Under the previous ownership of the Grand Canyon Television Channel 2 had been operating adequately in cramped quarters at 528 W. Aspen St But management realized it would take additional funds to improve equipment and programming.

Grand Canyon opted to sell the station for $1.4 million. The sale papers were signed Feb. 24 and, with Federal Communications Commission approval, KOAI-TV became KNAZ-TV. The call-letter switch marked the first major change. Since then, overall staff size has been increased about 25 percent, especially in the news department, and the amount of news programming has expanded.

Other changes are coming. "We are in the process of installing a new General Manager Dan Modisett said this week. "By the end of December, we will have a new building." Capitol Broadcasting, a Mississippi-based chain, will spend $3 million for improvements. "That's a lot of but we feel strongly about the market," Modisett said. The station's new transmitter will be operating within three weeks, Mof isett said.

The transmitter is a model, compared to the 11-year-old original unit that "is not really running very efficiently," he said. The benefit will be twofold: The coverage area of KNAZ-TV will grow by 25 percent to a 90-mile radius; and current viewers will receive better reception. The new building, located on a two-acre plot in the Rickey Industrial Park in east Flagstaff, contains 35,000 square feet A addition is being built to house studios and control room championship fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns from their homes. ON TV General Manager Rich Whitman reports the local subscription television company will pay "six figures" for exclusive Valley telecast rights to the bout, which will be staged at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nev. Subscribers will be charged $15 to see the scheduled 15-round fight live at 6 p.m.

"We didn't have a choice," Whitman said when asked about the $15 tab. "That price was dictated to lis by the promoter. They told us, 'That's what you're going to The fight is being promoted by Main Event Productions. Ticket prices for seats at the arena will be $500 The telecast marks the first time ON TV has presented a home pay-per-view sports event here. However, based on subscriber reaction to fights between Leonard and Roberto Duran carried in June and November of 1980 by ON TV in Los Angeles, Whitman is optimistic that it will be well received.

"I think we will have 15,000 to 20,000 subscribers watching the fight," Whitman predicted, declining to specify the number 'of customers necessary for ON TV to break even. Whitman said 125,000 out of a subscriber base of 250,000 in Los Angeles paid for the first Leonard-Duran fight In NovemberSvith the subcriber level up to 325,000, between 180,000 and 200,000 tuned in the rematch, he said. TELEVISION TONIGHT The "new federalism" and block grants to states will be discussed on The Report at 6:30 p.m. tonight on Channel 8, with the reactions of Arizona politicans being the focal point Gov. Bruce Babbitt and Phoenix Mayor Margaret Hance will be the guests via a satellite interconnect The interview will be conducted live at 4 p.m.

(Arizona time) for East Coast viewers, with Babbitt and Mrs. Hance being seen from a Channel 8 studio. just been ignored. We're finding there's a lot of news out there," said Wilson, who KULR- joint TVi lined in Channel 2 in March from Billings, Mont "I didn't care for Billings at all," he said. "It was a step down in market and a step up in responsibility." Programming alterations have been minimal so far "because we inherited contracts of prior ownership," Modisett said.

Hour Magazine was added at 4:30 p.m. weekdays in March, following The Mike Douglas Show. However, Modisett said, "We're going to dump Douglas (in September)." More major programming alterations will come as contracts expire. electronic apparatus. On-air improvements have been implemented.
