The Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday, March 7, 1987 Page 42 pilgered. How the Prime rAS it an interview with the Prime Minister or an audience with John Pilger? Hard to tell really. But in any case, by the end of the week, the 7.30 Report's (ABC) bright idea of TV EXTRA lent television coverage of the artsi The week's Australian mini-series r-no week now seems complete without one" was Neville Vie Far Country (Channel 9), starring Sigrid Thornton and' Michael York. It was a simple love story set mainly in Australia shortly after World War II. The production went out of its way to highlight details of Australian rural life immediately after the war and the effect extensive migration had on that life.

Michael York's role as a doctor trying to keep quiet about his'service in the German army gave him ample opportunity to click his heels and practise his German accent By the end of proceedings, in which he had become amorously entangled with one Sigrid Thornton's Jennifer (whom he called Michael had just about perfected saying, "Bck ze pardon" and Ze air is like His other trick was to stop saying "an" and so that he was able to reply to Chennifer when she kept pressing him to take up medicine again "Vot is so rrong with chob in office?" A Far Country vzs goot yarn, so long you not expectink too much. Vot more you vant from Crawfords, eh? and not botched up like this In other words, send for Carleton. He should have been given the job in the first place. The first of the Sunday Afternoon programs (ABC) this week was filled with items of interest and quality. Not the least interesting was a conversation between Sunday After noon's host Ian Ross, and Margaret Whitlam, in the course of which Mrs Whitlam revealed that her turbulent husband had helped make ends meet during his early days as a backbencher in Parliament by picking up a little work at the bar.

He was up in tenancy matters," said Mrs Whitlam with just the suggestion of a smirk. That immediately invoked a vision of the Great Man, wigged and robed, arguing in court about stains on the carpet, grease on the walls and mildew in the shower recess. Fortunately such impossibly incongruous thoughts were soon swept away by an intriguing film about the writer Peter Carey and an interview with John Cleese. Sunday Afternoon is a welcome addition to the ABC's currently excel starts questions with, "It seems to many people in this country or A lot of people have put it to me or "People no longer regard you point was not lost on the Prime Minister. The second thing was that the interview as shown had obviously been heavily edited.

On a few occasions the Prime Minister appeared to have been cut off in mid-answer. Both Pilger and Jane Singleton the following night claimed that the planned interview time had been cut short. As far as this viewer was concerned, -that complaint evoked not terribly much sympathy. If the interview had been too short, then the item should not have been run. The third thing was that Pilger's questions had obviously been added after the interview.

This is a fairly common and unobjectionable occurrence in television journalism. But on this occasion, when Pilger was attempting to engineer a confrontation with the Prime Minister, it seemed odd that he should have had the privilege of rephrasing his questions after the event while the Prime Minister did not enjoy an equivalent privilege of rephrasing his answers. Not that his answers required much rephrasing. An ambush like Pilger's seems to bring out some of the old fire not often seen in the Prime Minister's more image-conscious days! The interview ended with Pilger back on his sofa intimating that. the Prime Minister had cut the interview short by walking out.

Why the walk-out hadn't been included in the film wasn't explained. Viewers were left wondering what sort of milage Richard Carleton would have obtained from a Prime Ministerial walk-out. Pilger then claimed that he had asked the Prime Minister if he could ask a question about why so many Aboriginal people felt betrayed, and what he intended to do in 1988 to "effect an historic The Prime Minister, he claimed, had said he couldn't answer that question, he didn't have time, and left. The following night Jane Singleton made a curious correction. She said that if the impression had been given at the end of the Pilger interview that the Prime Minister couldn't answera question from Pilger about Aborigines marking the fourth anniversary of the election of the Hawke Government by wheeling in a heavyweight to interview Bob Hawke was beginning to look not jtjite so bright after all.

The problem, unfortunately, was the- choice of heavyweight. 'John Pilger, an Australian journalist who has 'Spent most of his working life ir England, has produced some outstanding documentaries in his career notably his documentary on the effect of the war in Cambodia. 'But he also has produced some very aggravating documentaries, the most recent of these being his sanctimonious pfece on Australia's Aborigines. 1 It" was. in reaction to John Pilger's earnest that Auberon Waugh coined the verb "to pilger" (from the Menchje meaning to give free Jein, to your moral 's Bob Hawke can consider himself to have been comprehensively pilgered in his 7.30 Report interview.

The interview began with John Pilger sitting on a sofa explaining that he hadn't interviewed Bob Hawke for 11 years. He then went on to point out the questions he intended asking the Prime Minister questions concerning the Hawke Government's record on helping the underprivileged, its inaction during the Murdoch takeover of the Herald and Weekly Times and its policies concerning Aborigines. The first thing you noticed in the interview was that Pilger was using the same suspect line of questioning employed by George Negus to so enrage Margaret Thatcher: the line that John Pilger botched ambush. and their rights, then that impression was certainly unintentional. Well, what were we to make of all of these unintentional impressions? On the one hand, it was good to see the Prime Minister being confronted by questions that he would obviously have preferred not to have been asked.

On the other hand, if there is going to be an ambush and blood on the screen, then let the exercise be properly done 3 NBN 3 ATN 7 SBS ABN 2 NBN 3 ATN 7 SBS HBN 2 6.00: Pastor Cho. 6 JO: World Tomorrow. 7.00: Hour Of Power. 8.00: Sunday Topical. 11.00: Sport Centre 12.00: Movies The Mil-; lion Pound Note.
