Poltergeist II is big on The Family. In fact, it's only the love of the nuclear family, with Dad as protector, which saves the Freelings. It's a bit like The Brady Bunch with added ectoplasm. The annoying thing is that the movie doesn't make sense. Poltergeist II doesn't stick to its own supernatural rules and leaves lots of loose ends waving in the breeze.

Maybe the Freelings should take this as a warning that they'll have to live through a Poltergeist III. reviewer has never been particularly brave when it comes to scarey movies. (I'm still having nightmares about the forest fire in Bambi). So my heart was already pounding in the tranquil opening credits of Poltergeist II. Little did the Free'ing family know, when they fled their imploded house in Poltergeist, that they'd have to endure a sequel.

The Freelings have now moved into Mum's peaceful house and are busy working out what to tell the insurance is Poltergeist II? Not very. There's the odd suspense-filled moment, but tension quickly dissolves to giggles when we actually see the ghouls. Often in movie-making, more is less when it comes to slime-encrusted monsters. And in this movie, the effects are so gross and so random, that it ends up looking downright silly. The final sequence, in which the Freeling family go on a family outing to The Other Side, is meant to be the real gut-wrencher.

From my company about house number one. But the poltergeists won't leave them alone they're intent on spiriting young Carol Anne to The Other Side, and are giving the family a rough, pile-on-the-special-ef-fects ride. The question which I gather is crucial to connoisseurs of the spook genre is how scarey ,3 The Freeling family from Poltergeist 11. Georgia could so easily have been sickeningly sweet or drippy, but Lori Singer avoids those traps, making her lovably gauche and raw. Carradine is obviously having the time of his life in this movie. With the aid of a blowdryer and eyeliner, Coop sinks further and further into a ridiculous parody of a street spiv. I've always found Kristofferson a strangely blank-faced, unreadable actor.

Sure, Hawk is meant to be the traditional taciturn strong man, but Kristofferson is giving nothing away. I suspect a lot of people will love this movie and many others will find its slickness and self-consciousness annoying. I reckon Trouble In Mind is worth seeing. POLTERGEIST II s-ooMoniiwio. Trouble In Mind is set a little way into the future, in grubby, drizzling Rain City. The lives of four people, all living on the edge, begin to intertwine. Hawk (Kris Kristoflerson) is an ex-cop, just out of prison after eight years for murdering a crime boss.

He goes straight to Wanda's Cafe, a seedy diner, and straight to Wanda herself (Genevieve Bujold) for comfort. Meanwhile, a drifting, penniless young couple park their trailer outside the cafe. Coop (Keith Carradine), Georgia (Lori Singer) and their baby, Spike, have dizzy hopes of beginning a new life in the city. Coop is cocky and greedy, quickly drawn into the petty criminal underbelly of the city. He neglects Georgia, a naive, tousled madonna in need of a bath.

But Hawk turns his hungry attentions to Georgia and woos her relentlessly. When Coop gets out of his depth with organised crime, Hawk has to fish him out. Keeping a watchful eye on these follies and passions is stoic Wanda. She sees a flicker of hope in the love between Hawk and Georgia "You and she are missing so much. Between the two of you, there's almost a whole It was obvious in writerdirector Alan Rudolph's last Him, Choose Me, that he's a stylish director, a filmmaker besotted with film.

In Trouble In Mind he plays with movie style teetering on the edge of surrealism, spoofing classic films, and paying homage to fiim noir. But at times, Rudolph strains after the bizarre. Unexplained futuristic elements odd languages, constant military presence feel tacked on and unnecessary. And the smart lines, the wisecracks, are a bit hit and miss. For all Rudolph's style, it's the characters and their emotional entanglements that made the movie work for me.
