Ufa fibnfi! Purnin $tralb the guide salty irdaynovemberU 8 moviesdouganderson tvpreviews 20 NOV 13-19 2000 AFI Awards SBS, 8.30 pm The ABC dropped this project early in the piece, spooked by legions of lawyers (this is, after all, the network that pulled the entirely harmless The Naked Lady Vanishes because of objections from a cranky QC). It's to SBS's credit that it picked up the project and stuck with it through the tortuous production process, a decision vindicated by the AFI nomination. The World Around Us: Tibet Seven, 6.30 pm Danny DeVito in Get Shorty. With the addition this year of five more television categories, the AFI Awards are divided fairly evenly between film and TV and provide a viable highbrow alternative to the Logies and People's Choice awards. Predictably, most of the nominees hail from the stables of Aunty and SBS, with the ABC's Grass Roots scoring 13 nominations.

Hosted by Jonathan Biggins, with appearances by Eric Bana, Guy Pearce, Pia Miranda and screenwriter Robert Towne, among others, the ceremony will doubtless comprise the usual mix of mutual backslapping and rambling speeches, although the bizarre decision to dub the awards the Lovelies should provide some light relief. While it's ironic that the recognition of good TV should involve two hours of bad TV, it's in a good cause and at least there'll be no ads. As It Happened: A Death in the Family SBS, 7.30 pm To celebrate the AFI Awards, SBS is preceding the ceremony with a repeat of one of the nominees for best documentary. First screened in July this year, Terry Carlyon's riveting documentary begins with the unlikely suicide of Jennifer Tanner in rural Victoria in 1984 and ends with the 'resignation of her brother-in-law. Detective Sergeant Denis Tanner, from the Victorian Police Force last year, more than six months after a second inquest found him responsible for her death.

Written and directed by Andrew Rule, whose 1996 piece in The Sunday Age revived interest'in the case, it combines re-enactments of his investigation, interviews with those involved in the case and the tapes of Detective Tanner's police interview. This is an incredible story, 2l2 years in the making, of corruption, incompetence and dogged investigative journalism The mood is fittingly sombre all afternoon light on stark hills and noirish shots of inner-city Melbourne and the editing is superb. The inclusion of the police interview tapes is a masterstroke. As the case against him is laid out, Detective Tanner is chillingly composed, an occasional biting of the lip the only indication of emotion. Amazingly, despite the coroner's findings, Tanner remains a free man.

The director of public prosecutions in Victoria ruled a conviction unlikely, and no charges were laid. Rule, however, draws a thoughtful and satisfying conclusion from this story of injustice and damaged lives. usually do. John Travolta plays a Miami loan shark named Chili Palmer who hits the coast to collect a debt of si50-thou from grunge film producer Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), a guy who could do with a visit from the Sliders team. Chili, like many gangster types, fancies a shot at stardom and sees his leverage over Zimm as his entree to Hollywood.

But another debt collector has Zimm's apricots in the vice. Bo Catlett is also seeking payment for an outstanding loan and there's peripheral annoyance in an insurance pay-off due to another mobster, Ray "Bones" Barboni. Ingredients aplenty for a cracking comedy which emerges often enough to make the film worth considering. Adorable Rene Russo is anything but as a slasher-flick scream queen and Danny DeVito's ex, but Hackman and Travolta keep it chugging along. Bette Midler, Harvey Keitel and some top-flight supporting actors give it plenty of juice.

Rubber (1997) Seven, 7.30 pm Professor Philip Brainard invents a gooey, green anti-Em gravity substance with-curious properties. Hilarity ensues. There was absolutely no need to revisit the '60s Disney hit The Absent-Minded Professor and little to suggest Robin Williams could outfumble Fred MacMurray. But restraint was never one of writer John Hughes's dominant qualities and he manages to expunge most of what was clever in the original. The baseball sequence survives and Nancy Olson, who played opposite MacMurray in 1961, returns in a bit part.

Wacky is the best word to describe it. But crap is reasonably apt, too. North West Mounted Police (1940) Seven, 2 pm Ready when you are, Mr DeMille Vjor -2 Pm is nne fr a Saturday tmmmt arvo western and this is a trimmer. Courageous Mounties, gorgeous nurses and half-breed injuns do their stuff as 1880-frontier types learn the values of Imperial decency and British-style justice. The Mountie gets his man, but not the gal.

Texas Ranger Dusty Rivers (Gary Cooper) rides into Canada looking for a Jacques Corbeau who is wanted for murder in the Lone Star State Corbeau is busy fomenting rebellion among Indians and half-breeds at the behest of Louis RieL He's a dangerous cove, but Rivers finds an ally in Sergeant Jim Brett (Preston Foster), who is hopelessly in love with Anglican nurse April Logan. April's brother is another Mountie, who is in love with Corbeau's half-breed vixen sister, Louvette (Paulette Goddard). It's nonstop action with all the balderdash of a DeMille epic and Cooper at his best (despite some fruity dialogue that was awful 60 years ago). Goddard worked hard to win the part of Louvette, playing on DeMille's foot fetish among other things, and proceeded to overact to billyo as she invariably did in the director's corn-fed films. This one grossed well and is well worth seeing and not simply for its rarity.

Beautiful to look at but strangely remote, this New Zealand documentary combines time-lapse footage of clouds scuttering across vast landscapes with slow motion close-ups of people, resembling at times the '80s stoner flick Koyaanisqatsi. There are no interviews, just the stunning footage and a narration that occasionally goes right over the top of the wind, they have learned its ways," it solemnly intones). Starting from the sparsely populated western fringes of the Tibetan Plateau, we move slowly east to the industrial centre of Lhasa. This physical journey is mirrored by a spiritual one, as a discussion of Buddhism in Tibet gives way to a look at the forces of modernisation and the role of China in Tibetan affairs. Although the brutality of China's occupation is underplayed and the reiteration of the Tibetans' endurance seems a bit glib, the documentary's structure provides its own subtext.

As we move from the majestic plains to the dusty anonymity of modernlay Lhasa, there is a lurking sense of menace, a suggestion that the forces of modernisation could yet devour these beleaguered people. The microchip industry is, of course, vital in keeping the assembly-line fantasies of 007 going in perpetuity and any amount of silicon can be found stored in the buxom chests of Bond's minor conquests. Familiar daydreams on autopilot as Roger Moore expends about as much energy as the viewer in his glib battle with the forces of oppression.
