Last Saturday, Dittman was expected to dominate the meeting and again prove his popularity with punters. But things did not go according to plan, and following bis only winning ride, on the Jack Denham-trained Whivory, he was jeered back to scale. His defeats on the well-fancied Lucyrowe, Semii Ah Moo, Social Path and Skating continued his horror run at Canterbury.

Dittman also looked like dominating the last time racing was held on a weekend at Canterbury, but bis narrow win on Naturalism in the Canterbury Cup was bis only joy on a day which saw him beaten on Bint Marscay, Dancing Dynamite, Sillusion and Navy Seal. Both meetings were marred by distinct track bias, with those racing on or near the inside at a clear disadvantage. Skating was showing no ill-effects yesterday from her last place in Saturday's Premiere Stakes at Canterbury, and her spring campaign will now depend on the weather in Sydney and Melbourne. If Melbourne's wet spell continues, the mare will stay in Sydney and be aimed at the $400,000 Epsom Handicap, at Randwick on October 2, but if the weather is fine in Melbourne she will head there for a Cox Plate campaign. The VATC will seek a meeting with the Victorian State Government this week to put forward a case in support of the Show Day public holiday in September.

Champion jockey Mick Dittman has three weeks to decide whether top filly Bint Marscay or outstanding galloper Naturalism is to be his top priority this spring. Initially, Naturalism was expected to resume in next Saturday's $201,000 Manikato Stakes, at Moonee Valley but his trainer, Lee Freedman, has decided to postpone the entire's resumption until the $100,000 Memsie Stakes, at Caul-field on September 4. Naturalism will then follow a path similar to last year's, towards the $1 million WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in October by taking in the $200,000 John Feehan Stakes, at the course on September 18 before the $200,000 Turnbull Stakes, at Flemington on October 2. Freedman has also pencilled in the Caulfield Stakes should he consider Naturalism needs another run before the Cox Plate, but this campaign has put Dittman in a position any jockey in Australia would envy. While the postponement of Naturalism's resumption has given Dittman more time to decide, the dates of the entire's other planned starts in Melbourne coincide with the campaign of Bint Marscay in Sydney, with Freedman looking at her becoming the first filly to collect the AJC-STC $200,000 "Princess Series" Bonus.

LONDON, Sunday: Mick Quinn grabbed a hat-trick -including two goals in three minutes after the break as Coventry shocked Arsenal 3-0 at Highbury yesterday, the first day of the English premier league season. Quinn's former club, Newcastle, could have done with his finishing at St James's Park, where England striker Teddy Sheringham gave Tottenham's Ossie Ardiles a dream managerial debut with the only goal in a 1-0 victory. Sheringham's England teammate, Nigel Clough, went one better, scoring both goals in his Liverpool debut to give his side a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield under the eye of national team boss Graham Taylor. Taylor also saw Wednesday's international midfielder, Carlton Palmer, receive the first red card of the new season for a nasty foul on Liverpool's Dane Jan Molby in the 12th minute. Manchester United open their defence of the title at Norwich City today.

Arsenal, winners of the A and League Cups last season, gave away a penalty when England defender Lee Dixon brought down Zimbabwe winger Peter Ndlovu, Quinn opening his account from the spot in the 34th minute. US international Roy Wegerle laid on two more for Quinn in the 62nd and 65th minutes, the first with a deft back heel. Clough, signed by Graeme Souness from relegated Nottingham Forest in June, did not disappoint the Liverpool fans. He scored from a tight angle in the 39th minute, and was on hand to stab the ball home after England goalkeeper Chris Woods fumbled a header from former Tottenham defender Neil Rud- dock two minutes into the second half. Sheringham, the premier league's top marksman last season with 22 goals, scored in the 36th minute from a fine through ball by busy midfielder Tinny.

Sam ways to make it a triumphant return for Ardiles to the club which sacked him 18 months ago. The goalpost denied Kevin Keegan's Newcastle an injury-time equaliser from a free kick by Liam O'Brien. Tottenham's Norwegian goalkeeper Erik Thor-stvedt, who made several fine saves during the match, then stopped Robert Lee's effort from the rebound. Aston Villa, runners-up last season, beat Queen's Park Rangers 4-1 with new signing Andy Townsend in fine form in midfield and big striker Dalian Atkinson scoring twice. But two of the goals came in injury time, and QPR had the best player on the field in England striker Les Ferdinand, who scored a Jirst-balf equaliser.

VsifnA Everton striker Peter Beagrie scored the first goal of the new premier league season in the 10th minute in a 2-0 win at Southampton. Ardiles's former Spurs mid-field partner, Glenn Hoddle, had a less happy premier league debut as manager of Chelsea, who went down 2-1 at home to Blackburn Rovers. Sheffield United made light of the departure of striker Brian Deane to Leeds for 2.7 million (SA5.9 million) with a 3-1 home win over promoted Swindon. This spring will see the return of Freedman's stable rider, Damien Oliver, on Naturalism should Dittman reject the mount on Bint Marscay. "We're quite happy for Damien to ride the horse," Silk said. Oliver had been the regular rider of Naturalism, partnering him to his Victoria Derby placing, but was replaced after the colt resumed in the autumn of his three-year-old year. Another "problem" facing Dittman is that at some later stage this spring he must decide whether he can fulfil an obligation to champion New Zealander Veandercross. One thing for certain is that Dittman is happy to have the Saturday meeting at Canterbury over and done with, with the Dittman will reunite with the filly in next Saturday's opening leg of the series, the $100,000 Silver Shadow Stakes, at Randwick before he decides whether to take up the Naturalism option or remain partner to Bint Marscay in the $75,000 Furious Stakes on September 4, the $100,000 Tea Rose Stakes on September 18 and the $250,000 Flight Stakes on September 2.

Naturalism's senior part-owner, Stephen Silk, said connections had an undertaking that Dittman would ride the horse this spring. "He may ride Bint Marscay in the fillies' races, but I don't think he would be riding her in the Cox Plate," Silk said. "I think hell give us a decision some time next week." Dittman found himself in a similar position last year with Simon Marshall filling in during his absence. Marshall won the Memsie on Naturalism on the day Dittman Mick Dittman has to decide between top filly Bint Marscay or outstanding galloper Naturalism. Perhaps this is accepted behaviour at the night cricket and rugby league games, but it would not be tolerated on an AJC course. As one STC stalwart commented: "The idea of young members is good as long as they're kept in their own compound." THE finishing speed of Pho-cian in the Toyota Parts Handicap at Canterbury was hardly flash. While promising, Phocian, according to Clockspeed, only recorded 25.74s for his final 400m. This hardly compared to March Hare, the three-year-old in the Premiere Stakes. March Hare, a likely rival for Phocian later in the season, ran his last section in 23.94.

up the Melbourne operation over the next 12 months. "By the spring of '94 we hope to have around 40 horses in training at Epsom," said John Hawkes, ramrod at Crown Lodge. Hawkes has more than 90 horses in full work at Crown Lodge, the Warwick Farm stable, but will send a team south where his son, Wayne, will head the operation. The Inghams have always had a few horses in Melbourne when Hawkes was in charge before coming to Sydney. The STC Young Members had a gala day for more than 200 at Canterbury pn Saturday but raised the ire "of some regulars.

By the final race, a good time had been had by all, and quite a few drifted into the members' Double Malt missed out on the Cups carnivals last year because owner Carole Richards went on holidays. Jockey Larry Olsen felt he was a Melbourne Cup candidate but Richards could not bear the thought of Double Malt racing in Australia while she was abroad. Trainer Les Bridge went along with the owner and turned him out after his most impressive success, the Wyong Cup. Judging by his performance in the weight-for-age Premiere Stakes at Canterbury on Saturday, connections are now going to benefit from the rest. Double Malt was having his first start since February 27, as he ended his autumn campaign after jarring a joint "It wasn't serious and we could Burst? A winner of the Grand Slam as a two-year-old, Burst did not have the same domination at three, but was certainly competitive with the top bracket, including Skating, the wipe-out of the day at Canterbury.

Trainer Clarrie Conners has Burst coming along nicely for a sprint campaign this spring. "Burst will be set for the Gadsden Stakes $301,000 down the straight at Fleming-ton," Conners said. Meanwhile his Melbourne Cup hope, Air Seattle, is progressing perfectly and will head south in the next couple of weeks. THE Woodland Stud syndicate, the major breeding and racing arm of "Chicken Kings" Jack and Bob Ingham, will build trailed the field by two lengths but went to the line in a sizzling 23.64s for the final 400m. Bridge intends to give him a sprint campaign heading towards the Epsom at Randwick before taking Double Malt to Melbourne.

Cup stayers do not generally have the acceleration of Double Malt and considering he can act in weight-for-age sprints with only 49.5kg, he is nicely weighted for the Melbourne Cup on November 2. The trainer is not concerned about receiving a penalty, as it gives him enough ballast to allow Larry Olsen to take the mount. Olsen was having his first ride on Saturday since scoring on Our Shockwave in June at Randwick. WITH Klokka and Flitting doing so well in the Premiere Stakes, what has happened to TENNIS LOS ANGELES, Sunday: Martina Navratilova felt in total control when she beat Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina 6-16-1 in 52 minutes in the semi-finals of the Virginia Slims of Los Angeles yesterday. Top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain beat lOth-seeded American Lori McNeil 7-5 6-2 in the other semi-final.

In Cincinnati, Ohio, US Open champion Stefan Edberg capitalised on world No 1 Pete Sampras' shaky serve to advance to the final of the million million) ATP tennis tournament Edberg won 6-7 (37), 7-5, 7-6 (75) and advanced to a final showdown with Michael Chang, who earlier beat Andre Agassi 7-6 (73), 5-7, 7-5. LACROSSE EDINBURGH, Saturday: Australia finished third as the United States retained the women's lacrosse world cup by beating England 4-1 in the final. In the play-off, Canada took the lead after only 30 seconds against Australia but were swept aside 14-3 as the Australians took third place. have gone ahead with him," Bridge said. "However the spring has always been considered his major target" Now a very robust five-year-old with only 25 runs on his record sheet, Double Malt went into the Premiere in better condition than any of his rivals.
