1 11.30: Edgar Wallace Presents (Rpt) (bw). 12.30: 5.00: An experiment in co-operation Fob the amateur sleuths by TOM BALLANTYNE WHODU ABC-TV. Friday, 8.30 pm, previewed by GARRY SHELLEY -Jon Pertwee Police forces of Australia take note; A brave experiment between CB-ers and the Victorian Police in Melbourne has been a stunning success. The PACER Experiment was launched last November, in the Maroondah PcDice District, on the north-eastern outskirts of the City. "PACER" stands for the Police Associated Citizens Emergency Radio.

And it has been such a help to police it now seems almost certain to be implemented throughout the Melbourne metropolitan area. Chief Superintendent J. J. Ryan, the head of police in the Maroondah District, said the pilot scheme using CB in coordination with police operations had been a valuable part of the offensive against crime in the area. PACER involved more than 130 CBers being used by police in searches for lost children, outbreaks of vandalism and the reporting of crimes committed in the district.

"PACER is a great form of crime prevention." said Chief Inspector Ryan. "It is here to stay in this district at least. "As long as they per- Amateur sleuths Miss Marples and Hercule Poirot enjoy the game of guess the villian in the latest series of Thames Television's crime game. Although the first program. A Time To Dye, was not available for previewing, a later episode called Portrait In Black, proved entertaining.

The compere for the series is Jon Pertwee, whom viewers will recall as television's Dr Who. His cheery face and whimsical repartee make the plots thicken even more. He can afford to be glib. He knows who the villain is. The program begins with a short play in which a crime often a murder is committed.

The culprit is not revealed, however, there are plenty of clues within the play. The panelists then select the short scenes they wish to see again and they may interrogate their suspects. The panel of four consists of two regulars. Anouska Hempel and Patrick Mower (from TV's Callan and Special Branch series) and two Let's hope that other cities and towns take note of what is happening in Melbouurne. It might even be a good idea for State police outside Victoria to make an approach to Mr Miller and ask for copies of the Maroondah submission.

There is no harm in finding out how this sort of co-ordinated effort actually works in practice. CB already helps the police in many ways. The Citizens' Radio Emergency Service Teams are continually passing on information to the police about car accidents and other emergencies. There will, no doubt, be some debate as to whether CRBST should be used in an official joint role with police forces father than setting up a completely different organisation. This shouldn't cause any pYoblems.

Most of those who would take part in a PACER scheme would use CREST as well. The important thing is to have police extend their crime-fighting activities to using CB. form, we will have work for them." A report on the pilot scheme has already been submitted to Victoria's Chief Commissioner, Mr S. I. Miller.

It makes it clear the idea has been a success. Last June. Mr Miller had commented he was pleased with the progress of the scheme and told all district heads the system might be extremely valuable. The indication then is that Melbourne could be the first Australian city to have a co-ordinated police-CB system to fight crime. Much has been said about the lack of co-operation between police and CB users in many parts of Australia, including Sydney.

The Melbourne scheme has shown that it is completely possible for both sides to work together, in the open, on an official basis. I know that in many cities there is a great deal of support from within police forces for CB and the useful purposes to which it might be put. guest celebrities. In the case of the preview crime they were the author Jackie Collins and Norman Bowler from Softlv, Softly. The crime in Portrait In Black occurs in the darkroom of a photographic studio where an egotistical, temperamental artist is poisoned by coffee, laced more than liberally with potassium cyanide.

But who was the culprit? The interesting part about the Whodunnit? series is that all the actors look sour and suspect and have dialogue that is bitchily smug. The acting is corny, but forgivable thanks to the red herrings that lurk behind every remark. As a sleuth, I failed miserably. I had the wrong suspect heading for the gallows halfway through act one.
