Campbell i I- r'. FLETCHER. Enid Peers, formed Logical Machine about four years ago and has sold 1,500 machines world wide with a present backlog of 500 machines. Providing an analogy to the concepts of both ADAM and TINA, Mr Peers said in Sydney last week tnat before people could write for themselves they had to use professional letter writers. This was expensive, cumbersome, the customer did not know whether the letter writer was in fact writing what he wanted him to write and also he had to use the writer to read any answer received.

In computing, the uninitiated had to employ professional systems analysts and programmers and the same process was repeated. However, the advantages of both ADAM and TINA were Reactions last week by two companies using computers based on very different operating concepts would seem to substantiate claims made for the new machines. The claims made for the computers, ADAM and TINA, are that they are extremely easy to program by utilising a dictionary of standard English words and that program modifications are equally easy to make. The machines are manufactured by Logical Machine Corp, California. United Data Centres, Rydalmere-based and long-established computer service bureau, has recently acquired the distribution rights for these and other products out of the Logical Machine stable.

Data Centres about TINA, the claim that it used the English language "threw us off completely" because of doubts as to whether a computer could be programmed in this manner. However, as soon as TINA was inspected, the company bought it.

The proprietor of a newly established service bureau who does not wish to be named for business reasons said ADAM was a "fantastic" machine because it was tremendously easy to program. The proprietor, formerly associated with DATA 100, has had 14 years' experience in selling computers and associated equipment. Noting that both ADAM and TINA had "credibility" gaps to overcome because of claims made, the proprietor said although he was not a programmer he had written one system a week on average over the past four months for clients. The proprietor estimated he could write programs for 30 per cent less cost than by using conventional computer languages. He has ordered another ADAM to install at a separate site for customer convenience and each machine could act as a backup to the other.

si' iovv'T ana gr." mother of Steven. Lisa, Paul and Mb it hew. Rest In Peace. that the programs could be written in English. These claims have been greeted with a certain amount of scepticism by computer practitioners and industry writers.

However, two users contacted bore out the accuracy of the claims. Bidder Bros Pty Ltd, of Brook-vale, is a manufacturer of emergency power supply equipment and is moving into energy conservation. The general manager, Mr George Bidder, said programming was "very, very easy" and there was no mystery of any kind associated with the TINA machine installed. Mr Bidder said as a businessman "he did not know too much about computers" but had been looking for a system over the past three years. However, the systems he saw were very rigid and he believed he would not have full control on what the computer was doing without enlisting outside help.

On the other hand, TINA was based on English language and programs were easy to write and to change without outside help. The technical director, Mr Gunter Jurgens, said the company had almost decided on an IBM System 1 computer. Initially performing processing work for these two companies, UDC now gets the bulk of its work from outside businesses. In 1977, it diversified into the computer equipment field by acquiring the Australian distributorship for General Automation Incorporated, of the' United States, and has developed application packages, PEGASUS, to go with the General Automation computers. UDC did not see any conflict in holding the distribution rights for both companies as the computers were different in size and concept. On the one hand, UDC had sold very large General Automation machines to companies which had previous computing experience whereas other companies did not want to get involved with programming themselves. Also, the price of a General Automation system ranged from $50,000 to $250,000 while ADAM cost between $32,000 and $35,000 and TINA about $18,000.

However, so far as Logical Machine Corp is concerned, the "democratising" of computer power does not end with ADAM and TINA. The corporation has developed a voice response system and as a microphone is used to activate the unit, it is appropriately enough called MIKE. Some 55 MIKEs have been installed world-wide and while the unit now costs $3,000 to $5,000, Mr Peers said he expected that price to be "decimated" over the next three to four years and indeed a dictating typewriter was only some five to seven years away. What people vould do with MIKE would depend on their ingenuity, Mr Peers said, observing that his company was working with a telephone company to eventually incorporate MIKE in the telephone and so obviate dialling. The distribution agreement between Logical Machine Corp and United Data Centres would be "a blending of conservatism with flamboyance," UDC's general manager, Mr Colin Murdoch, said last week.

Mr Murdoch, an accountant, professes to be conservative, while the founder of Logical Machine, Mr John Peers, is certainly flamboyant in witty, entertaining speech, if not in dress. Mr Peers is serious, though, in explaining: "Yes, you can program ADAM and TINA in common, everyday English words and you don't have to be a programmer to do it." It is surprising that incredulity surrounds these products for one of the objectives of the computer industry should have been to develop a product that can be used by "everyman." As Mr Peers say, he has two types of reaction to his machines: "The people who have never seen a computer before just go ahead and do what they want to do and do not think there is anything magical about it. "However, the computer professional wants to know all the technical details and whether it will handle other (programming) languages." Mr Peers said at the Hilton Hotel where TINA was on display at last week's DATA-WEEK computer exhibitionseminar that other equipment manufacturers were "selling tickets for a train ride and the buyers had to go where the train went. "We are teaching people to drive the train so they can go anywhere they want to go." Mr Peers, an industrial chemist who moved into the computer field, started his own company in Britain, sold it and then moved to the United States where he formed Logical Machine Corp. United Data Centres was formed 10 years ago by the merger of the data processing granacnnaren.

August loving father and father-, SEROCZYNSKI, The computer industry had performed a "very good job" of confusing buyers, a visiting United States computer executive said in Sydney last week. If a prospect took brochures from three suppliers he could not make a meaningful evaluation of those products because so often the brochures contained "misleading" information, he said. Mr Marvin Goldberg, director of distributor operations, MAI International, US, was speaking at the Neutral Bay premises of the Rank-Basic Four division of Rank Industries Pty Ltd.

Mr Goldberg, who has been in the computer industry since 1961, said the purpose of computers was to provide benefits of insight as to how a business was performing and to help in resolving business problems. Computing was not about numbers, a fact that many people had forgotten. Rank-Basic Four markets the Basic-Four computers manufactured by Management Assistance Inc (MAI) which range in price from $25,000 to $300,000. The most popular model, the 410, sells from $40,000 to $50,000. Since MAI and Rank-Basic Four stress what the computer can do rather than how it does it, it came as no surprise when Mr Goldberg said the operating system was the most important segment of these MAI machines.

The operating system is an integral part of a computer pulling all components together to ensure the application programs are used efficiently. Mr Goldberg said that unlike IBM Corp, MAI would not "unbundle" or charge separately for the operating system although application programs were 1979, at hospital, of Pennant Hills, beloved wife of Reg. loving mother of Judy, mother-in-aw of Peter, dear nanna of Gillian and Andrew, At pirate. BROCKHILL, Jessica Alva. August 6. 1979 (suddenly), of Treatt Avenue, Padstow, beloved husband of Dorothy, dearly loved father of Carol, Robert, Graeme and Peter. Mr Goldberg charged for separately from the computer equipment itself. Mr Goldberg said large computer manufacturers did not understand the small business market.

IBM offered "cradle to the grave" security for its clients, but by charging separately for each item of the complete computer system, the customer, properly or not, did not get the feeling that he was being "looked after." A move to retail selling has occurred recently in the computer industry. Mr Goldberg said he did not think this would be a successful approach as customers required hand-holding and required a "total systems" solution to their business problems. He did not think a store-front operation would do this. MAI also markets a word-processing machine, Wordstream, and while Australia would seem to be an attractive market for this product, the company was in the early stages of investigating the market and its competitive pressures, Mr Goldberg said. Most people know about the use of word-processors in the office but fewer people realise that they can also be used most successfully in more complex, processes such as writing a book.

A senior lecturer in politics at Melbourne University, Mr David found that use of the art faculty's Sigma Data Wordplex 1 gave him greater flexibility when writing. He used it extensively when working on a political philosophy book about the relationship between Marxism and Liberalism. It allowed him to move backwards and forwards in the text, correct clumsy sentences and change paragraphs around. Mr Tucker said he normally worked by sketching out short sections of text and interleaving them with corrections in a loose leaf folder. By using the word processor he was able to make corrections more easily and get a clean copy of his work at an earlier stage.

He said the word processor definitely speeded up his work but it was difficult to estimate by how much. Mr Tucker used an author's training package to learn how to operate the machine. He found this an easy skill to master. He used the machine after hours as it is mainly used by the department's office staff being the only word processor in an academic department in the university. He is now using the wordplex in working on a second book while the first is in the process of being published.
