Heavy thunderstorms swept over the upper Midwest from South Dakota to Michigan on' Monday, dropping softball -size hail and scattering tornadoes that left one man injured. Lightning killed two Arkansas prison inmates on a work detail. Turner County, S.D., authorities reported tornadoes touched down near Viborg, destroying farm property, one house and injuring a farmer whose tractor flipped in a tornado.

Sheriffs in the southeastern South Dakota county said a twister destroyed a house and some farm buildings. Two inmates were killed Monday afternoon and four others and a guard were injured by lightning that struck in a okra field where the men were working, said a prison spokesman at Cummins Unit, Ark. Softball-size hail. was reported at Centerville, S.D. Thunderstorms packing high winds in northern Wisconsin blew down barns, dropped trees and tipped over a trailer, according to John Nelson, Colby-Abbotsford police chief.

Downed trees blocked many roads in Abbotsford, where Nelson said the damage seemed to be the worst, and residents were using chain saws to clear them. At least two tornadoes were reported in Wisconsin. But Robert Ward, Polk County Director of Emergency Government, said damage was slight. Elsewhere, the Atlantic hurricane season's third tropical storm, Cindy, was born Monday after a low-pressure system south of Nova Scotia intensified, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Fla. The highest sustained winds in the storm were estimated at 55 mph, but Cindy will pose no threat to land areas for at least 24 hours.

The number of deaths may continue to rise, a Red Cross official, Dr. Carlos Galvan said. He said many of the poisoned people may suffer from lifelong mental and nervous disabilities.

"Unfortunately, there is the possiblity that the persons exposed longest to the fumes will suffer from permanent mental and nervous disorders," he said.
