imin 50.57s -was Gleria's ultimate silencer. Gleria said that before the race he had put on his Walkman and listened to Madonna to shut out everything and concentrate on the race. A relieved Buck said: "I had to play God and put Rob in the race.

I have just, won my first sermon." The rival cheer squads were appreciably less thunderous last night. Perhaps the Queen's presence had a steadying influence. Would that her Majesty attended every session of the swimming. England 17 Hong Kong 25. Guernsey 20 Fiii 13.

After being invited to attend the post-medal ceremony press conference the volatile Thompson reportedly told press liaison officer Colin Shields: No, I bloody won't." Mr Shields said he asked Thompson again, but was told: "Don't you understand the bloody English language? I told you I bloody wasn't coming. Now piss off."
