QD The Jefferson CO 88 Piel de Zapa (1976, Ingrid Two of Arizona's most familiar and durable television news anchormen are being shifted to lesser roles at KTVK-TV (Channel 3).

Ray Thompson and Dave Nichols are being replaced as anchormen by Jim Scoutten on the 6 and 10 p.m. weekday editions of Eyewitness News, beginning today. Thompson will still be seen on camera, giving national news in a new approach on the 6 p.m. program, as well as supplying feature reports. Nichols, ousted from a 10 pjn.

seat, will continue to provide "Nichols' Worth of News" commentaries. "You have to try things. If they show evidence of working, you stick with them," said Channel 3 news director Cecil Tuck, explaining the move, which will pair Scoutten with Eyewitness News co-anchor Phil Allen. "Ray and Dave, each individually, have given us respectable ratings. That's why they were brought here in the beginning," said Tuck.

"In order to become No. 1, we have to build, to add to what they've already brought us. The audience research shows that if we want to progress past the point where we are now, we have to add additional strengths." Ans how important an ingredient are the news anchors in the popularity of a TV newscast? "No more important than pitchers are to a baseball team's success: somewhere between two-thirds and three-quarters," said Tuck. Tuck has been managing the Eyewitness News team for 13 months, but the, squad hasn't been able to beat Action News on KPNX-TV or KOOL News 10 totKOOL-TV in theratings. So, after watching his pitchers' performances and studying research data from the TV consulting firm of Frank N.

Associates, Tuck decided to (change the rotation. a Tuck explained that 10 different anchor combinations were researched tentatively titled 'Ray Thompson's said Tuck. Thompson said the segment "can, be anything I want it to be sometimes serious, sometimes humorous sort of a column of the air." Tuck and Thompson have been talking for several months about establishing the feature, which will begin this fall. The reduction in anchor work did not shock Thompson. "The nature of the business is change.

Young people are the image today, at least what consultants want," he think it's inevitable that a person Can't anchor forever." Thompson admitted that he "really had lost enthusiasm" for anchoring. "Certainly I have some natural feelings (of loss) a break in the routine." But, he said, "I actively look forward to this. Fortunately, it didn't come as a surprise." Nichols' assignment will be the "Nichols' Worth of News" closing segment "I would like it to be more of the nitty-gritty issues facing the viewers," Tuck said. "Since he will not be it will free Dave to be as controversial or provocative as he chooses to be. If -he could come up with two a day, I'd love it.

I'll leave that up to him how much he can produce each day." Tuck added that "Nichols' Worth" will be done both live and on videotape. Nichols could not be reached Sunday afternoon for comment Tuck said he is taking a two-week vacation and that "Nichols Worth" will be seen upon bis return. The pairing of Allen and Scoutten should result in a charismatic news team a quality coveted by news directors because it attracts viewers and improves ratings. "So much of it does hinge on personal-, ity. It does mean you have an element of chemistry and charisma.

Those are all intangibles," said Tuck. "It shouldn't be that way. I wish it weren't that way." CD Uve Now QD VrHa Alegre Bewitched QD 6) Quiereme Siempre 3:00 Wonder Woman Scooby Doe against the competition Bill Close and Mary Jo West on Channel 10 and Linda Alvarez and Kent Dana on Channel 12. "Our present anchor lineup tested well a respectible third," he said. However, the duo of Allen and Scoutten elicited "a total favorable rating of 91 percent It tied them with Alvarez and Dana." Allen has been co-anchor on the two newscasts since last year, when Tuck promoted him from weekends.

Thompson and Nichols have been anchoring at Channel 3 since 1977. Thompson moved to the ABC affiliate after 17 years anchoring at NBC affiliate KPNX-TV (then known as KTAR-TV); Nichols came from KOOL-TV after being anchor for more than 12 years at the CBS station. Scoutten is, a relative newcomer. He moved here from Hawaii in September as co-host with Coleen Cook of the now-defunct 11 AM. news program.

Allen, who also once worked at KOOL-TV, weathered the shuffle without problem. He is considered the star anchor and has been named solo anchor of a new 5 p.m. weekday newscast that Channel 3 plans to start in October. Tuck downplayed the angle of the old guard being dumped. "We're not making an effort to move anybody out.

Scoutten just came on so strong it was impossible to keep him out of a main anchor slot," he said. Although Thompson will read national news and offer his "And Finally closing trademark on the 6 p.m. newcast, his prime responsibility will be' feature reports from the field.
