WKl nRn rrS nn vr 11 Iff i v. CROSSING: This photograph of geese at Hill End was taken by Kerrie Mcujgunn forestvme, wno wins $3 for it. 0 There's more to taking a photograph than $lmply pointing a camera in the general direction of tome famous landmark and pressing a button. For a start, some of you need to learn how to hold your camera. Hold it straight unless you're deliberately slanting it for some sort of special effect; and hold it still.

Make sure that the camera doesn't move as you press the shutter button. Many of you spoiled your entries in our photography competition by moving the camera. But of course, keeping the camera still isn't the only thing you have to watch. Decide what you want to photograph. For in-stanqe: suppose you've gone to Sydney's Circular Quay with a friend and a camera.

Do you want to photograph the Opera House, the other buildings, the ships, the wharves, or your friend? You may be able to fit all of them into one photograph, but you're more likely to take a good picture if you decide which is the main subject. Do you want a picture of the Opera House with your friend looking at it, or a picture of your friend with the Opera House in the background? Having decided on your main subject, you, next have to find the best way to photograph it. How far away should you stand? Bear in mind that many cameras make things look further away than you ex-pect. Do any unwanted shadows fall across the subject? They'll show up in the photo. Of cpurse, if you're taking an action shot, you haven't time to think about things like these but you may be able to think about them before the action begins.

You want to photograph your friend trying out his new skates? Choose a spot where you can photograph him in a good light, with an uncluttered background; have the camera ready, watch the view finder as your friend comes down the hill; and you're ready to click that shutter at just the right moment! We publish two prize-winning entries today.
