Duke on conservation MORNING! Full Week's Progress HERALD NEW DRAMA SERIES ABOUT PRIVATE EYE III wiw An exclusive study of the Duke of Edinburgh is ABN 2's Chequerboard this week. The documentary, filmed during an Australian tour earlier this year, screens tomorrow at 8.35 pm. The Duke visited Australia in his capacity as president of the Australian Conservation Foundation. The Chequerboard film is an engrossing record of the Duke's trip and his reactions to the conservation issues he was confronted with. He spoke frankly about numerous topical matters.

Some of his comments: On conservation: "You talk to one person about conservation and he's talking about preventing somebody develop in front of him building a factory that interferes with his view. You talk to somebody else about conservation and he is devoted to saving some unique species. This is whv the issue has become so fiercely competitive." On population control: "The population should be limited. There's no question about it because in the end there isn't going to be enough room. It stands to reason." On pollution: "The polluter doesn't pay.

the con- "iJ yV" jZ fir 'SHOWBOAT' IS Rod in role as Ryan English-born Rod Mullinar has played it all from a James Bond movie to theatre productions in London's West End. Now he is the star of ATN 7's new drama series Ryan, screening each Sunday at 7.30 pm. As Michael Ryan, Mullinar plays a former policeman, now a private investigator and a man who likes to do things bis own way. When there is a crime or a problem too delicate, too dangerous or too inflammable to involve the police. Ryan is available as long as the case satisfies his stringent code of ethics.

Ryan is quiet, attractive, likable and dangerous. Before venturing to Australia Rod Mullinar (who hails from Hereford), went to a co-educational "progressive" school. Both his parents, who still live in England, have been in show business: his father a musician, his mother a dancer. At 20. he decided to train as an actor and joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Versaiile actor Colin McEwaq portrays in Ryan a tough policeman- with an intense dislike for Michael Ryan.

McEwan, 32. was bom in Scotland, but has' been living in Australia 'since 1947. He 'joined the staff of ATV Channel 6 Melbourne in 1964 and played more than 300 characters in Magic Circle Club.
