They said the three maintained a trailer at the Lake Havasu Trailer Park near the airport and often had flown to the area on holidays and weekends since 1964. Divers recovered the bodies late Wednesday night, several hours after the crash. Two dogs in the plane also died, officials said.

Fred Bunting, a Canadian pilot visiting Lake Havasu, said he saw the plane fly over the airport just after dark and then come around again on a landing approach. Bunting said one of the plane's wings sliced into the water. The plane then cartwheeled and sank into the lake, which is part of the Colorado River, he said. The plane went under too rapidly for any of its occupants to have time to get out, Bunting said. An oil slick was visible on the surface of the lake for a while after the crash.

Deputies said the plane went down in 30 feet of water about a half-mile short of the airport runway. The flight originated in Torrance, Calif. Deputies said the pilot didn't send a distress signal. 24.99 to 7199 COUNTRY SUBURBAN COORDINATES. B.
