Call 132 243. Scientist, International House founder, Lyceum Club president 21-7-1913-6-8-2000 She was widely honored and loved for her community work, spanning six decades, in the service of some of Melbourne's key institutions.

By JAMES KILPATRICK Mavis Jackson dedicated her energetic 87 years to Melbourne institutions and the people within them. She was born on July 27, 1913, in Masulapatam, India. Her father, Lieutenant (later Commander) Walter Swan, and her mother, Alice, spent a 30-year career with the Royal Navy in British India. She and her brother were sent to boarding school in Melbourne, in her case to Methodist Ladies' College, Kew. She enjoyed MLC, and during 1931 enrolled in science at the University of Melbourne.

Here she made lifelong friends and expanded her networks, beginning a 60-year involvement with the university. During this time she also joined Lyceum Club (Melbourne) and began a 60-year contribution. Her interest was always in the workings of institutions, particularly working out who fitted in where, and then motivating the right people to get things done. Jackson graduated in 1935 and began a career in I R. E.

G. "Pat" Russell Judge and advocate in East Africa 10-9-1904-28-9-2000 microbiology. With the outbreak of war in 1939 she joined a Volunteer Aid Detachment, working as a microbiologist. During this time she met and, in 1942, married Alan Vaughan Jackson, at that time a pathologist in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps and later chairman of pathology services at the Alfred Hospital. While she officially left the workforce after marrying, st she had already established a reputation for getting involved.

In 1950 she was invited to join the planning committee for International House, which was to become the college for both Australian and international students at Melbourne University. Lyndal Pascoe, who was involved in fund-raising, was "happily sucked along in the slipstream of her enthusiasm" for International House, and loved people and who drew remembers "someone who them into her causes through the force of her personality and her genuine enthusiasm. She had a talent for organising and always gave 110 per cent." Here she developed a reputation as a catalyst, particularly for fundraising. In the 1960s, at a time of life when some people might have thought of slowing R. E.

G. "Pat" Russell, who has died aged 96, was a High Court judge in Uganda from 1965 until 1975 and in 1970 presided at the inquiry into the curious affair of the British diplomat Brian Lea. Russell had moved to Uganda shortly after the war to set up his own legal practice. After his appointment to the bench, he conducted several judicial inquiries. None aroused as much interest as that into the case of Lea, who had fallen in with a plan fake his own abduction to draw attention to the plight of Ugandan Asians who held British passports but were unable to obtain entry to Britain.

Russell later held an inquiry into President Milton Obote's arrest and detention of five of his ministers in 1966. The hearing was held in camera and Russell's findings were never revealed; the former ministers remained in detention until 1971 when Obote was overthrown by his army commander, Idi Amin. In 1973, Russell was in his chambers in the High Court in Kampala when Uganda's Chief Justice was taken by Amin's soldiers from the adjoining room and murdered. This experience perhaps influenced Russell in his decision to decline Amin's invitation to stay longer in Uganda. Instead, he moved to Kenya, where he practised as an advocate until he was 91.

Robert Ernest Gordon Russell was born in Dublin in 1904 and went to Imperial Services College where he excelled at cricket and boxing. I Derek William (Bill) Griffiths A generous man with a big heart, a fine mind and a quick wit, Bill Griffiths was a pioneer in his field and active in many charity functions, events, children's outings and telethons. Born in Malvern, Griffiths was the eldest of three sons to parents Barbara and Herbert. Educated at Melbourne High, he joined Glazebrooks Paints and completed his diploma of science at Melbourne Technical College. He spent two years in England with the company, where he furthered his studies in the field of paint.

As technical director of the company, he kept Glazebrooks at the cutting edge of technological advances and introduced many innovative products, including Tanox House paint with no white lead. In 1959, Griffiths started his own business, National Paint Products Pty Ltd. With factories in five states and several overseas licences, his company flourished. He sold the company to Wattyl in 1976 and in 1981 he started Evergard Industries. With 65 years of experience in paint, Griffiths down, she got busier.

In 1962 she returned to her scientific background by establishing the cytology unit at the AlfredHospital. She continued as head of this unit until 1977. She served as a member of the board of management of the Yooralla Children's Hospital, School, 1954-60, of the National Council of Women 1957-60, and of the executive, Anti-cancer Council of Victoria, 1967-84. In 1966 she served as president, Victorian Society of Cytology. In 1967 she was created a member of the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of her community service work.

She was twice a member of the general committee of the Lyceum Club and in 1973-75 served as president. During the 1980s, honorary life membership of the Lyceum Club was conferred on her and she was honored during one of the club's "living treasures'. From 1973-79 Mavis Jackson was chair of council of International House. In 1977 she was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal, also for community service. Throughout all of this Mavis Jackson remained an dedicated wife and mother and, in later years, a confessed "biased Tribal in her loyalties, she always spoke of "the "the "the and "the She always asserted her place within the group, and this usually developed into a leadership role.

He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in the 1 British military administration in Ethiopia and charged with establishing a judicial system.

Medieval conditions and limited resources made this a formidable task.
