GROUND-BREAKING PLANNED The Arizona Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will have a groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. Dec. 16 at the Adobe Mountain School. The center, for injured or illegally obtained wildlife, will have as guest speakers Gov. Bruce Babbitt; Bud Bristow, game-department director; Bill Beers, Arizona Game and Fish Commission chairman; Ellis McDou-gall, state corrections director; and Mary Jane Shoun, president of the Arizona Wildlife Federation.

APPLICATION DATE ANNOUNCED Applications for hunting permits for javelina and spring turkey may be filed Monday with the game department. A mule-deer buck, equipped with a radio collar to track its movements for a scientific study, is believed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department to have been poached. The buck, 4 years old, was one of four deer equipped with radio collars in a wildlife study for the proposed Central Arizona Project canal route between Phoenix and Tucson. The deer is believed to have been killed between Nov. 20 and Nov.

27, the day its collar, cut in two, was found discarded near Marana High School. NEW FORM The game department will issue a new boat-registration form next year. The new form will make provisions for listing the boat owner's legal place of residence and help determine the Complete Brake Overhaul By Penny Butler Republic Staff Touring pro Glen Holroyd drew top seeding in the Fiesta Bowl Open tennis tournament, which begins Friday at Tempe Racquet and Swim Club. Claire Schmoyer, head pro at Mesa Country Club, is the No. 1 women's seed.

Schmoyer, who graduated from Arizona State in 1975, is playing her first local singles tournament since she won the Fiesta Bowl Open title in 1979. Holroyd, a graduate of Cortez High School and ASU (in 1976), won the '78 Fiesta Bowl Open title. Last summer for the first time, Holroyd qualified in singles at Wimbledon, where he played 16th-seeded Vitas Gerulaitis in the first round. He got straight into the Wimbledon doubles draw with Walter Redondo. A unique feature of this year's Fiesta Bowl Open is that a wheelchair division has been added.

Michel Sykes, the Tempe club's tennis coordinator, made the arrangements with John Johnson to offer a wheelchair event. Johnson, chaplain at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, is an athlete who was confined to a wheelchair three years ago. Although Sykes only got five wheelchair entries, she said she would run a round-robin for those entered. Sixteen of the players in the 32-draw men's event were invited to play; four men were seeded.

The other 16 will be decided by qualifying tonight. In addition to Holroyd, the seeds are, in order, Tim Anderson, winner of the Phoenix Open last month; touring pro Peter Markes; and John Byron, runner-up in the Phoenix Open and winner of the 1981 Ahwatukee Open. A late report from Sykes indicated that Anderson has withdrawn because of valley fever. Included in the first 16 players are Craig Matt Smith, Jim Grabb, Jim Quenzler, Disc or DiscDrum We Replace Front Rear Brake Linings Resurface Rotors Drums Pack Front Wheel Bearings Inspect. Bleed.

Seeds following Schmoyer in the women's open are Tracy Becker, Allyson Ingram, Jeannine Balbiers, Sue Boyle, Jackie Ranger, Jennifer Potter and Kristi McCormick. WALTS RECOVERING FROM CANCER SURGERY Butch Walts, 26, a touring tennis pro and former member of the World Team Tennis Phoenix Racquets, started five weeks of chemotherapy treatment last Monday after two surgeries for testicular cancer. Reached in California where he's staying with his in-laws, Walts said he had his first operation at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital in October, and a malignant tumor was removed. Last month at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, Walts said, he had eight more malignant nodes removed from the stomach area.

Walts said he is planning to return to Scottsdale sometime after Christmas. NATIONAL RANKINGS ANNOUNCED Max-ine King of Phoenix and Cecily Grange of Paradise Valley have been tentatively ranked No. 10 in the nation in women's 60 doubles for 1981 by the United States Tennis Association. They are the only two women from Arizona to receive a national ranking in the senior division. King and Kathy Rothfels of Salt Lake City, Utah, are ranked No.

Carmen Markiam, who was helping her neighbor, Sandra Mackie, scout for elk, dropped the 170-pound bear on a single shot through the neck from 300 Savage. The two women were hunting Thanksgiving Day along Soldier's Trail near Leonard Canyon on the Mogollon Rim. Following elk tracks, they noticed fresh bear droppings.

The next day, Markiam's last day of hunting before returning home, they trailed the animal to its den. The bear burst out when Markiam was 10 steps away and ran 75 yards before she shot it. The women field-dressed the bear and dragged it to their vehicle. Markiam plans to have the skin made into a JAG. BARREL LENGTH 8" REG.
