STREET. MM STATE EDITION H4 The Arizona Republic Wednesday, December 14, 1988 ITWirri rami Golf Notes Commentary Marcos de Niza's perfect start better than all of last season Prep Notes ByDickObert The Arizona Republic The basketball season was only two weeks old, but Tempe Marcos de Niza had reason to celebrate Thursday after edging Central by two points. It was the fourth straight- victory for the Padres without a loss. They finished 3-20 last season. The previous year the Padres won only four games.

"After we beat Central, all the kids had smiles on their faces and looked at me and said, 'Hey, coach, we beat last year's said Marcos coach Bob "I kind of laughed. "But we're serious about doing more than just beating last year's record. These kids have a lot to played. "They liked the tournament and said they had some high school teams that would like to come down and play," Lopez said. "I don't know how good they are, but a couple of those teams are pretty close to Detroit, so they can't be too bad." Overlap Lopez said he wasn't too thrilled with Skyline Region officials' decision to schedule only three games before the holiday tournaments because of the football overlap.

Most AAA teams already have played four or five games entering this week. The Skyline teams had played only two each St. Mary's only one. Lopez said Skyline rescheduled the games after December. "Believe me, we're all climbing the walls," Lopez said.

"I hope this is the last year this happens." Phoenician retains old charm 3 holes take on new appearance By Mike Cox Arizona Republic Correspondent Being a curious sort, I took a trip to the Phoenician Resort Golf Course to see what was left of Jack Snyder's" clever golf course that has draped the shoulders of Camelback Mountain. I wanted to see if the new owners had managed to maintain anything of the old layout after they planted a huge hotel in the middle of the course. The Phoencian, which was the old Valley Country Club on the historic Jokake Estate, was shut down two Mark Brand and his staff provided statistics at no charge last Friday night. "I just assumed (Arizona Interscholastic Association) did stats for championship games," Brand said. It doesn't.

"It's simply the cost factor," said Dick Stuart of the AIA office. "We put our money into the non-revenue sports in the high schools." Contracts for use of the stadium are between AIA and the ASU Public Events office, Brand said. Not between AIA and the athletic department. ASU didn't charge the AIA for use of the stadium, said Tom Saddler of the university relations office. "We only charged for services (use of personnel)," Saddler said, "not the The Associated Press Don Maloney, left, of the New York Rangers goes after the puck while Kings goalie Glenn Healy and teammate Tim Watters try to block him.

Canadiens top Bruins, extend unbeaten string Options open Mesa Mountain View coach Jesse Parker, who lost his second straight AAA-1 football championship game last Friday, says he is keeping an open mind about other coaching opportunities. He said he has had discussions with Mesa Community College offi- 1 il. 1 6 1 1 NHL years ago by the American Continental people so they could build the $400 million Phoenician Resort. I was sure they would demolish the course. I was wrong.

Homer Flint did the redesign, and while I never will understand the love affair designers have for mounding, I have to say the course looked good. Not only had there been some improvements, but Flint figured out how to put a practice range on the property. Much of the layout is the same as before the hotel construction, but with a good deal of mounding and reshaping of the greens. The major exceptions are Nos. 9, prove." Starters returning from the season of discontent are swingman Marc Moser, center Brent Karnig and guard Scott Bell.

All three are scoring in double figures. The lOth-ranked Padres still are young and have one of the smallest teams in the AAA-1 Central Region. But they also are one of the better shooting teams. Yniguez, in his 17th year, credits hard work during the summer for the turnaround. But he realizes talent also helps.

"It comes in cycles no matter where you're at, unless you can recruit," he said. "I've had successful years. I saw it coming the last two years. Our junior varsity had struggled. "Last year I could have brought up some kids and maybe won a few more games.

But I wanted these kids to play together, because I had hopes for this year to have a respectable team. I guess my hunch paid off OK." Despite the last two losing seasons, Yniguez said the administration was supportive. "They were able to understand what was going on," Yniguez said. "The administrators never said, stadium." National notice Greenway football star Mike Salmon was the subject of nationally syndicated commentator Paul Harvey's radio show Monday. Harvey, who has a winter vacation house being built in Phoenix and who is based in Chicago, mentioned how Salmon, who suffers from bronchial problems, was able to overcome his problems to become All-Arizona, pile up amazing statistics and become one of the top college prospects in the state.

Salmon had nine interceptions, rushed for more than 500 yards, had 30 catches and is an outstanding kicker and punter. He said he will visit the University of Arizona this weekend, and plans a visit to Southern Cal. Jim Salmon, Mike's father, didn't hear the broadcast Monday, but was ecstatic when he heard about it. "We're getting a tape of it," Jim Salmon said. "I got hold of Harvey's manager, and he got me in touch with (a radio station in) Hawaii.

Hawaii taped it and they're going to send us a copy overnight." Reprinted from Tuesday's late editions Republic Sports Wires MONTREAL Gy Carbonneau set up goals by Bob Gainey and Larry Robinson's as the Montreal Canadiens extended their unbeaten string to nine games with a 3-1 victory Monday night over the Boston Bruins. The surging Canadiens, who moved 12 points ahead of Boston atop the Adams Division, have won six and tied three in the streak. They have been defeated only twice in their last 22 games. Shayne Corson was the other Montreal scorer, while the Keith Crowder spoiled Patrick Roy's bid for his second straight shutout by scoring in the second period. Kings 5, Rangers 2 NEW YORK Luc Robitaille and Mike Krushclnyski scored within a 35-second span of the second period to lead the Kings.

No-win situation Delvin Schutes, recently under fire from a parents group, said he resigned as head football coach at Chandler not only because of three straight losing seasons. He cited the lack of administrative support, athletic cutbacks and a disgruntled parent who made it frustrating to enjoy coaching. Last summer, Chandler eliminated the seventh- and eighth-grade athletic programs and the athletic director position at the high school for i The goal by Robitaille at 14:15 broke a 1-1 tie, and Krushclnyski connected at 14:50.

Goaltendcr Glen Healy padded his league-leading victory total, getting his 15th win. Flames 4, Maple Leafs 4 TORONTO Joel Otto's eighth goal with 2:45 remaining in the third period lifted Calgary into a tie, which ended the Maple Leafs'Six-game skid. Colin Patterson snapped a wrist shot off a faceoff and Otto tipped the puck during its flight. Al Sccord scored two goals and Derek Laxdal and Dave Reid had one each for Toronto. Jeff Reese, in his first NHL appearance this season, stopped 36 shots.

14 and 15: The ninth is now a pretty par-4, 358 yards from the back tees. It had been a mundane, short par 4. The 14th now is a special par 5 588 yards with a green carved out of the' mountain. It had been a decent par 4, but the length and 180-dcgree dogleg spruces it up. After a Magic Mountain-like ride to the 15th tee, you can climb to one of four tee boxes perched like watchtowcrs on the side of the hill.

From there, the shot to the green is 140 yards out and 80 feet down. It had been a straight, ho-hum par 3. Frankly, the course probably will be too tough. But it's reasonable from the front or middle tees for anybody over a 10-handicap. The green fees are a little steep, $45 for hotel guests and $60 for the public.

Harris a top candidate at Illinois, report says Also, a father, whose son was a quarterback, protested Schutes' wishbone offense because the boy wasn't allowed to pass enough. "Sometimes, fathers are very interested in one person out there, for the most part," Schutes said. "As a coach, you have to consider the whole group taking care of everyone. Not just one -individual." Schutes led the Wolves to the state semifinals in 1984 and to the playoffs in four of his eight years as coach. He said he would like to continue coaching.

ASU not to blame In a note here last week, it was stated Arizona State had not provided play-by-play and full-game statistics since 1982 for state football championship games staged at Sun Devil Stadium. ASU compliance coordinator Bill Bryant explains why: "It's my understanding that providing services for pre-college expenses falls into the gray area as to whether it's allowable or not," Bryant said.

"It's real vague. It's just safer not to."
