No. 17 Louisiana Stale overcame an off-night by quarterback Tommy Hodson with a strong defensive effort in stopping No. 1 1 Texas 27-0, Saturday night.

Hodson, a 61 percent passer in two years as a starter, completed 7 of 27 for 112 yards. "Our passing game was off, because our timing was off. At times we were in sync, and at times we weren't in synch," said LSU coach Mike Archer. "We'll look at film and correct some of those things." Linebacker Ron Sancho scored a first-quarter touchdown on a 20-yard interception return, and keyed a fourth-quarter shutdown of Texas when it had four shots from the 5-yard line. "We've heard all year that we couldn't run the ball, that's what we were trying to prove," Archer said.

"I think everybody already knew wc had a pretty good defensive ballclub." LSU's offensive touchdowns came on a 3-yard pass from second-string quarterback Mickey Guidry to Eddie Fuller in the second quarter and Victor Jones' 1-yard run. Kruse drove the Broncos 85 yards on the first series of the second half as Davis had four straight carries for 45 yards. Kruse capped the drive with the pass to Cade that gave Western a 14-11 lead. Wisconsin quarterback Otis Flowers fumbled trying to pilch on the first with 3:22 left in the first quarter for the first of his two touchdowns. Tailback Terry Allen, who splits time with Henderson, made the score 14-0 on a 15-yard run on the first play of the second period. Georgia 28, Tennessee 17 ATHENS, Ga.

Rodney Hampton ran for 196 yards and two touchdowns and Tim Worlcy, returning after a year's absence because of academic ineligibility, had 144 yards and two scores for No. 12 Georgia. Hampton scored on runs of 43 yards in the first quarter and 2 on fourth dowH with 6:35 remaining to give the Bulldogs an 11-point lead over the 18th-rankcd Vols. The Bulldogs had to overcome Jeff Francis, who became Tennessee's all-time leader in passing yardage. Francis completed 25 of 39 for 354 yards, lifting his career total to 3,989 and breaking the record of 3,823 set by Alan Cockrell from 1981-83.

South Carolina 31 North Carolina 10 COLUMBIA, S.C. Junior tailback Harold Green rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns for No. 19 South Carolina. The Gamecocks' Todd Ellis threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns. Green (five receptions, 68 yards) ignited South Carolina in the second half before being carried off after suffering an leg injury with 5:52 left.

Florida 69, Montana St. 0 GAINESVILLE, Fla. Emmitt Smrth rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns and Stacey Simmons scored on a 93-yard pass play for Florida. Smith, a sophomore tailback, scored on a 19-yard run in the second quarter when Florida scored 24 points for a 34-0 halftime lead. Maryland 27, Louisville 16 COLLEGE PARK, Md.

Junior Neil O'Donncll threw two touchdown passes and ran tor anolticr in Maryland's 21-0 third-quarter burst. Trailing, 10-3, Maryland opened the second half with a 13-play, 78-yard scoring drive capped by O'DonncH's 3-yard pass to Mike Bcaslcy. O'Donncll then passed to Vernon Joincs for 66 yards to make the score 17-10. After J.B. Brown's interception, O'Donncll's 1-yard sneak made the score 24-10.

Kentucky 18, C. Michigan 7 LEXINGTON, Ky. Linebacker Randy Hollcran recovered a fumble in the end zone as Kentucky's defense dominated. Holleran's touchdown came after tackle Oliver Harnett forced the fumble at Central Michigan's 3 and gave Kentucky a 15-7 lead with 8:31 left in the third quarter. Each team committed nine fumbles.

Virginia 31 William Mary 23 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Tailback Marcus Wilson scored on Virginia's first two possessions of the second half. Virginia, beginning its 100th season, put together a 75-yard, seven-play drive on its first possession of the second half, capped by Wilson's 20-yard run to tic the score at 17. Shawn Moore passed 4 yards to Wilson for a 24-17 lead that Virginia held. Mississippi 24 Memphis State 6 JACKSON, Miss.

Joe Micklcs ran for 109 yards and a touchdown and Mississippi's special teams scored two others. The Rebels scored on Micklcs' 13-yard run, a 17-yard blocked punt return by Stcvon Moore and an 83-yard punt return by Pat Tulanc 33 Tennessee-Chattanooga 19 NEW ORLEANS Tulanc was sparked by two quick third-quarter touchdowns, a 93-yard kickoff return by Michael Pierce and a 59-yard punt return by Mitchell Price. Tcrrcncc Jones passed to Jerome Mcintosh for a 17-yard touchdown in the first quarter and found him again in the second quarter for a 27-yard score. Mississippi St. 21 Louisiana Tech 14 STARKVILLE, Miss.

Tailback Hank Phillips scored two times from short yardage to power Mississippi State. Phillips' winning score came in the final period and capped a nine-play, 65-yard drive, keyed by a 19-yard pass from sophomore Eric Underwood to tight end Sam Wright. N. Carolina St. 45 W.

Carolina 6 RALEIGH, N.C. North Carolina State quarterback Preston Poag had three 1-yard scoring runs and freshman running back Anthony Barbour scored two touchdowns in his first collegiate game. Poag, one of three quarterbacks used by coach Dick Sheridan, capped drives of 21, 26 and 78 yards. East directed six first-half scoring drives for No. 16 West Virginia.

Harris had 163 yards total offense in the first half, throwing for 90 yards and one touchdown and rushing for 73 yards and another score. Syracuse 31, Temple 21 SYRACUSE, N.Y. Michael Owens and Daryl Johnston staked Syracuse to a 14-0 lead with first-quarter touchdowns, and the Orangemen extended their unbeaten string to 14 games. Wake Forest 31 Villanova 11 VILLANOVA, Pa. Sophomore Tony Rogers ran for 101 yards and a touchdown for Wake Forest, which played a Division 1 opponent for the first time since 1980.

Navy 27, James Madison 14 ANNAPOLIS, Md. Backup quarterback Gary Mcintosh ignited Navy with a 37-yard touchdown run late in the first half. 1' 7 i' I zip; play after the kickoff and Western's Joel Smccngc recovered at the Badgers' 17. Davis carried 2 yards for the touchdown three plays later and Western led, 21-11, with 8:58 left in the quarter. Kruse completed 22 of 40 for 247 yards and threw one interception.

Davis had 24 carries for 136 yards. Duke 31, Northwestern 21 LVANSTON, 111. Anthony Dilweg passed for 353 yards and two touchdowns and Randy Jones scored on two 1-yard runs. Dilweg completed 29 of 40. North-western's Greg Bradshaw completed 17 of 30 for 250 yards and three touchdowns, all to wide receiver Richard Buchanan, but Bradshaw also was sacked five times.

The Blue Devils opened a 28-0 lead. The Wildcats gained 2 yards rushing in the first half, which ended with Duke leading, 28-7. Eastern Michigan 24, Miami, Ohio, 17 YPSILANTI, Mich. Bob Foster and Tom Sullivan scored fourth-quarter touchdowns to lift Eastern Michigan to a Mid-American Conference victory. Foster rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

Miami held a 17-3 halftime lead, but Eastern Michigan pulled within 17-10 on Foster's 4-yard run with 2:57 left in the third quarter. Eastern Michigan tied the score when Foster scored on a 1-yard dive with 11:41 left in fourth quarter. Sullivan put Eastern Michigan ahead with a 1-yard run with 1:24 left. Southwest equaled a school record with four field goals. Baylor limited Nevada-Las Vegas to two first downs and 49 total yards.

UTEP 37, Mankato St. 3 EL PASO, Texas Senior running back John Harvey scored two touchdowns and broke Texas-El Paso's all-time rushing record. Harvey rushed for 125 yards on 15 carries to boost his career mark to 2,937. Tulsa 35, Kansas State 9 TULSA, Okla. Sophomore quarterback T.J.

Rublcy threw for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Kansas Slate has lost 17 straight openers. Lamar 42, W. Texas St. 21 BEAUMONT, Texas Quarterback Shad Smith threw three touchdown passes and Lamar's defense returned two interceptions for The Associated Press on Saturday.

Nebraska won, 63-1 3. west 5th-ranked UCLA sails in opener Republic Sports Wires PASADENA, Calif. Darryl Henley returned a punt 89 yards for a' touchdown and Troy Aikman launched his Hcisman Trophy campaign with three scoring passes' Saturday night, powering No. 5 UCLA to a 59-6 rout of San Diego State. Eric Ball gained 122 yards on 17 carries for the Bruins, who built a 31-0 halftime lead.

UCLA, which faces No. 2 Nc-; braska next week, amassed 538 total yards. Aikman, who completed 13 of 17 for 155 yards and no interceptions, had touchdown passes of 43 yards to Laurence Burklcy, 15 to Reggie -Moore and 2 to Mark Estwick in the first half. He left after guiding a touchdown drive to open the third quarter. Estwick scored on a 3-yard run and Corwin Anthony scored on a 2-yard pass from backup Ron Caraghcr ii the third quarter.

Freshman Shawn Wills had touchdown runs of 30 and 2 yards in the fourth period. Alfredo Vclasco kicked a 32-yard field goal in the second. San Diego State's Brad Piatt, in his first game as the successor to Todd Santos, the most prolific passer in NCAA history, was 16 for 31 for 197 yards. He was sacked five times for 38 yards. Air Force 29 Colorado State 23 FORT COLLINS, Colo.

Greg Johnson ran for two touchdowns and Air Force survived a late rally. Johnson's second touchdown from 10 yards out gave the Falcons' a 29-10 lead. Colorado State's Scooter Molan- dcr, who completed 26 of 46 for 323 yards, made the score close with fourth-quarter touchdown passes of 20 yards to Mark Holmes and 28 to Todd Ycrt. Air Force quarterback Dee Dowis, who set an NCAA single-season quarterback rushing record with 1,315 yards last season, gained 55. San Jose State 51 New Mexico State 0 LAS CRUCES, N.M.

Junior tailback Johnny Johnson scored four touchdowns and rushed for 92 yards and quarterback Ken Lutz passed for 233 yards in a Big West Conference game. The Spartans, two-time defending conference champs, have defeated the Aggies five straight times and have. outscorcd them, 199-16, since the series began in 1984. Fresno State 68 New Mexico 21 ALBUQUERQUE Freshman Mark Barsotti completed 15 of 18 for 221 yards and a touchdown as Fresno State handed New Mexico its 12th straight loss. Fresno State scored on its first 10 possessions.

Taylor guides Nebraska rout of Utah State Republic Sports Wires CHAMPAIGN, III. Steve Broussard ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Timni Roscnbach scored three times as Washington Slate trounced Illinois, 44-7, Saturday. The victory was the Cougars' first on the road in nearly three years. It was the debut of Illinois coach John Mackovic. Broussard, 5-foot-7, was Washington State's leading receiver last season with 59 catches.

This year, the Cougars plan to use him more in the backficld, a role he enjoyed against the Illini as he carried 27 times. Often moving behind two, 290-pound linemen on the left side, Broussard scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards. He gained 137 yards in the first half. It is the first time school officials have organized a photo day for fans. Defensive tackle Andre Lacey underwent surgery Saturday afternoon to repair his fractured and dislocated right ankle. It will take about six to nine months for Lacey to recuperate. Films showed another defensive lineman lost his balance and fell on Lacey's leg, snapping the ankle.

After the photo day, the Sun Devils went through a game-day walk-through. They go into normal game-week preparations Monday for their Saturday opener against Illinois (0-1). Tackle Michael Simmons, who has been advised by ASU team doctors and neurologist Hal Pittman not to play again, has scheduled an appointment with another neurologist to get a second opinion. Arkansas goes to air early, shellacks Pacific Pitt runs roughshod over Bruce, N. Iowa Republic Sports Wires LITTLE ROCK Fullback Barry Foster scored three touchdowns and quarterback Quinn Grovcy threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Arkansas beat Pacific, 63-14, Saturday night.

It was the most points by the Razorbacks since they beat Northwest Louisiana, 64-0, in 1947. Grovcy completed 5 of 10 for 97 yards in the first quarter. Arkansas averaged only 10 passes per game last season. North Texas 29 Texas Tech 24 LUBBOCK, Texas Running back David McGinty ran 20 yards for a touchdown to cap a second-half comeback. Keith Chapman kicked field goals of 51, 55 and 46 yards and linebacker Rex Johnson scored on a 46-yard interception return for North Texas, which trailed, 24-10.

Baylor 27, UNLV 3 WACO, Texas Sophomore Eld-win starting his first game, rushed for 142 yards and Jeff Ireland Republic Sports Wires PITTSBURGH Darnell Dicker-son threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and Adam Walker ran for 148 yards and two scores as Pittsburgh routed Northern Iowa, 59-10, Saturday night. Walker scored on an 89-yard run on the first play of the second half. It was the longest run by a Pitt back in 71 years and keyed a 31-point third quarter. The victory spoiled the Northern Iowa debut of former Ohio Slate coach Earlc Bruce. The loss is believed to be the worst suffered by a Bruce-coached team.

"Really, Pitt took it easy on us," said Bruce, noting the Panthers didn't score in the final 18 minutes. "We killed ourselves with mistakes, the kind you can't make against a wcll-coachcd team like Pitt." Pitt had four scoring plays of 47 or more yards, including Alonzo Hampton's 71 -yard punt return.
