20, 7:30 PM ASU ACTIVITY CENTER "RAZZ MA TAZZ" HALF TIME SHOW!" BRUINS By LLOYD HERBERG The Arizona Republic For fans who can't get enough baseball, a new professional league is coming to the Valley. Similar to extended spring training, the Arizona Rookie League will begin June 23 with a 60-game schedule that ends Aug. 31. The league will be composed of teams from the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics. "The idea is for our high school and Latin players to compete and be on a level equal to their abilities," said Walt Jocketty, director of baseball administration for the A's.

Team rosters will be limited to 30 players and league rules prohibit a club from having more than six players who are over 20 on the roster. In addition, players with more than one year of professional experience are excluded. No games will be played on Sunday. The Cubs and Padres will share facilities at Fitch Park in Mesa, while the Brewers will play at Compadre Stadium in Chandler and the A's at Scottsdale Community College. The league is the brainchild of Jocketty and Brewers farm director Bruce Mano.

The two, with some help this year from Tom Rome-nesko, the Padres' director of minor leagues and scouting, put together a proposal that Jocketty and Mano No. 3 ASU opens Six-Pac season at No. 16 UCLA By BOB EGER The Arizona Republic LOS ANGELES The Arix-ona State and UCLA baseball teams get a jump' on the rest of the Pac-10 Southern Division today. If their series here is anything like it was last year, the teams might spend 'some time jumping all over each other. When they met last season at Jackie Robinson Stadium, UCLA won by scores of 13-12 and 11-10 before ASU scored a 20-5 victory in the series finale.

UCLA won four of the six regular-season meetings, but ASU beat the Bruins twice in the NCAA West II regional tournament. ASU (16-1), ranked third by Baseball America, is off to its best start since the 1978 club began 17-1. UCLA (8-3) is ranked 16th by Bttfeball America, which lists five Six-Pac teams among its top 25. The rest of the league begins conference play next week. Coach Jim Brock said the Sun Devils can improve.

"I thought we would be an outstanding defensive club, but we're not there yet," Brock said. ASU is scheduled to pitch Linty Ingram (5-0, 1.00 ERA), David Cassidy (3-0, 2.01) and Kurt Dempster (2-1, 5.73). UCLA's probable starters are John Sutherland (2-1, 6.53), Scott Schanz (1-0, 4.41) and Dave Zancanaro (1-0, 1.64). TICKETS $3 AND $2.
