Its yearning for a fighter which would make the RAAF's adrenalin pump in much the same way as it did when the Fill was delivered has led to an intensive search for ways of "selling" the project to the Government.

Septem. I BUSINESSES FOR SALE DILLON. Marv. Saotemher 1 able to finance such a project for. Australia, and there are doubts in RAAF circles that similar easy credit would be available in Europe, it may well be that economic argument would become the primary consideration.

As an aircraft, the F15 is stunning in its versatility, performance and in its ability to out-manoeuvre and out-fight most of the fighter aircraft which have been put up against it in trials. It has delighted both Australian anil overseas Defence experts in its low-altitude manoeuvres and in its impressive displays of power and speed. But as the experts evaluating the aircraft have found, each Eagle could cost about $20 million for all the equipment it carries, spares, pilot training and project support. Allowing for the replacement of the present three Mirage squadrons, the Government could expect to pay up to $1,200 million for 60 aircraft. The project's costs could be higher if training aircraft were included, but by the same token could be reduced if fewer aircraft were bought.

This could explain reports in the Defence Department that the Government is considering the possibility of buying one squadron of F15s initially, to be followed by the remaining one to two squadrons, depending on the economic situation and its updated strategic assessments. The one contingency for which the RAAF must be prepared, however, fs influence which the manufacturers of the Mi race 2000 may have had on the Prime Minister during his reported talks with them in Paris in June. Mr Fraser is known to be taking a keen interest in the Mirage replacement and, a swing preference from US-built to French-built aircraft would have to be weighed carefully by Defence advisers. oer i77, of North Bondi, narvey neatn. runerai brafton Lawn Cemeter, tomorrow, Tuesday at 1 1 .30 a.m.

7a Bartl.tt St. Summer Hill. 798 3S13. Want mora CANBERRA. The national director of the Cattlemen's Union, Mr Barry Castle, said yesterday that the Federal Government would be defeated if it called an election before Christmas.

Opinion polls indicated that support for Labor and the coalition parties was about equal. -y The Government apparently believed it would be able to maintain its strength on the rural vote. "That is an illusion," Mr Castle said. "Government credibility in the country has nosedived in the past 12 months because of continued neglect of country people, "Unemployment and countryside, depression, not uranium or union bashing, are the two great social problems of Australia at the moment. "If the Government went to the people on uranium before Christmas, LOCKSMITH'S Premises, Kings According to Defence sources, by winning ministerial support for a US-built aircraft over the more practical choice of a new model French Mirage, the RAAF could argue that since the F15 is the best available in the US it should be the successor to the Mirage.
