Weber, a lesser cog in a Detroit beer distributorship, has earned a reputation for treating employees like chattel and for disrespecting listeners.

The stations are owned by The Broadcast Group, but employees past and present maintain the initials TBG stand for The Beer Guys. Another nickname applied to TBG is The Bad Guys, with Weber being considered the black hat ringleader. Weber's most visible act of idiocy was to take legal action earlier this year against a listener who protested the demotion of former talk-show host Tom Leykis to "on-call" status. The listener had been exercising First Amendment rights by sending out fliers calling for a sponsor boycott and was threatening to organize a picket line. Weber got a court injunction barring the listener, who couldn't afford legal representation, from any further protests, but Weber reaped reams of bad publicity in the process.

Last week, Weber lifted his cudgel again. This time, it is aimed at producer and part-time host Mark Williams, who approached Weber with a request to be released from his two-year, contract, which has six months to run. Williams, who is heard only on Friday night's "Dial-a-Datc" show and on two weekend shows, had recoived a big-money, high-profile offer from San Diego's XTRA radio, which will soon switch to a newstalk format. It wanted Williams to be its morning host and was offering nearly double what he is making now. Ratings-based incentives reportedly could have boosted his annual salary to more than $150,000.

What did Weber do when Williams asked for his release? Did he pat Williams on the back, offer congratulations and say, "Go for Nope. In the words of one source, "Fred had a fit." No way would he let Williams take the San Diego shuttle. Well, there was one way. Weber is said to have demanded that Williams pay KFYI $25,000 over a year, plus 10 percent interest, if he wanted to leave. "I thought they abolished slavery" was the reaction of another insider at the station.

Williams isn't talking. "It is Broadcast Group policy that questions regarding the status of employees be referred to management. That is a written policy I have to follow," he said, declining further comment. Isn't that swell? Here's a station that advocates free speech, and it's trying to muzzle someone, a person it nonetheless expects to have an opinion on the air. Weber didn't return a phone message left Tuesday.

Leykis, who now is host of an afternoon talk-show at KFI radio in Los Angeles, did have a reaction. "Eventually, everybody there is going to find out what I found out: that Fred Weber is one of the most vindictive people in radio in America," Leykis said. He added that he wasn't surprised by Weber's treatment of Williams. "It only surprises me in that he's learned more about how to make people's lives miserable. I don't see how anybody can put a gun to someone's head and make them perform.

They can, but are they going to be good?" Holding a front-line person to a contract might be understandable, but at KFYI, Williams hasn't been a key player. In fact, he has been passed over three times in recent months for weekday talk-show openings. "I was asked repeatedly by Fred Weber to fire him because Fred didn't like the tone of his shows," said former programmer Leykis. "Fred felt Mark was irresponsible, too combative, too argumentative." Leykis refused, and Williams hung on. He didn't become a valued employee, however, until a career-making offer came along.

Not only was XTRA offering big bucks and a morning drive spot, but it's a station that gets into Los Angeles during the day and throughout the West and Mexico at night. But there's nothing Weber seems to loathe more than disloyalty real or perceived and even thinking about a better offer is considered disloyal. "He doesn't treat (people) like talent with fragile egos; he treats them like Teamsters," Leykis asserted. "Looks like the only way the station (KFYI) will ever turn a profit is to hire unsuspecting pigeons, bring them in, make their lives a living hell and then charge them to leave."
