For letting us be who we are, or who we want to hecome in the eye of our higher, inner self. For becoming a place where we all support each other in a unanimous effort to be able to enjoy life at its best. For letting the four seasons change our moods, possibilities, attitudes and habits. For letting us strive to create an ever-positive atmosphere of love between all people. For being a unique place that can be an example for how to direct and orchestrate the challenge of a 'rapidly progressing county, with a sound infrastructure, showing how we can house our citizens in buildings built from straw bales, aluminum cans, used tires, adobe bricks, poured pumice and even snow caves, if need be.

For counseling us to always be energized by the ever-changing painting of the sky above. For relinquishing our need for approval. For letting us shake the burden of judgment. For replacing our fear-motivating behavior with love-motivating behavior. Thank you, Taos.

The works usually come simply as paint-on-wood, with occasional adornments of tin or other metals. Some of the artists participating in the "Traditional and Innovative" show are Pat Pollard, Willie Wood, Pola Lopez de Jaramillo, Liz Steving, Sandra Hulse, Lydia Garcia, George Chacon, Jim Wagner, DeDee Mathieu, Sandra Lerner, Anita Rodriguez, Ed Sandoval and Melody Romancito of Taos; Jeanne Denver of Questa; Ann Dunbar of Albuquerque; Sheila Keefe and Elizabeth Kay of Chimayo; and Nicholas Herrera and Cecily Colbert of El Rito. The works range from Herrera's six-foot, two-inch high by four-foot wide Nuestra Seflora de Guadalupe to Lerner's mixed-media "Mother and Child," using glass and other found objects. Other works of note include two of Romancito's brightly colored acrylic-on-wood Guadalupes, which represent the holy mother in a new, modern-day light; a large ceramic angel done collaboratively by Wagner and Mathieu; Dunbar's "Garden Saint," canonizing a "new" angel that helps her garden grow; and Kay's six-foot wide retablo, to be hung in the inn's library room.

Caroline Lee, who curated the show, said most of the works were'done especially for the show by the invited artists. "The show was put together to give new insights into the retablo," Lee said. "The works range from very traditional to very experimental. I think it will give the viewer a newfound respect for the essence of the retablo The public needs and wants to know more about this art tradition. It's a tradition that's truly a window to the past, still existing in the present." The art of the santo that flourishes here is a function of faith: a salvation that's enriched the lives of European explorers who came here since Cortez.

That it has survived for more than 400 years is testimony to the startling aesthetic beauty, power and imagination of the religious folk art iconography represented in "Retablos: Traditional and Innovative." For a late-20th century celebration of. one of our region's most beloved and enduring art forms, it's worth a trip to The Taos Inn before Jan.15. Facing page, from top: "Chrlsto Cruciflcado" and "Nuestra Sefiora" by Victor Goler, Herrera's "Nuestra Seflora" and retablo by Jeanne Denver of Questa.
