The smile is Wednesday, the Vatican announced today. "He was too good for this world," said Mrs Rosetta Scarcelli after viewing the Pope's body. She and her three-year-old son, Francesco, had made the pilgrimage by a long bus ride to pay their respects.

It was only a few metres from where he had died, aged 65, of a heart attack on Friday. The body of the 263rd Pontiff clad in his red and white papal vestments, lay on a bier, his white silk mitre resting on green and silver pillows, as the crowds filed past. A conclave Church's Cardinals to elect his successor will begin on October 14. John Paul's 33-day reign was the briefest in nearly four centuries but left behind the image of a humble and warmhearted parish-priest who had won immediate affection around th world. Austrian Cardinal Franz Koenig said the Pope's sudden death showed that papal duties had become too arduous for one man. He called on the Church to delegate more responsibilities.

Pope John Paul's private secretary discovered the body early on Friday. The lights were still burning and Thomas a'Kempis's book. Imitations of Christ, still in his hands. The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Jean Villot of France, then rushed into the room carrying a ritual silver hammer and accompanied by a Vatican doctor. Villot lightly tapped the late Pope on the forehead three times with the hammer and called the Pontiff by his given name three times in Latin: "Albino, Albino, Albino.

Are you dead?" When there was no reply, Villot pronounced the Pontiff dead, grasped the Pontiffs hand and removed the gold Ring of the Fisherman, a symbol of Papal power, and smashed it with the hammer. This signalled an end to John Paul's 33-day reign. Writ to ban plan on coast BRISBANE. A High Court writ seeking a declaration that the Federal Government acted illegally in approving the controversial Queensland Iwasaki tourist project will be taken out tomorrow. The Australian Conservation Foundation will apply in Melbourne for an injunction against the Federal Government over its handling of the Iwasaki issue. If an injunction is granted it could have the effect of blocking the $100m project near Yeppoon. It could freeze funds brought in from Japan for the tourist centre by business tycoon and land owner, Mr Y.

Iwasaki. This could affect the franchise agreement between Mr Iwasaki and the State Government which requires Mr Iwasaki to show by December 31 that he has sufficient money in the country for the project. Mr Iwasaki has not signed the Queensland international tourist centre agreement although it was rushed through Parliament last May during an all-night sitting. A new agreement and a new Act of Parliament would be necessary for the project to go ahead. run-lea csa a en Yes.
