THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC R1 WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2012 C5 LHP TYLER SKAGGS (0-0, 0.00) RHP JACOB TURNER (1-1, 8.03) LHP WADE MILEY (13-8, 2.96) LHP WADE LEBLANC (2-2, 2.50) mm rep Game 1 LHP Tyler Skaggs vs. RHP Jacob Turner Skaggs, 21, will be making his major league debut for the Diamondbacks. Acquired two years ago from the Angels in the Dan Haren trade, Skaggs was 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA in nine starts for Triple-A Reno. He began the season at Dou-ble-A Mobile, where he went 5-4 with a 2.84 ERA in 13 starts. He has excellent command and a dominating curve-ball.

Turner will be making his debut for the Marlins upon being recalled from Triple-A New Orleans. Acquired from the Tigers on July 23, he was 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in five starts for the Zephyrs. He made three starts for Detroit this season. He was 1-1 with an 8.03 ERA overall for the Tigers. Game 2 Wade Miley vs.

LHP Wade LeBlanc Miley is 1-2 with a 2.76 ERA in his past three starts with three walks and 19 total strikeouts. The All-Star hasn't allowed a home run in six of his last seven starts. He beat the Marlins on April 29, allowing one run in 6 13 innings. LeBlanc is coming off a 6-5 win at Coors Field in which he allowed threeruns on seven hits in 5 13 (cq) innings. Projected starting pitchers for the next three games: Thursday: Off.

The Diamondbacks jumped outtoa 5-0 lead in first inning but couldn't hold on, dropping second straight game at home to Miami. Upton injury: Justin Upton played just one inning Tuesday, driving in two runs on a single to left in his only plate appearance. He was replaced by Gerardo Parra in the top of the second because of tightness in his left hamstring. He is listed as day to day.

Cahill's outing: Cahill got into trouble several times Tuesday but managed to strand runners on second and third in the second, a runner on third in the third and runners on second and third in the fourth inning. He struck out six, including Gian-carlo Stanton twice. Stanton had crushed two home runs against Arizona on Monday. It was Cahill's second straight no-decision. "We had a five-run lead; he threw 34 pitches in the second inning, walked the leadoff guy and gave up two runs," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said.

"He struggled the whole time. He didn't shut them down and get deeper, and it hurt us." Big first inning: The Diamondbacks were on the wrong side of a big inning Monday, giving up nine runs in the fourth to the Marlins. On Tuesday the Diamondbacks scored five runs in the first inning. Aaron Hill's double to left began the onslaught, driving home leadoff man Chris Young, who was walked. Upton hit a two-run single to left, scoring Hill and Jason Kubel.

Miguel Montero followed with an RBI single to score Paul Goldschmidt, who walked prior to Upton. Ryan Wheeler provided the final run on a sacrifice fly to center. Tariq Lee View from the pressbox: According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, the Diamondbacks have placed lefty Joe Saunders on trade waivers. We'll know soon enough if he's about to join Stephen Drew out the door, but despite his last start, which wasn't pretty, this team could still use him as it fights for a playoff spot. If Tyler Skaggs shines in his debut today, though, you can probably color Saunders gone.

Bob McManaman Joyce quick to perform CPR Umpire helps save employee's life By Tariq Lee azcentral sports Monday proved to be another close-call situation for umpire Jim Joyce. Some may recall Joyce from his blown call in 2010 that cost former Diamondbacks pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game when he was with the Detroit Tigers, but this was a different kind of pressure situation. While walking down the hallway Monday night in a tunnel leading to the opponent's dugout on the field level of Chase Field, Joyce witnessed a woman unconscious on the ground. He immediately assisted the woman, Diamondbacks employee Jayne Powers, who has been with the Diamondbacks since the team's first game in 1998. "Everything started at 5:15 yesterday.

I had just got back to my office and put my radio down," said Russ Amaral, the team's vice president of ballpark operations. "I heard a vague call come through, and it was much different. I bolted down the hall; my office is in right field. By the time I had got there, (paramedics) had relieved Jim Joyce and (Miami) Marlins bullpen catcher, who was assisting." Marlins bullpen catcher Jeff Urgelles was throwing batting practice when he heard a call from a trainer. Urgelles earned his paramedics license in 2007 shortly after retiring from professional baseball.

"One of our players screamed at me, 'Urge! Urge! somebody needs CPR," Urgelles said. "So I ran down the hallway and I saw the lady was down. When I got there two people were already talking to her. One guy giving compressions and another guy assisting. And the guy giving compressions was Jim Joyce; I was telling him to keep giving good compressions." Joyce's attempts to revive the woman weren't getting a response, but the paramedics used an automatic external defibrillator (AED) four times before transporting her to Good Samaritan Hospital.

The ordeal lasted until 5:40, but Amaral said it felt like two hours. Powers is now in stable condition and a pacemaker was placed in her heart this morning. If all goes well, she will be released later this week. "The doctors at Good Sam said if somebody wasn't that close with the combination of AED they're not sure if the story would have been different last night," Amaral said. Joyce could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson didn't hear about the incident until the question was asked to him prior to Tuesday night's game against the Miami Marlins. "That's phenomenal; he went out and umpired a game and we were yelling at him," Gibson said with a laugh. "We don't get on them too bad. That's outstanding." Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen saw the woman unconscious as she was about 15 steps away from the visiting manager's office Monday and called Joyce a great man but not just for helping to save Powers' life. "I've known him for a long time.

I think he might have a stronger mind than me," Guillen said. "I may start running; I'm pretty weak in that situation. But what he did shows you what kind of (person) he is. "God put you there for a reason. In that particular time, God put Jim there to save that woman's life.

It could have been somebody else, but the right people were there. Me I run away and say something happened down there. I'm not good with stuff like that." Miami Bonifacio cf a-G. Playing that many games in a row is against the rules in Major League Baseball's collectivebar-gaining agreement with the players union, but the snafu originally went unnoticed. So, after the split dou-bleheader, the Diamondbacks now will get a day off on Thursday. "I'm all for that," left fielder Jason Kubel said. "But, hey, doubleheaders are cool.

It should be a lot of fun." There figures to be some added intrigue in Game 1, as the Diamondbacks have promoted left-handed pitching prospect Tyler Skaggs from Triple-A Reno and will let him make his major-league debut. Skaggs got the call over right-hander Trevor Bauer, Arizona's other top young arm, who had mixed results in four starts for the Diamondbacks earlier this summer. "Tyler's got a great head on his shoulders, and it's going to be fun to watch him," said relief pitcher Sam Demel, who was recalled from Reno on Tuesday. "You never can tell until you get here and do it, but he's going to be jacked up and he's going to be ready to go." Skaggs is 6 foot 3, athletic and has electric stuff in his pitching arsenal. It features a killer curveball that bends hard and can be very deceptive.

"He's just kind of put it all together," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "He can throw any pitch at any time, he's pretty efficient, he's not afraid to let them put the ball in play and yet he's got strikeout stuff." This will be just the seventh doubleheader ever played in a domed or retractable-roof stadium since 2000. Hall can't be certain how many fans it will attract, but he's projecting crowds of at least 17,000 for the first game and somewhere around 20,000 for the nightcap. Left-hander Wade Miley will start Game 2 against the Marlins and said he's looking forward to being a part of history. "It's exciting to be a part of that, the first one ever here," he said.

"Hopefully, I can go out and pitch well."
