Green Guide Thursday 19 January 1989 SWITCH ON There are some good lines. Sta-cey insists that the development will create lots of jobs for the town. OUT OF Oh yeah, says a cynical Ailsa (Judy iNunn; "lackeys for the yuppies?" Not for sceptics Green Guide's daily selection of the best TV and radio now appears on Page 2 of 'The Monday to Friday. A Country Practice. Channel 7, 7.30pm (Also Tuesday).

SIAN WATKINS THE RATINGS are getting closer they begin on Sunday 12 February so the networks are bringing more of their top shows back to woo viewers in preparation for 'The Great War Of '89'. Derryn Hinch returns to his 7 pm current affairs show next Monday, followed by the first of the new season of A Country Practice. The following week, Simon Simon begins a new series (on Ten instead of Seven), Jana Wendt returns to A Current Affair, new series of The Cosby Show, A Different World (minus the pregnant Lisa Bonet), Who's The Boss and Growing Pains will go to air on Nine, Jo Pearson and Terry Willesee will return at 5.30 pm weekdays with Eye On Australia (the remnants of Live At 5), and Beauty And The Beast comes back to Seven in a new Friday time-slot JE HEAR that Seven has dell .1 cided to screen its new John Farnham concert spectacular, recorded in December at the National Tennis Centre, in mid-February to celebrate the return of the ratings. GRAHAM KENNEDY returns with his late-night news show, renamed Coast To Coast, on Nine on Monday 13 February. And Ken Sutcliffe could be there, too.

Although Nine has allowed Sutcliffe to return to his first love. Wide World Of Sports, his replacement, Los Angeles-based reporter John Mangos, might not be back in Sydney in time. Sutcliffe is tipped to hold the fort DONT expect Bert Newton's new lunch-time variety show on Seven to start too soon. Rumor has it that Seven will launch the show in mid-March, to coincide with 'The TV Week Logie Awards', which Seven will screen this year and which Bert will host. (HP Some of the team from Seven's enduring twice-weekly soapie, A country Practice', resuming on Monday at 7.30 pm.

Better than 'Neighbours' Home And Away. Channel 7, 6pm. SIAN WATKINS SEVEN'S daily 6 pm soapie begins screening on British television this year and one sort of hopes it does better than Neighbours because it does have a lot more going for it stronger, sparkier characters who speak realistic lines and who appear in rooms that don't look to have been lit by dozens of fluorescent lights. Home And Away did very well in its first year on television in 1988 garnering broader and stronger audiences along the way. At the time, executive producer John Holmes put it down to strong scripts, good stories and detailed production.

Just setting the program in 'Summer Bay' helps enormously what with access to pelicans, surf, and numerous outdoor scenes. In this year's opening episode, all the kids are getting their end of year results. Bobby (now she's a likeable girl with spark) gets a new lead in the search for her real parents, and Stacey (Sandi Lillington), overseeing a large residential development in the town which doesn't please the others can be a real nasty piece of work in the office. All she does is yell insults at Frank (Alex Papps) stand up for yourself Frank. YES, A Country Practice will this year become the longest-running Australian drama (in hours).

Yes, it's still Channel Seven's highest rating program; it has been sold overseas to Zambia, Indonesia, Burma and Europe on the Sky satellite channel. It has won 22 Logies and is soon to be dubbed for Spanish, French and German audiences. But I'm still a sceptic. Cathy (Kate Raison) milks her cows in the middle of the day (the sun's overhead), in make-up, and shining new Yakkas. Now, have you ever seen a farmer's wife go down to the shed in eyeshadow and blusher, or in overalls and gumboots that aren't coated with cow dung? Anyway, a flu virus has struck town, and the hospital is under seige.

The kitchen staff is sick, the district nurse is sick. Bob's lung collapses and some old dear (Lois Ramsay) gets pains in her chest Then Dr Alex gets crook (will a fever affect her They are going down like flies. The first episode for 1989 consists mainly of harried thermometer and stethes-cope checks. Like Neighbours, Country Practice has a claustrophobic feel to it based on too few people who all live in each other's pockets. It always amazed me that Charlene and Scott, two young, good looking things, spent their entire lives sitting in the kitchen talking to their Mum.

Country Practice could do with a few more extras. It would give the hospital a bit more credibility, anyway. Intensely Italian Drama Of Love. Channel 28, 8.30pm JENNY BROWN Well, let's hope the flu virus clears up soon otherwise we'll end up with weeks of inane conver-sations from hospital beds, although Dr Alex will be there for a while, given that she's coming down with pneumonia. But looking into our crystal ball Jo, who will marry Michael, -will get a lead on her mother's whereabouts, and Cathy's going to have to make a hard decision about the future of the farm wouldn't have to supplement my feed if my pastures were up to The scriptwriters are also going to look at teenage drinking, wife bashing, conservation, and steroids in sport.
