He allows himself some commentary, and a few glimpses of strange private nightmares. Otherwise, much of it is like a cool, economical documentary. Yet gradually, like on an ocean cruise, the whole outfit, crew and actors, become real people and their personal lives begin to surface. Witty, ironic, tragic, and wonderfully natural, this is a snatch of unmistakably true experience from a master who knows the film world in depth.

Many must have rejoiced that this light-hearted piece of snappy entertainment, minus sex, profanity and gore, came out on top of this year's Academy Award winners. It's a film of superb style, using one of the American legends not the Wild West drama or the New York comedy, but the pre-war Chicago underworld one to provide tough thrills with a comic edge to them. The opening sequence establishes the mood; it follows a pair of feet striding along in the two-tone footgear of the period, known as co-respondent shoes.

'Serpico' HERE is a brilliant close-up of a corrupt police force in decadent New York. Out to reform them both is a lone honest cop. Allowing for the fact that a really crooked police force would not allow a man like Frank Serpico (Al Pacino) to live very long, "Serpico" is a tough, realistic It is the story of one man's obsession with truth and the audience is with him all the way. The background of sleazy New York with its shadowy racketeers, thugs and drugs is reported with what appears to be ruthless honesty. Serpico's courage and bitter disappointments build up to a showdown in which, finally, he is vindicated.

But the price he pays is heavy and right to the it looks as though he will never make it. The talk is dirty and brutal through but that's the way it is almost everywhere these days. (M. Francois Truffaut, the director, is the central actor in this film, which is about the making of a film. It's a subject which probably every director would like to try; Fellim, principal actors are Ben Murphy (co-star of the Alias Smith and Jones television series), who has the lead role, and Peter Graves.

The only other key on-camera men from the States are veteran stunt-man Everett Creach and his three-man stunt team. Overseeing the project, as director, is Earl Bellamy, who was involved with such series as I Spy, and Name Of The Game. By contrast, there are about a dozen Australian principals, including John Meillon. Vicki Raymond and a bevy of other well known local screen personalities. It's no art film, but "Sidecar Boys" will have a lot of exciting action footage from sidecar motor-cycle racing at Amaroo Park.
