The Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday, August 30, 1986 Page 38 1 3 PTTTPW The swashbuckling Cap'n Jane cuts a swathe through visual sugar -nm I ll 1 II I And anaesthetised sensibilities of generations brought up on highly refined visual sugar can't take much disturbance. No surprise that Australia's most plausible (comfortable) public figure is Brian Henderson. He doesn't do anything alarming or threatening, but TV EXTIUl that really count: the bigger and emptier the vessel, the more dollars it's possible to pour down the lavatory. On reflection, perhaps this apparent discrimination isn't such a bad thing. After all, the theatre-lovers of North Queensland are surely in for a treat: an interesting and relatively new play featuring Cilento and Frances, when they might, if policy were different, have had to sit through She Stoops to Conquer.

Unfortunately, Slate of the Arts didn't have time for such ramifications on this occasion. If they had it would surely have been to ponder the flipside of the pleasure-doubled syndrome. And that brings us back to actors on TV. Cornelia Frances's ability on a stage is still over-shadowed by her role in 17ie Young Doctors and she'll be sold likewise for years to come, sucn are the exigencies of the modern theatre box office. The ads for Are You Lonesome Tonight? feature Martin (The Professionals) Shaw, even though he hung up his gun and sexy pout years ago and is unknown in this country for anything else.

Peta (I didn't say crocodiles stink, honest) Toppano, on the other hand, has even more to live with. At least Diane Cilento's work for the Rare narrative, drama, scandal, laughs and minimum viewer effort. News and current affairs have come to be treated and consumed in the same way. The result is deleterious not only on "news" subjects but also on the people who work in the field. Stories, trom Dickens to 60 Minutes.

have a beginning, a middle and an end, usually with a dollop of dramatic tragedy or scandal on top. If they don't then they're avant garde and, per se, difficult. Real life is rarely so neat, and certainly not within the limited and frantic time-scale of a news deadline. Conventional thinking has it that this is not good enough. It's only necessary to look as far as the first series of Street Blues, with its fractured narratives and "gritty authenticity" to see how unusual such thinking is in mainstream TV.

Imperceptibly, over the seasons, Street has been smoothed out, the very features that set it apart have been tidied up and reduced. I here are those who would do the same to 77ie 7.30 Report. The cut of Cap'n Singleton's jib (or her clothes at least) often rates as much comment as does the content of the program. The minimal trivia content also disturbs. Fruits Council can be viewed rather more soberly.

Speaking of rare fruits, a rare and scrumptious compote was served up by the very delicious Bill Collins with the midday movie Against All Flags. This pirate yarn starred a painfully puffed and almost-past-it Errol Flynn and Maureen O'Hara as a flame-haired, swashbuckling moll. Set in a studio water tank amid luridly painted backdrops, 'twas exceeding pleasurable. It was made doubly so by Bill's geography lesson, which sought to place Madagascar (site of the tank) in its global context. It is sadly de rigeur to heap scorn on El Enthusioso, but then a ruling passion given full rein is just not cool.

Bill's particular appetite, aside from old movies, is for the inconsequential details that breathe life into the most moribund reel of celluloid. Maureen O'Hara for instance, (and Joan Fontaine, says Bill) was one of Hollywood's most accomplished swordswomen. Having just learnt that from the Beaming One added immeasurably to the scene where Spitfire Stevens (Maureen O'Hara and not an extra, that is) takes on a pack of 44 A PLEASURE doubled is a Vi pleasure runs the cosy assurance of the cur-X -Li. rent Nescafe Blend 43 commercial. This lyric inanity is not something to dwell on lest a storm of gnashing and renting be unleashed.

I mean really, what does it mean? State of the Arts unwittingly provided a clue with its feature on North Queensland's New Moon Theatre Company. Filmed in rehearsal for a make-or-break production of Agnes of God. the divine Diane Cilento and equally divine Cornelia Frances are clearly carrying a heavy load. Apparently, unless the company goes into the black with this one, its days of government subsidy are over and New Moon ill go down the gurgler. So what? Who cares?" the cry goes up.

This is belt-tightening time; austerity is the watchword. Don't cut if you can slash. Don't slash if a full-scale bloodbath is possible. For some maybe. As the State of the Arts person pointed out, with due wonderment.

New Moon is the only living theatre available to an area the size of the British Isles and a whopping percent- he reads nicely and looks reassuring. Not that he claims anything different for himself. Unlike the 60 Minutes, crew for instance, who are simply not content with finding, arranging and placing the facts of a matter before the public. The presentation of this telly tabloid fixes entirely on presenter as star Minnie Minor I'm George Gorgeous I'm Tarquin Beancurd and this is our it reverses the raison d'etre of news and current affairs and the results can be curious. Not that Cap'n Jane is creepily self-effacing: too many blustering pol ticians would still like to have her garters for guts for that to be true.

It's just that in a milieu of total plasticity, she evidently has a mind and heart and they work in close co-operation. Now that's entertainment. Richard Coleman is on leave. age of its budget goes on travel alone. Barry Cohen, Minister for the Arts, (and lately, arts funding hero) talked about how much he wanted to see the arts as part of the wider community surely the pleasure doubled, pleasure shared principle in living stereo.

Why, then, is New Moon different than any other publicly subsidised theatre company? If a profit is the mark of artistic excellence and cultural merit, then the STC, the Australian Opera and the Nimrod, to name but three, would be mere glimmers in the memory. As any metropolitan culture-vulture knows, however, it's the capacities of your begging bowl and bailing bucket malodorous seadogs with her trusty rapier. Seen in a similar role on The 7.30 Report is the redoubtable Cap'n Singleton and First Mate Goward. It is heart-warming to watch these two strike out for truth and sanity against the forces of "good Television -as we know it (back to pleasure at this point), has been constructed as entertainment.
