Proxmire, Wiley Differ on Durfee WASHINGTON Wisconsin's Senators were on opposite sides of the fence again today in the nomination of James Durfee to the U. S. Court of Claims. Sen. William Proxmirc (JJAVis) called on President Eisenhower Durfee to the $25,500 a year post, while Sen.

Alexander Wiley (R- Wis) urged quick Senate confirmation. Proxmire said that Eisenhower should follow up his acceptance of the resignation of Federal Communications Commission chairman John Doerfer by withdrawing Durfee's nomination. Wiley said in a report for the Senate Judiciary Committee Which approved the choice of Durfee, tha.t the group found the presidential nominee well fitted for the post. Durfee, now chairman of the Civil Aeronatutics Board, is a former resident of Antigo, Wis. Doerfer, who resigned his FCC post after disclosures he accepted hospitality of a television and radio owner, also is from Wisconsin.

Proxmire has opposed confirmation of Durfee, contending he violated the CAB code of ethics in accepting hospitality from several airlines. Durfee claims he accepted no unusual hospitality. "The resignation of Dr. Doerfer was amply justified," Proxmire said. "His breach of ethics in taking pleasure cruises with a wealthy owner of TV and radio stations subject to Doerfer's regulation was absolutely wrong.

"But Mr. Durfee's actions are substantially more serious because he violated the specific written code of ethics of the agency he heads." Humphrey Tours S. E. Wisconsin By The Associated Press Sen. Hubert H.

Rep. John B. Bennett (R-Mich.) also sharpely challenged Harris' authority in throwing a secrecy curtain around subcommittee information about Clark's activities. Specifically, Bennett assailed as "false and misleading" a current memorandum cutting off other subcommittee members from files on Clark. Harris, in an obvious rebuke to Bennett, issued a memorandum Friday night ordering subcomit- tee chief counsel Robert W.

Lishman to bar everyone except subcommittee staff investigtaors from the Clark files. Bennett, contending the order violates House rules, said flatly he has no of observing it.
