"It's a once in a lifetime experience." With a $75,000 price tag attached to the trip, it took a fan-amount of chocolate-selling and fundraising concerts to get the band on the plane, as well as thousands of dollars in sponsorship from local businesses. Touring with the band will be trombonist Bob Johnson, from the Queensland Conservatorium, who Mr Staines described as "one of the country's leading teachers of big band He would teach the students during the trip, Mr Staines said, as well as performing himself. Apart from the festivals, the band will perform at Eurodisney in Paris, and Heidelberg and Munich, on a three-week tour. Trumpeters in the Chatswood BYJUDYADAMSON The Chatswood High School Big Band is about to become the first school group from Australia to play at the internationally recognised Montreux and North Sea jazz festivals in Europe, and the young members of the band are in no doubt as to why. "We swing," said trumpeter Tim Robinson. The band's director, music teacher Gavin Staines, was also full of praise for the group. He said recent competitions had shown the students could hold their own with musicians 10 to 15 years their senior, and they were a "very polished" ensemble. "If there's a vacancy in the big band then people have got to compete for a place," he said.

"To be part of this they've got to be dedicated, and strive, turning up to all the rehearsals and functions that we do. It's a real commitment to be part of a group like this." The school sent audition tapes to the organisers of Montreux, in Switzerland, and North Sea, in Holland, last year. Both approved of the band's playing standard, and promptly issued an invitation to appear at their 1996 festivals. like many school music groups, the 17-piece Chatswood High School Big Band occasionally goes on tour. Two visits have been made to the US west coast, but both were arranged concerts rather than invitation appearances.

None of the players in the present band took part in those tours, and they are itching to visit places that have asked them to come, and to be part of a line-up that includes David Sanborn, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. "It's mad it's cool," enthused keyboard player Ivanna Bazzano, 16, while Ben Nancarrow, 15, who plays trumpet, said it was "a privilege" to be chosen. Tim Robinson, 17, a confessed jazz freak, said his HSC was going to seem pretty small by comparison.
