Snake man of La Perouse. Aged 73 years before, he replied, "No-one asked A more likely explanation is that, throughout his life, Timms channelled his creative energies into song and dance. He led Gija performances to venues throughout Australia and to enthusiastic reviews in Paris.

He was at his happiest singing song cycles, playing the maluk (didgeridoo) or living up to his name as the "Red Mob Wangka Man" (after the red naga or loincloth worn during dances). His last performance for a Kimberley-wide audience was at a meeting in October at Kupurtiya, an Aboriginal-owned pastoral station about 80 km from Fitzroy Crossing. He left the site in a minibus, his broad smile made all the wider by a cassette he was playing for the long drive home it was a tape of Gija song and music, and the unmistakable voice was none other than that of Timms himself. A big man with a gentle manner, he was a revered and respected leader who was never known to speak a harsh word or act in anger. He is survived by Liddy, his wife of more than 60 years, four brothers, four sisters and five children (and numerous grand, great-grand and great-greatgrandchildren).

Leon Morris Photo: Jason Davidson The Herald wishes to thank Timmy Timms's family for permission to use his Gija name and to publish a photograph of him. He built much of the community infrastructure with his hands and took on construction work in Wyndham, at one stage painting the underside of the town jetty from scaffolding suspended above crocodiles. In 1978 he became a founding member of the Kimberley Land Council, working to regain access to his people's traditional country at Bow River. He later became a founding member of the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre, working quietly but determinedly to strengthen ceremonial and political ties throughout the region. In 1984, the 800-hectare Bow River Station, 160 kilometres south of Kununurra, was bought by the Aboriginal Development Commission.

About 100 people returned to the land under Timms's stewardship. By this time the land had been seriously degraded, and the station has subsequently struggled to pay its way. In recent years the success of Gija artists such as Freddie Timms (Timms's nephew), Paddy Bedford and Phyllis Thomas following in the footsteps of Turkey Creek artists such as Rover Thomas and Queenie McKenzie -encouraged Timms and senior Gija elders to implement their vision for Bow River's revival. 9709 5044 (deceased), mother and of Kathleen and Campbell) and Clarke Grandmother Craig. Erin. Emma and Campbell and of (deceased) and David Great-grandmother of Banting Sister of Bill Leader 1920-2000 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people of the east Kimberley in Western Australia have lost an inspirational leader with the death of the senior Gija lawman, Kamaliny Palmentarri (Timmy Timms). He was born at Bedford Downs Station, about 1920, and spent his early years being initiated into what became a lifelong pursuit of learning and transmitting Gija law and culture. For 35 years he worked as a pastoral hand, and subsequently head stockman, to the Lilly family at Bow River Station, spending the off season fulfilling ceremonial responsibilities.

Timms was a highly accomplished horseman, whose successes included the training of the Kimberley's answer to Phar Lap, an unbeatable racehorse named Mehvood, the winner of several successive Wyndham Cups in the early 1950s. Life changed dramatically for Timms and the Gija in the mid-'70s. The combined impact of increasing mechanisation (road trains, aerial musters) and the award of equal wages to Aboriginal stockmen in 1968 led to a great, often involuntary, relocation of Aboriginal people from their homelands on pastoral stations to fringe dwelling in Kimberley towns. Exiled to Guda Guda, a camp at the Wyndham 9 Mile, Timms led by dignified example, working to hold his community together during a time of social fragmentation. William Hewlett Computer pioneer 1913 2000 A computer era has come to an end with the death of William Redington Hewlett, the electrical engineer who in 1938, with David Packard, pulled together SUS538 to set up a tiny electronics firm in a Palo Alto, California, garage that ultimately led to the creation of Silicon Valley.

After building the company that would become the nation's second -largest computer maker, Hewlett, who was 87, went on to become one of the nation's leading philanthropists. The Hewlett Foundation, which he established with his first wife, Flora, has an endowment of S3.5 billion. With Packard, Hewlett contributed more than $300 million to Stanford University. "They created the first Silicon Valley company," said Steve Jobs, founder and chairman of Apple Computer Inc. "When David Packard died in 1996, it was the beginning of the end of an era.

Now this is the end." The two men founded Hewlett-Packard while they were working on their master's degrees at Stanford University. They first began their business ventures in 1934. Initially they attempted to sell a variety of diverse inventions, including a self-flushing urinal, a bowling lane foul Flo Kennedy Lawyer, activist 1916 2000 She was once called "the biggest, loudest and indisputably the rudest mouth on the battleground where feminist activists and radical politics It was all true. Florynce Kennedy Flo to friend and foe alike who has died aged 84, called herself "radicalism's rudest Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Florynce Rae Kennedy was the second of five daughters of Wiley and Zella Kennedy, who were members of the "pooristocrats" of the black community and taught their children to stand up for themselves. She finished high school top of her class in 1934, after which she ran a hat shop, performed on a radio show and operated a lift.

After her mother died in 1942, Beatrice Burstein Judge, activist 1915-2001 One of the first women to serve as a justice of the New York State Supreme Court and who used her position to promote social activism Beatrice Bursetin has died at 85. In a judicial career that spanned 30 years, Burstein served on three different courts in Nassau County, outspokenly voicing her liberal opinions. The initiative has been supported by Argyle Diamonds, another step in closing the circle on a 20-year relationship that began when Timms became one of the signatories to the controversial agreement to permit diamond mining on a significant women's site in the Blatchford Escarpment, about 30 kilometres west of Bow River. Timms's daughter, Mona Ramsey, has recently assumed her father's role as community fessional work was done before the emergence of the digital computing era, he played a crucial role after the company had invented the HP 9100, the first desktop scientific calculator, in 1968. It was Hewlett who issued a challenge to his engineers in the early '70s to design a version that would fit in his shirt pocket.

Their answer was the HP 35, which was the world's first pocket scientific calculator. Hewlett's wealth was estimated to be $9 billion last year by Forbes magazine, making him one of the nation's 50 most wealthy. After military service, during which he served in the Army Signal Corps, Hewlett returned to HP in 1947 and became a vice-president. He was elected executive vice-president in 1957, president in 1964 and chief executive officer in 1969. Hewlett resigned as president in 1977 and retired as chief executive officer in 1978.

He then served as chairman of HP's executive committee until 1983, when he became vice-chairman of the HP board of directors. In 1987, he was named director emeritus. Hewlett's first wife died in 1977, and he married Rosemary Bradford in 1978. She survives him, as do five children from his first marriage and five stepchildren. John Markoff 1 The New York Times whether practising law could ever be an effective means of changing society or even of simple resistance to oppression," she later said.

In 1966 she founded the National Organisation for Women (NOW) and created the Media Workshop to fight media discrimination. In 1967 she took to the stage at an anti-Vietnam War convention in Montreal to protest at the refusal to allow the black radical Bobby Seale to discuss racism. The action marked the start of a speaking career characterised by bluntly effective utterances, whose impact was the greater when combined with her unconventional dress style, which often featured a cowboy hat and boots. Kennedy's mission was to tell it like it was, combined with advocacy of direct action. Beyond sexism and racism, she championed the civil liberties of high school and New York University, with piano classes at the Juilliard School of Music on a scholarship.

She earned her law degree from St John's University and passed the Bar exam in 1940. In 1937 she married Herbert Bursteiu, becoming an associate at his law firm when she finished law school. In 1958 she became a founding partner in the firm of Burstein Agata, where she specialised in family law. Burstein was the first woman to be appointed to the New York State Commission of Correction, on which she served from 1955 to tier, either personally witnessed or passed down through song and story. The Joonba, and accompanying narrative works by Gija artists, reveal that history for the first time, and are likely to alter significantly the way Australians understand the history of this region.

Timms completed his first ever paintings a few months before his death. His first efforts demonstrate vision in search of technique. His later works are masterpieces, mapping the land and law in the deceptively simple yet powerful style of the Turkey Creek painters. Asked why he had never painted Charles Helou Lebanese politician 1912 2001 As Lebanon's president and head of state from 1964 to 1970, an era of growing threats and of incipient conflict, Charles Helou was credited with attempting to bring peace and stability to his nation. Helou, who has died aged 88, was a Maronite Christian.

He was education minister when he was elected president, not by a direct popular vote, but by the 99 members of the Parliament. After his six-year term he was obliged to retire. Under the constitution, he could not succeed himself. Helou was credited with bringing about the signing of the Cairo Agreement of November 1969. At the time, Lebanese and Palestinian commando negotiators announced that they had reached "full agreement" on an accord to end strife between their forces in Lebanon.

Under the pact, Lebanon was reported to have formally endorsed the presence of Palestinian commandos on its territory in return for a pledge by the commandos to "co-operate" with the Lebanese Army. The pact was signed after more than a week of military conflict-that tore Lebanon and raised social and political divisions to the surface: On one side were 20,000 Lebanese troops; on the other 4,000 commandos. Other declarations included: "Niggerisation is the result of oppression and it doesn't just apply to the black people.

Old people, poor people and students can also get niggerised." And: "There are very few jobs that actually require a penis or a vagina. All other jobs should be open to everybody." In 1971 Kennedy formed the Feminist Party, which lent support to Shirley Chisholm as a US presidential candidate, and in 1975 she founded the National Black Feminist Organisation. She was a member of the legal team instrumental in liberalising the New York State abortion laws, and co-authored one of the first books on the topic, Abortion Rap. 1961. She also served at the UN on President Kennedy's Commission on Juvenile Delinquency in 1961.

A Democrat, she was elected in 1962, with bipartisan support, to the District Court in Nassau County. Six years later she was elected to the Family Court. In 1972 she took a seat on the State Supreme Court in Nassau County, serving for the next 19 years, with the maximum of three post-retirement extensions. They went on to build a global electronics, instrumentation and computing powerhouse that was marked by an informal corporate culture referred to as "the HP Way" that eschewed hierarchy, valued employees as people and unleashed individual creativity. Last year the company was split into two corporations: Hewlett-Packard Co, with revenue of $48.8 billion and more than 88,500 employees, and Agilent Technologies Inc ($10.8 billion, more than 47,000 employees. After graduating in 1951, she established her own practice, eventually representing the estates of Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker, and the black power leader H. Rap Brown. Her autobiography, Colour Me Flo: My Hard Life and Good Times (1976), contains this unapologetic self-description: "I'm just a loudmouthed, middle-aged, coloured lady with a fused spine and three feet of intestine missing, and a lot of people think I'm crazy. "Maybe you do, too, but I never stop to wonder why I'm not like other people. The mystery to me is why more people aren't like me."
