Friday, July 27, 1990 45 The Sydney Morning Herald Sport Punters pip purists as kie roar industry's power source BASKETBALL HEATHER SMITH MAX PRESNELL milimmil jjjaigg m.mmtmuummmmmmmmmmmmwmmmmmmmm mill MlSV rtixltft BSSSi Sydney Kings rookie Tony de Ambrosis believes he will not be under extra pressure to perform well in the crucial National Basketball League match against Illawarra at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, tonight. The budding forward says that as the rookie of the team he doesn't want to make any mistakes and, therefore, tonight's game will be no different from any other night De Ambrosis is the sole bench back-up for big men Brad Dalton, Mark Dalton and Marc Ridlen, who, together with guards Steve Carfino and Ian Robilliard, are members of the re-shuffled starting five. The absence of Andrew Sval-denis, who had to fly home to Lithuania late last week, and the Boomers' Damian Keogh and Tim Morrissey on representative duty, has thrown the Kings line-up into semi-chaos. It could not have conte at a worse time, for Sydney are desperate to beat Illawarra and improve their play-off chances. The Kings are eighth on the NBL ladder and a victory over the Hawks would move them to within one win of the top six.

If Illawarra lose to both the Kings and the Gold Coast tomorrow night, the Sydneysiders could leap-frog to sixth place. A loss tonight, however, would probably end the 1990 premiership hopes for the Kings. De Ambrosis, 19, is aware of his important role and is keen to repay Kings coach Bob Turner's confidence in him. "They the Illawarra players are not going to respect me so I'm going to take it to them," he said. I usually feel a bit of pressure when I go on because I'm the rookie and I don't want to go anything that's going to hurt the team's chances.

It'll be just the same tonight, but I'm going to get a lot more court-time than I usually do. "I'm going to be concentrating on my defence and carrying put the game plan." De Ambrosis played well last national betting turnover exceeds that for normal Saturday race meetings." Without punting, horse racing would still exist with the popularity of polo. Owners would be racing for side-wagers. And as far as the Melbourne Cup is concerned, the big turnover is hardly due to the quality of runner, more to the stimulation of the gamble. The Cox Plate these days caters for much better types than the Melbourne Cup but doesnt have the gambling appeal.

I admire the horse in both literature and flesh. I'd back a horse with a "touch of Timor pony, three parts thoroughbred at least" against the Byerley Turk, highly commended by Schreck. Perhaps the old Arabian war horse would have had an edge on the flat, but I don't know how he would have handled "Kosciusko's side, where the hills are twice as steep and twice as In William Hill's territory, Great Britain, the horse comes first and racing is still a sport. It hardly compares to the "industry" here Admittedly, the horse's magnify cence is often held to ridicule because of the people around them. Take Prince Darius.

"Prince Darius," Schreck said, "was taking part in a horse contest that was to decide who, among the eminent princes, was to fill the vacant throne of the King of Persia The throne was to go to the first horse that neighed at sunrise the next morning. Prince Darius won the contest and the throne when his stallion gave a mighty neigh at the very moment the sun appeared "It was discovered that his groom had, at the psychological moment when the sun appeared, placed beneath the horse's nostrils a hand which he had, in cunning premeditation, rubbed on the genitals of a mare in season." Fortunately for favourite backers, all the stewards had been beheaded for being too engrossed in the horse and not the punt before the so no objection could be lodged. Even Prince Darius was the subject of a rort. Not the horse that bad little luck with Tulloch in the 1950s, but the owner in ancient times. Undoubtedly, AJC chief steward John Schreck would have upheld the protest in which old Prince Darius was involved.

Prince Darius received a mention in a recent discourse "The Horse, not betting, is the life blood of racing" from Schreck at the Asian Racing Conference in Turkey. Schreck is worried by a statement from William Hill, the well-known British bookmaker, who, as far as I am concerned, is on the right track. Hill said betting was "the life-blood of the racing industry and I believe the future of horse racing and British bloodstock depends entirely on the patronage of the punters, the paying customers at the turnstiles. Whether it is a good thing or not, the majority of people go racing, not because of their love of horseflesh, not because it is the Sport Of Kings, but because they want to At the conference, Schreck was anxious to refute this: "Historically," he said, "there has always been a close relationship between man and his horse. They have worked together in the fields.

They have made war together, they have been companions at home, at sport, at leisure. Almost everybody loves the noble horse." Certainly not when he's carried your last and been downed. Sure, in the old days, before the "horseless" carriage, he was man's best friend, but now more people bet on horses than ride them. Schreck went on: "Even the non-horseman punter becomes, in addition to his momentary support, a vicarious horse-owner, at least for the period of the race. And you seldom hear him blaming the horse for its defeat it is almost always the jockey, the trainer, the race starter or the poor old stewards." I say the horse which doesn't run up to expectations is the subject of Wednesday week in the promotional match against the Australian team and said he had gained confidence since then.

"I was pretty relaxed because it wasn't a game that we had to win, but I know the circumstances will be different against Illawarra," he said. In Seattle, Australia lost their third game on the trot in the Goodwill Games yesterday, but coach Adrian Hurley was still smiling. The Boomers mentor said he was looking ahead to the world championship in Argentina. "I'm not really disappointed. Brazil's form has been strong in this tournament and they are ranked fifth in the world," said Hurley after the Boomers had lost 101-94 to the South Americans.

"I'm quite pleased with the result. We lost to Yugoslavia, ranked No 2, by about 18 points and I'm far more happy with the way we played this game. We are finally getting on track." Brazil finished the qualifying rounds undefeated and will play the United States in the semifinals. The Brazilians were led superbly by Oscar Schmidt, who hit a Goodwill Games record 42 points, while Melbourne Tigers ace Andrew Gaze kept Australia close with 28 points after he had scored 34 against Spain. "We play Brazil in our pool in Argentina," Hurley "Without the experience we have got here we would be a lot further behind at the world championship.

"We have to be confident we will do better every game." The United States overwhelmed Italy 1 13-76 and Yugoslavia beat Spain 81-67 to join the Soviet Union and Brazil in the final four. Australia will play Italy. the odd expletive. But Schreck bases most of his opinion of the horse on history: "I would love to go on romancing about the importance of the noble horse to the horsemen like Napoleon, Ben-Hur, Paul Revere and so on, and even about the horses without which good news could never have carried from Ghent to Aix. I would like to talk about the importance of the horse lost by Richard III, of whom Shakespeare had proclaimed: A horse, my kingdom for a horse' But then Richard III never saw a Harley Davidson, and I'm sure Napoleon would have preferred a Sherman tank.

of course, we must not forget the owner, who provides the money that is needed for maintaining the health of the horse and its training and presentation on the racetrack in a proper condition," Schreck maintained. Doesn't the punter subsidise this? Perhaps not with a slow horse that can't win prize money, but definitely he provides the incentives. so now let me remind you that this is the Chinese Year of the Horse," said Schreck. "Therefore it is timely that I make this declaration for the maintenance of the view that it is Horse and not betting that is the lifeblood of racing. "Even the providers of the betting facilities will agree that public pride in the higher-class horses engenders a significantly higher level of betting support.

For example, for one race alone in Australia, the Melbourne Cup which is held in November, the Australia's Phil Smyth dives for the ball as Maury Souza charges down the court during Brazil's 101-94 win in the Goodwill Games in Seattle.
