Associated KARZ radio ended nearly four months of speculation Monday by announcing that it will drop its contemporary music format this weekend and switch to playing country tunes, joining four other local stations. Station manager Del Hull explained that the actual decision to jump on the country bandwagon was made in October before the last radio rating period. The ratings later confirmed earlier indications that KARZ's audience was eroding. The station dropped from 12th place to 19th among Valley stations.

"We're going to sell ourselves as a new kind of country," Hull said, noting that he wants "to really define ourselves in the market" with the new format. "We will be a contemporary country station. We're going to take the best from KOY and the best from KNIX." One of KARZ's problems in the past, besides having a helter-skelter approach to music, has been confusion over its call letters. Carving out an identity has been hard, and listeners have referred to it as both "cares" and "cars." With its new format, which will be unveiled Sunday, KARZ will adopt the nickname "K-960," the 960 signifying the station's location on the AM band. K-960 will be battling country giant KNIX-FM, the market's top-rated station, as well as KNIX, KJJJ and KC-92, an FM outlet that has recently evolved from an early "wide open" approach to music to strictly playing the hits.

Reaction to Hull's announcement by competitors was varied. "It's the dumbest (bleepin') move they could make," said Gary Fries, general manager of KJJJ and KC-92. "I can't imagine they'd see that there's that much room on the country band." Fries, though, said he welcomes the competition. "It will just make us and KNIX do a better job," he said. Larry Daniels, program director of KNIX and KNIX-FM, also questioned whether the market can support five country stations.

And he predicted the race for the country audience "will make it tough on the bottom station on the ladder. One of those stations will drop out of the country race at some point."
