i-osiea rnrc. Disqualification of Ferrier in U.S. Australian Associated Press. CHICAGO, August 27. A stir was caused In golf circles when Jim Ferrier, the Australian amateur and open champion, announced that he had been barred from the United States amateur championship presum ably because of his writings on the game.

Ferrier said he had received final notice of his disqualification late Monday afternoon. He was scheduled to compete In the dis trlct qualifying round at Chicago) to-day. The United Btates Gold Association had told him that some of his writings in Australia over stepped the bounds of an amateui golfer. Apparently they took exception to his book. "Jim Ferrlcr's Goll Strokes," but they must have known aoout nis writing ior a long time Neither in England nor Australia where the rule regardinK lournalisn was the same as in the United States, had his entry ever been questioned.

He well knew the rule which, in effect. said an amateur could not write articles intended as instruction. In his writings all he had ever tried to do was to explain how he played golf not how it should be played. He could not see why the association had to wait until the very last minute to take action against him, after he had come n.uuu nines at nis own expense to piay In amateur and open championships. He thought his chances were very good pernaps too good.

The U.S.G.A. In a statement said was forced to dec'lne Ferrier entry because of his book, which consisted principally of photographs of Ferrier making shots, accompanied bv printed material of an instructive nature. Fer rier had stated he had contracted to receive royalties from the book; there fore, ne was ineligible. Complications May Ensue The action of the U.S. Golf Associa tion may cause repercussions In Aus tralla.

As the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews the ruling golf authority In Great Britain will undoubtedly support the U.S. body what will be the position on Ferrier'sl return to Australia Officials here. no doubt will find the position diffl cult unless developments occurred after Perrier's departure from Australia that tended to weaken his claims to be an amateur. For years Ferrler's amateur status had been the subject of much com ment among golfers, but no official pronouncement had been forthcom ing.

and his entry for championships had been accepted. As far as the A.G.U. was concerned Ferripr wns hp. cepted for the Australian championships last year, and unless he had since infringed the amateur regulations would still he nrrpnturi Should Ferrier be inellgble for future Australan amateur tournament play several other leading amateurs will be pmcea in an inviaious position, as tnev would come under the definition which refers to those ineligible for participation in amateur competitions. Section 3 debars those who exploit their skill at the game or allow their skill to be exploited for profit.

The absence of the Australian plant will be as keenlv 'felt here as in the States. Ferrier Is Immensely popular here, and no doubt his happy manner and keenness won him praise In America. He Is particularly popular with the American sporting press. The president of the Victorian Golf Association, Mr. T.

E. Doughton, who Is also a delegate to the A.G.U. stated yesterday that the V.G.A., as a constituent, member of the A.G.U., was anxious to uphold amateur golf in its entirety, and would endeavor to do so. The secretary of the Australian Golf Union. Mr.

S. Morpeth, stated that the decision of the U.S.G.A. would have to be accepted, but no further comment was made. A "Recognised Journalist" SYDNEY, Tuesday. Mr.

J. B. Ferrier said to-day It seemed as if a point had been taken to bar his son from competing In the title because It was feared he might win. As far as journalistic work was concerned the American Golf Assnrintlnn hnH laid it down that It followed the Royal and Ancient ruling. This stated that If a golfer was a recognised his writings did not affect his status.

His son was a recognised journalist and had been a member of tne Australian journalists' Association lor nve vears. He had nhtalnerl a ruling from the Australian Golf Coun cil concerning press work to make sure! ne wouia not enaanger nis status. Mr. F. H.

Greaves, former president of the N.S.W. Golf Council, said he could think of no reason why Ferrier should not be classed an an amateur in America. Ferrier was the amateur champion of Australia and went to America as such. Associate Compefitions CROYDON. Klndersart en HnlMs Rnmat Chartty Day.

Racing Men Say Tasman With ten races and 160 horses engaged, the Werribee programme at Mentone to-day presents one of the toughest propositions racegoers have had to face for a long time.

Now that Werribee has entered the definite metropolitan area it had previously been classed for legislative purposes and racing statistics as a metropolitan course, but with certain reservations some ruling on the posi tion would be welcomed Werribee, by reason of Us distance from the metropolis, had a concession regarding the amount of stakes ne cessary to be allocated. All other metropolitan clubs had to provide a minimum of 100 for distribution In each race, irrespective of divisions. Even though the meeting is at Men tone to-day that rule is to be waived and in each of the three divisions of the Deuteam Trial the stake Is 70 oi wmcn tne winner receives 49. To keep up to standard, a revision appears essential. For the Werribee cluo It cannot be said, however, that when the programme was framed it was oasea on tne nxture Being held at Its own course.

No doubt the com mittee will take action following the experience gainea lo-aay. Bunnegal was travelling promisingly when he dislodged his rider late in the race won by King Alfred at the Valley a week ago. Sprinr Divisions The first division of the Bulban Handicap over six furlongs may be disputed between the top weight, Fiesal, On Watch and Illlades. Fiesal has not shown up in more recent races, but won nicelv at this course in June, when Billy Moon was second and Trowsdale third.

On Watch scored over this distance at the Valley, July 15, in a two-year-old division. Two failures since, at Flemington and Moonee Valley, can be discounted. Sixth in the former event. the Lilllmur Two-year-old, was a fair fierformance, and the latter race was he Kiata Handicap won by Aurie's Star from Dhoti.
