Stardust features music from such folks as Perry Como and Frank Sinatra, and is designed to fill a niche between big band and adult contemporary music. KOPA, which is licensed for daytime-only operation, currently simulcasts with KSLX.

Hamilton said no live, local. announcers would be used at the outset. Target date, if details can be worked out, is Jan. 18. zone, on a broadcast field that Sauro built by looking into every nook and cranny in the rule book and working the rules to fill his needs CHANNEL CHANGE MTV and WGN-TV, currently seen by Dimension cable subscribers on channels 23 and 13, respectively, will flip-flop locations at the end of the month.

Dimension Vice President Ivan Johnson explained that MTV has been offering incentives to local cable companies for an improved channel position. The Channel 13 spot is better because of increased viewer traffic, falling between local Phoenix stations KPNX-TV (Channel 12) and KNXV-TV (Channel 15), which also should help Dimension in the area of local advertising sales. Dimension can sell time on MTV, but not on WGN-TV. Johnson also said that some locations that Dimension serves, such as hotels, have a limited channel capacity; the switch will make MTV available to these outlets for the first time. Dimension also announced that the Spanish-language, pay-channel Galavision (seen on Channel 41) will become a basic service (i.e.

free) service Jan. 31, except in Bill Sauro may never be able to lick the big boys at their own game. So, in the true spirit of entrepreneur-ship, he's revised the game somewhat. He's devised sort of a TV version of professional football in the spring, except his chances of succeeding are better than those of the now-defunct USFL. Sauro is president of KUSK-TV, the full-power Prescott station (Channel 7) that has a low-power translator in Phoenix on Channel 27.

With limited range, Channel 27 has had little hope of competing in the marketplace, despite a sports-heavy program schedule. What Sauro has done has been to run a couple of option plays: First, he petitioned the Federal Communications Commission in June for a power increase for Channel 27. Permission was granted in December, and the upgrade from 40,000 watts of effected radiated power to 250,000 watts should be completed by the end of March. The signal still won't be nearly as strong as those of the other stations, but the station's range should increase from 15 miles to 35 miles from South Mountain. Second, he sought out other available Sauro said earlier this week that he may simulcast music videos, news or some home-shopping service.

He views the mix of the five low-power stations in radio terms, as being sort of an AMFM combo on which advertising time could be sold to clients in tandem. Additionally, Sauro said he is considering "zoning" advertising, as newspapers sometimes do. For instance, a Scottsdale shopkeeper who might not be able to afford air time on one of the full-power stations could afford time on Channel 23. On another front, Sauro said he hopes to meet soon with Dimension cable to discuss leasing a cable channel on a part-time basis (evenings and weekends), which would enable the cable company's subscribers to receive KUSK-TV. Dimension isn't required by the federal government to pick up KUSK-TV, and hasn't done so, the result being that thousands of Valley viewers were unable to view Arizona State University's appearance in football's Freedom Bowl.

Officials of Dimension, which has 185,000 subscribers, confirmed that talks are in the offing. Sauro is optimistic. KUSK-TV appears headed for the end low-power channels in the Valley, purchasing previously allocated Channel 55 and Channel 61 in Phoenix, which haven't been in use. He also filed applications for and was granted Channel 17 in Mesa and Channel 23 in Scottsdale by the FCC. He plans to use Channel 55, which will have its tower on Shaw Butte and beam its signal into Moon Valley, Paradise Valley and northeast Phoenix, and Channel 17 as additional translators for KUSK-TV.

This will create what he describes as "a synthetic full-power station," which he expects to have assembled by May. As for Channel 61 and Channel 23, 8:00 P.M.
