INK in my VEINS '•!*•" V "•' • V'?' 4 Helrners, Solory 165.20 f Loshbtook. Soli-ry ... 47.79 Sulory i33.7! •y MARIAN INMAN faxes form a popular topic of discussion when people get together. The pro and con of the fairness of increased state cigarette, liquor, and state income tax wax high and mighty at times but the tax is here to stay, it seems. One news commentator broaching this subject in his news broadcast said that Californians could truly brag that they belong to the golden state. Ntxt in lint) of recent eonv.rwflon it the vi.it of the former Grace Kelly, the Princeit of Monaco, to Hollywood, It she coming back to movie making? Do they need the money? Just what it the scoop only those in the know have the true story and to far do not tell. They go on entertaining her and her family and the papert at leatt ttar the little Princett Stephanie at a little movie ham. Tonight, there is the sad story of two little girls lured from their home and found murdered after an all night search, by friends and neighbors. The company for whom the young father works have cancelled" the firm's annual picnic and is using the money usually spent for this celebration to start a memorial scholarship in honor of these children. So far there are no details concerning the scholarship published other than its origin. Also so far authorities have found no clues to the apprehension of the person or persons guilty of the crime. Mothers of the little girls' playmates are afraid to let their children out of doors and so the search goes on. Giving of onetelf and one't time and talentt it richly rewarding we know. Giving in a volunteer capacity with no thought of reward. In all communitiet the tervicet of thete people goet untung and that it the way they want it. This week the Torrance, South Bay Volunteer Bureau is advertising for more volunteers. Organized less than four years ago this agency handles volunteer referrals for 50 agencies in the area eligible for services. From March 1, 1966 to April 1, 1967, more than 300 volunteer placements were handled by the Bureau, representing 8,000 hours of service. The Volunteer Bureau benefitt the community by providing profetsional ttaff in agenciet with "free" help relieving the ttaff of time-contuming but ettential detail enabling them to stretch their training farther. Newcomert are provided with a "one-ttop" information center where they may chrote mott suitable or favorite volunteer activity and learn of community needs and problems. The Bureau also provides retired men and women with new interests, showing them needs towards which they may contribute. From experience I know how valuable this is to the retired person to remain useful and lead a more rewarding life. The Board of Directors of the Volunteer Bureau it comprised of citizens from each area terved, who are aware of the special needs of their particular areas. The Bureau feelt that this recruitment, pro-screening and referral tervice helpt smaller and less publicized organizations, as well as the better known. In addition to providing regular clerical help, volunteers from the bureau drive patients to hospitals and clinics; aid the handicapped by reading, writing and shopping for them; work in child guidance canters and in schools, etc. They also care for small children while mothers take improvement" courtet at schools and health centers; tutor ditadvantaged and slow readers in elementary tchools; aid professional social case workers as friendly visitors; and interpret in hospitals and clinics. In our community we have a wealth of volunteer workers and I feel sure many hours of work to their credit even though we do not have an organized Bureau for recruiting workers. Here where the area is large and the need great this organized Bureau serves a wonderful service They are *K g * £ r volunte2rs and invite people to register with them so that they can fill the many requests for volunteer help So now is the time for us in our smaller community to seek out where help is needed and offer some of our released time so we may help our brother in need and also add fulfillment to our own lives. j •. J WLe , went to Fi » h «'-'"«n'« Wharf at Rodondo rh^u " blae * bM$ dinner •» Ton V'«- Thb and clam chowder are among his specialties. The evening was cool, downright ch.lly on the water, but we wore light sweaters! After dinner we toured the little shops that line the wharf and then to home and our comfortable beds. I am having such a nice time but I'll soon be coming home to settle down and continue my volunteer work with time for my writing, my fancy eggs and reading. w 7 Be seeing you. 4—Algona (Iowa) Advance) MONDAY, AUG. 21, 1967 COUNCIL MINUTIf The City Council met In regular session with Mayor Finn and the following council members present: Andreasen, Elbert, Cook, Miller 1 Peircc.
