Monday at the mortuary. REPUBLIC CITY REPUBLIC B15 AP Ratzenberger, mailman Cliff Claven on the TV series Cheers, the casket of Nicholas Colasanto, the series' Coach Ernie Colasanto suffered a heart attack Tuesday in Los Angeles. Friends bid farewell to late 'Cheers' actor United Press International PROVIDENCE, R.I. Actor Nicholas Colasanto, better known as Coach Ernie Pantusso on the television series Cheers, was given a final standing ovation during a funeral Mass on Saturday in a church not far from where he was born. Colasanto, 61, a Providence native, died of a heart attack Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles.

He was eulogized during services at Holy Cross Church as a "truly terrific guy who filled the chapters of our lives." "You done good, Coach. We love you," said actor George Garro, a longtime friend of Colasanto. More than 175 family members and friends attended the 75-minute service at the church. At least 100 others gathered outside. Among those in attendance was Colasanto's fellow actor John Ratzenberger, who plays the part of mailman Cliff Claven on the hit series.

Colasanto, who began his Holly. wood career as an acting coach and director, was buried at St. Anne's Cemetery in Cranston. The Christian service was offered by the Rev. Joseph Protano, who alluded to Colasanto's nearly 20- year bout with alcoholism, calling his life, "a long and difficult one but a good Colasanto, who twice was nominated for Emmy awards as the dim-witted but lovable Coach on' the comedy series, was divorced and had no children.

"It's fair to say, Nick, you lived a terrific life," Garro said. "He made the part of Coach an integral part of the series (which) was a second family to Colasanto, one of seven children, is survived by his sisters, Raffelena, 76, of Johnston, and Phyllis, 69, of Providence, and a nephew, Joseph Pietrantonio, 37, of Johnston. "We'll (still) have Nick in living color in Cheers, and that will be special for us," Garro said. "We'll. laugh a lot for him." A memorial service for Colasanto also is being planned in Hollywood.

Bird broiled in jet crash is nursed Associated Press PENSACOLA, Fla. A veterinary hospital is nursing the only victim from last week's crash of a Navy training jet, in which the pilot walked away from the wreck. A bluejay with scorched wings and blistered feet was taken to the Navy Boulevard Animal Hospital by ambulance about an hour after Wednesday's crash, veterinarian Cliff Owen said. "One of the emergency medical technicians brought it in and asked us if we could help," Owen said. 801-Funeral "They dropped it off and then were gone." The Navy TA-4J Skyhawk jet, piloted by Capt.

Richard Packard, lost power and clipped the top of one house before landing between two other homes in the densely populated Navy Point area of Warrington. The bird was "kind of shocky, but we've got it through the shock and nursed it along," Owen said. "His feathers were burned and melted, but he will probably be all right as he gets new feathers in." Monday at Ajo Cemetery. Classic obsolete autos restored to second life Associated Press LOS ANGELES Some dream of a '65 Corvette or a classic Rolls-Royce. Jim Valentine's in love with the snub-nosed Nash Metropolitan, which chugged onto the scene in 1954 and off into the sunset in 1962. Valentine operates "Metropolitan Pit Stop" to service and rebuild the cars, and he wistfully refers to the 1950s as "the Metropolitan era." The first Metropolitan was designed by Nash- Kelvinator Corp. in 1949.

It was manfactured by the British for American Motors, which acquired Nash-Kelvinator in 1954. The car, a paragon of practicality, cost $1,500 and got good gas mileage. There were two models, a two-door hardtop or convertible. And the cars came in shades of peach and turquoise and other odd colors. Valentine came to play a part in the Metropolitan story in 1973, when somebody stole his little 1957 Thunderbird.

"It was the time of an oil crunch, and I remembered the Nash Metropolitan," Valentine said. But after he bought that first used Metropolitan, he discovered a sad reality. Mechanics told him the car was obsolete. He began to stockpile parts and wrote to the original manufacturers and subcontractors. And he found a company that made taillight frames to replace the originals.

Other Metropolitan owners heard about his collection, and his business was born. Now his rebuilt Metropolitans cost from $2,500 to $8,900, depending on the amount of restoration.
