8. Algona seniors get engineering awards TOM JONES RANDY RIEDINGER Two Algona high school seniors, Tom Jones and dy Riedinger; are among only three lowa high school seniors who have been awarded Engineer's Week Scholarships at Iowa State University, it was announced this week. The event is planned and presented by the students of the College of Engineering and is being held this week. Jones is the son of Mr. and Mrs.

Donald Jones of Algona and he received a $150 Randy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Riedinger, received a $125 scholarship. The other winner is from Bloomfield. The awards were made on the basis of high scholarship, leadership, activities and promise of successful professional future.

C. Irelan against Robert Ar. della and Earl Will. The case arose from a crash June 22, 1966. when the Irelan car was hit broadside by the Will truck at the intersection of 169 and 222 south of St.

Joe. The highway 222 is from Bode to Livermore. The defendants in the case have admitted liability and a jury was chosen to determine the amount of damages. Mr. Irelan asks $75,000 plus hospital, car, and other damages for a total of $83,541.28.

Mrs. Irelan died as the result of the crash and a settlement out of court is reported in a damage case brought. as the result of her death. Jurors are Leona. Lovstad.

Wesley tractor fire is put out Wesley The fire department answered a call to the George Goetz farm Friday evening where a tractor being used by Ronnie Ricke had caused a fire. It was exting. uished before the fire truck arrived. Ronnie was taken: to a doctor and was given a tetanus shot. Zender clothing store sold here Monday Sale of the Zender's Clothing Store in Algona to George Keleher of Belmond and Don MAdams of Estherville was announced today by owner Eugene Zender.

The new owners took possession Monday and will operate under the name of Keleher-McAdams Clothing, Mr. Keleher: will actively. manage the store and moved his family here while Mr. McAdams, who owns the McAdams Clothing firm at Estherville, will remain at Estherville. Mr.

Zender has owned the store since 1958 and it has been in the Zender family since 1922 when his late father, Frank Zender, formed a partnership with the late Bob Caldwell. Mr. Zender purchased the entire store in 19. 37. MR.

KELEHER, who is 41 years old, has had 21 years experience in the clothing business. the past: 14 years, 'he has. been a. partner in the Thompson Keleher store at Belmond. to that, he was in the clothing business at Eagle Grove, his home town.

His wife is the former Helen Olson. of Webster City and the couple have two children: Georgia, 18, a senior in high school, and Tim, 9 old. The family will move to Algona shortly. Mr. Keleher.

Nicholas Altman dies Monday at Fort Dodge Nicholas Altman, 80, retired St. Joe area farmer, died Monday morning at Mercy hospital, Fort Dodge, after a short illness.

Services are Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart church, Livermore, with the Reverend Father Gerald Skahill officiating. Burial will be in Joseph cemetery, St. Joe, with the Hamilton funeral home, Algona, in charge. The Livermore Legion will hold military graveside rites.

Nicholas Altman was born January 12, 1887 at White Lake, So. Dak. He was the son of Nicholas and Barbara Erpelding Altman. He came Iowa in 1893 and farmed in the St. Joe area until six years ago when he retired and moved to Livermore.

He was never married. Four sisters and two brothers survive. Elizabeth, Mrs. Herbert Cox, Cedar, Susie, Mrs. C.

Nineteen bands, the current "Miss lowa," a crack drum and bugle corps plus one of lowa's top baton twirlers and a host of ty young queens will be the feature attractions. Miss Jeanne Formanek, 23 and "Miss Iowa of 1968." will appear here under the sponsorship of the Algona JayCees.

She will ride in the morning parade which begins at 10:30 a.m. 'The parade will include a number of floats and march. ing units, all 19 bands and the 18 queens. THE NATIONALLY famous Decorah Kilties will also appear here. The group is composed of young Decorah boys who have appeared at two Presidential inaugurals, the Chicago Musicland Festival, Rose Bowl parade and many other national events.

After the parade, there will be a luncheon for bands starting at 11 a.m. -at the high school Annex and for bandmasters, wives and band queens beginning at 12 noon at the Algona Hotel. Jeanne's talent in the Miss America pageant this year was a portrayal of Alice in Wonderland and it won her a place among the top ten finalists. 4 LuVerne to lose doctor Dr. Robert D. Brainerd, who has had medical offices in LuVerne since Dec. 19, 19- 61, will leave LuVerne Wednesday, Oct.

11, preparatory to entering active service in the Army, he 'announced today. He and his wife. Constance, will leave next Wednesday for Fort Sam Houston where he expects to be inducted into the Army Medical Corps. Dr. Brainerd expects to take physical examinations beginning Oct.

16. His wife will remain there until it has been determined he has been inducted and will then return to LuVerne. The family pects to remain at LuVerne indefinitely. An office girl will keep his Clinic office open at LuVerne for the time being. Dr.

Brainerd, who is an osteopathic physician and surgeon, is one of four doctors in an eightcounty area who have been recalled to the Army. He served during the Korcan War in 1952 but had been on inactive duty since that time. Dr. Brainerd resigned from the LuVerne school board this week. He has rented the Clinic building for the past' six years.

The Brainerds have four children. Car crashes west of Algona An Algonan, Earl Eller, escaped without injury when his car went off the road and struck a pole miles south of Algona about 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Eller reported the crash to the sheriff's office and said his right rear tire blew out and he lost control. The car went into the ditch and struck the pole.

The 1964 Chevrolet had extensive damage. GASHED BY SAW Kenneth Roney received a deep gash on his left thigh last Thursday morning when an electric saw he was using slipped. Seven stitches were required to close the wound. Services for Mrs. W.

Mayer held Wednesday Funeral services for Mrs. William Mayer, 68, of rural Algona. were held at St. Benedict Catholic church Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Father Nicholas Ruba officiating.

Burial was in St. Benedict cemetery, the Hamilton funeral home, Algona, in charge. Pallbearers were Phil Arndorfer, Nick Arndorfer, Magnus Rahm, Julius Seiler, Richard Ferstl and Clarence Arn dorfer. Esther T. Wolf was born on August 3, 1899 at Mt.

Palatine, daughter of Frank and Barbara Lorenz Wolf. She came to the Wesley area with her. parents at the age of six months. She was married to William Mayer Oct. 24, 1922 at Wesley.

She died Monday at her farm home. Surviving besides her husband are three daughters and: a son: Stella Mae, Mrs. Robert Eischen, Algona; Jane, Mrs. Robert Cooper, Van Nuys, Ramona Mayer, Columbus, Ohio; and Robert, Algona. There are 13 grandchildren.

Sisters and brothers surviving are Julius Wolf, hnomen, Laura, Mrs. Urban Hommerding, Clarissa, Hertula, Leander, Waterloo; Wesley; Mrs. Clare Wingert, and Harold, of Eagle Bend, Minn. LEAVES FOR BELGIUM Mr. and Mrs.

Art Leek and Luana, Mrs. Darwin Leek and Lucinda Bierstedt drove to Minneapolis last Friday where they visited with the Louis Frasers, former Algonans. Mrs. Darwin Leek flew from Minneapolis to New York and on to Brussels, Belgium to live with her husband who is stationed there with the armed forces. She has. been twirling for the past 10 years and has won 178 medals and 437 trophies before winning the Senior National championship and retiring from competition in January, 19.
