They found that person, sans the salt in his locks, within the News 5 department. News director Ken Robinson reports that weekend anchorreporter Roger Downey will be elevated to the weekday newscasts starting Aug. 29. Downey, 36, will co-anchor News 5 telecasts at 11:30 a.m.

(with Chris Cochran) and 9:30 p.m. (with Linda Turley) Monday through Friday. "Roger deserves the chance. He's a good solid reporter; he's gained experience anchoring. We just feel right with the situation," said Robinson, who now has to find a successor for Downey on weekends.

Said Downey, "I'm really excited; I'm really pleased." He added that when offered the promotion, he was "about ready to jump out of my skin" over being given the opportunity. Like Coy, whose final newscast after more than 10 years on the air was Aug. 5, Downey will work a split shift. "I don't think it's going to be a problem. Ken did it and survived it," he said.

"I like the job so much, I'll do it." Downey has been with KPHO-TV for six years. Between September 1973 and August 1977, he was news director of KTAR radio and was responsible for taking the station from a music to a news talk format. "It's going to take at least a couple of months to get into what I'm doing," Downey said of his new role. "I just hope I can do as good a job as I'm capable of doing." Meanwhile, Coy's exit two weeks ago deserves one final mention. On his last newscast, the closing moments were devoted to thanking co-workers and viewers for their support.

While noting that the events being covered have not changed much, Coy told viewers, "You have given me far more than I ever could have hoped for." The farewell was brief and classy, not glittery, drawn-out or overproduced like the flowery send-off staged for another local anchor who left the market last year. Newstalk radio KTAR (620 AM) has hired Mel Young of Dallas' WFAA, which recently switched format from newstalk to rock, to host its afternoon drive-time segment. Young will start in the 4 to 6 p.m. slot Sept. 1, relieving Preston Westmoreland, who has been doing double duty as early afternoon talk-show host and late-afternoon news-block host.
