' _______ . *_ NOHTHWOOD, IOWA, 30439 Thursday, Nov. 9, ,1967 Living In Your Later Years . , One question keeps popping , up again and again in my pro- ,'fession. "What," says a friend, v , or. a; .client, or the fellow next Jo me on the bus, ?what Is the ', .single „most important thing td know; about- the later; years of -life? Managing money? Staying , healthy? Developing hobbies?"? : , After - the- umpteenth -time; ll r decided I'd better have a reply ready for future use. So I checked all of the factors with ' this in mind. I read the psy- . chologists, made, inquiries, bal- t anced the pros and cons, and came up with what' I-think is the very best answer«to the ques- •' tion. ' ,' .",- - •'; Here it is. The most impor- , .tant thing to know' about the 'later years of life^is that they' represent a-beginning, not an s- J ertd ' That statement' is important, 1 - first of all, because it is true. H H reflects reality. : - '*!*,, ' Of course an old phase of, ; Ufe is "over for those of us en•/ tering retirement age.'But a new phase opens — with challenges, . opportunities, and rewards never known during the hurly-burly of more youthful years.. It's a time for doing-things you've dreamed of, for learning things you never knew before.^; ;; ; ; : You' don't wish .you'd 'remained a child Instead of becoming, an adult. And you shouldn't wish to remain middle- aged instead of entering the har- vesryears. They have too much to offer. w -^ -I" ."If;; • ,* ^ •. *" v •: The. second important point l about my answer is that so other goods, depend on it . Mental health? That's largely a question of attitude. >If~you Understand the pleasures of the added years, you'll be more In-, dined to accept them without pining about your lost'youth. Physical, health? A wise outlook means more exercise, and therefore fewer-ailments. You're on;;your feet > and? ready to go rather than vegetating. - ' M9,9« Vt 7"You '» can't make much if you feel discarded and useless. Seize your new opportunities with gratitude, and you may soon have a nice^dded income.; .'',.>: v \^ /_„ » .- ../ ; > Hobbles';" You can't relish them unless you take 'your new phase of life-with the gusto it deseryes. ,»- • Consider the later years a dead end, and you may be in trouble: Consider,'them a great beginning, and you've got a head start into fresh successes.
