After a memorial service for the lost crew, Pascoe decides to give Snook another chance.

On this trip the boy shows he can perform his duties well. But another disaster looms as the clouds gather. Caught in the storm, the Blue Fin is almost ripped apart by a waterspout. The sole survivors are Pascoe, badly injured and unable to manage the boat, and Snook. It isn't the most inventive Yet the collaboration rarely fulfilled these intentions completely.

The pulsing of repeated notes in the orchestral share of the slow movement lacked the sense of inevitable timing and spacing the movement needs. The finale became dogged rather than exhilarating. The final bars for orchestra alone failed to clinch the mood of the work's close. The makings of a satisfying performance of the concerto were present most notably in the pianist's musical gestures (some of them unanswered in spirit), without attaining the kind of secure concentration in which they could thrive. FOR THE second year, the South Australian Film Corporation has produced a family film for the Christmas crowds. Last year, it was Storm Boy and now, Blue Fin.

With any luck, this kind of cinematic gift-giving could become a tradition. Blue Fin, like Storm Boy, is a story about a difficult growing-up, adapted by Sonia Borg from Colin Thiele's novel. Set in the South Australian fishing town of Streaky Bay, the film concerns the adventures of Snook (Greg Rowe), a fisherman's son who faces a near-impossible challenge, succeeds and wins the respect of his dubious father (Hardy Kruger). Kruger plays Bill Pascoe, a tuna fisherman who captains the Blue Fin, an elderly vessel with a reputation for trouble. Snook's first trip on the Blue Fin is a fiasco.

The boy is held to account for a bad catch and also embarrasses his father by falling overboard in a race with another tuna boat. Pascoe is prepared to banish his determined son to dry land when tragedy occurs another boat is lost at sea. Among its 4 h' priately silent and stern. Mr Paciullo said yesterday: Tt was the Premier's decision. I accepted without question." The position, filled at the Premier's discretion, carries an additional salary of $3,620, expenses of $1,550 and a Government car for official occasions.

Mr Paciullo was appointed in 1976 after surprisingly failing by one vote to win a position in the first Wran Cabinet. He had been favoured to become a minister after serving in the shadow cabinet while in Opposition, but contributed to his own defeat by failing to vote for himself His duties included serving as the Government's liaison officer with the ethnic communities. It is understood that two factors figured prominently in Mr Wran's decision not to reappoint him. The first was that the Minister for Decentralisation, Mr Hallam, MLC, was also appointed Minister assisting the Premier and, as such, would assume some of Mr Paciullo's responsibilities. The second was dissatisfaction among some Labor MPs in 1976 over his being appointed rather than elected.

Rather than cause new rivalries on the backbench Mr Wran decided not to renew the position. IT IS NOW 50 years since Spanish director Luis Bunuel, The Minister for Youth and Community Services, Mr Jackson, said the committee would report on the general conditions of Aborigines in NSW, particularly in housing, health, education, employment, welfare and cultural issues. It would also make recommendations regarding land rights and the Commonwealth-State arrangements for Aboriginal matters. Members of the committee are: Mr Ralph Clough, Mr Ken Gabb, Mr Maurice Keane, Mr Bill Knott; Mr George Petersen, Mr Kevin Ryan, Mrs Mary Meillon, Mr Ernest Park and Mr Garry West. CHILD WELFARE: A discussion paper on proposed amendments to child welfare laws would be prepared before the end of the present session of Parliament, the Premier, Mr Wran, said. Rather than introduce a bill to Parliament as had been proposed the Government would draft a bill and make it available to the public for discussion with related material in the form of a "green paper." A spokesman for the Minis ter for Youth and Community Services, Mr Jackson, said it would provide for a major overhaul of the State's child welfare laws.

Before touring Singapore and Malaysia for Musica Viva, and then proceeding to Switzerland for advanced study, he gave a farewell recital in the Australia Music Centre at twilight yesterday. He has a natural, almost casual style of playing which avoids all artifice and showiness, so that the generous garland of Renaissance pieces which comprised his program minor key plaints of love, major key dances, all meant for an era with less background noise than in ours unfolded with cumulative pleasure. Inevitably, a program like this is idiomatically limited, but within a few decades on either side of 1600, and several European countries, Max Hynam found just enough rhythmic and harmonic variety to hold my interest.

Had he started punctually, he would have held it even longer. TV award The Arthur Cowan Award for achievement in commercial television has gone this year to Queensland's longest serving television administrator. He is James William McKay, who has been general manager of the Brisbane channel QTQ 9 for 23 years. JEAN-PIERRE Jacquil-lat's work with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in the first half of last night's Town Hall concert, made considerably better musical sense than his first appearance with the orchestra some little time ago. The flow of the music was fitful on occasion.

There were some strained and uneasy moments. But at least the conductor did not appear to be engaged in some hectic private struggle with the continuity of the works under his guidance. Bizet's major symphony and Schumann's fourth symphony were carried over from earlier Opera House programs. The new work in the series was Beethoven's third piano concerto. Mr Jacquillat's direction seemed to encourage the orchestra to get the concerto off to a rather clanking start The changes in dynamics were raw and blunt, some instruments sounding unusually heavy.

John Lill's first solo entry established a greater measure of poise, certainty and control in the performance as a whole.
