Even though he is earning poor money, he knows the big bucks will be there when at least, if he gets the call to play at the "Big Show" with the Orioles. Money does not motivate Byrne but he is not unaware of the big figures the top players pull Baltimore's Cal Ripken signed a five-year contract worth $32.5 million. "Really, I consider myself lucky sometimes because there are thousands who would love to be in the same position as me with a chance to play in the majors," he said. Even though it was not glamorous living out of a suitcase, eating hot dogs, pizza and hamburgers, it was worth it, says Queenslander Dave Nilsson, 22, who Is now the Milwaukee Brewers' second catcher in the majors. "The minors were tough, but I wouldn't trade it for the world now that I have made it," said Nilsson, who now makes $118,000 a season, the standard contract for the first year in the majors.

"I remember I always struggled for money in the minors and I got homesick a lot. "I started In the minors four years ago and I had to learn to live off $700 a month and $10 a day for meals when we were on the road. "You were always scrambling for everything you got. You just had to budget so much and you had to learn to eat junk food at the cheapest places. There were four of us living in a two-bedroom apartment, sometimes there were three of us sleeping in one room.

"At some stage during a season everyone in the minors wants to quit, but what keeps you going is the possibilities of what you can be doing In the years to come. "Sometimes I would lie in bed, wishing I was back in Brisbane having a big steak and salad. But what I went By PETER SIMUNOVICH, New York, Monday Clayton Byrne often lies in bed late at night dreaming about sunning himself and watching the waves crash on Perth's spacious Scarborough Beach. And sometimes he closes his eyes and asks himself: "What in the heck am I doing here?" Byrne, 20, has difficulties managing his finances. "It can be pretty brutal.

Sometimes I struggle to pay the bills, especially with long distance phone calls to my parents and girlfriend in Perth," he says. Byrne Is one of 19 Australians playing In American baseball's minor leagues. They have joined American teams after scouts recommended them as potential major league players. For six months of the year, Byrne, from the Perth suburb of Guildford, plays single A baseball in the minor leagues for the Baltimore Orioles. The right-handed left fielder makes only $1000 a month, plus $15 a day for meals when the team is on the road.

Life Is tough. Players travel by bus and eat dust in some pretty average baseball teams. "You learn to eat a lot of take-away food and you share a room with another player on the road. When we are not travelling I share a one-bedroom apartment with two American players," said Byrne, who is in his second season with the minor leagues. 'Two of us are in one bedroom and the third guy is in the living room, sleeping on a fold-out bed.

We learn to get along. Some other players In the minors have It a lot worse. "I have given up a quality lifestyle in Perth, but to play in the majors this has got to be done and it is a long road to get there." Byrne would not have life any other through doesn't bug me any more and I wouldn't trade those experiences for the world. Now we sit back and laugh about it." Mark Hutton, a right-handed pltcH-er with the New York Yankees in the AA league, is expected to be invited to the big dance, as they say here when a player gets the call, some time next season. Hutton, 22, from the Adelaide sub' urb of Westlakes, is in his fourth year, with the Yankees.

The right-handed-pitcher said he spent up to 60 hours a season In a bus travelling from one game to another. "When the season ends here I go back to Australia for about six months and work," he said. "Last year I did clinics, and once I worked as a laborer in the swimming pool industry." Darian Lindsay, 21, a left-handed pitcher from Sydney, was. approached by the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies before he signed to play with the Mets in the minor leagues. Lindsay impressed baseball scouts while pitching for the Australian junior Olympic team that beat the United States, Canada and China in a World Championship five years ago.

He Is now in his fourth year here, making $1200 a month. "You learn to live day-to-day," he said. "You don't plan anything for the future just In case you are called up to play at the next league." Lindsay plays 148 games a season and says that life on the road is noi something he would want to continue for the rest of his life. "There is one venue where tbe field Is always wet and soggy and the change rooms are so dirty you have to wear shower shoes as a protection against any infection," he said. Lindsay has not yet seen Shea Stadium, where the New York Mets play.

Nor has he yet seen them play live. o-i am, za-2-a. am im (ao ran lauum marea lz sopt 7-1 4m, 16-24. won (57) Deal 1200m CO 5 Sept 15-1 Sm, 264-7. 4Vii 4ft (52.5) Band 22O0m Cup 4 March 9-2 4m.
