FIDGETY FEET, Lord Newry HoteL JAZZ FRIDAY ALLAN BROWNE, PAUL GRABOWSKY. Madigans. Brunswick. ALBUM REVIEW THE FALL Peel Sessions (Strange Fruit Records) nums priceless archival material from die BBCs John Peel vault is one of the Fall's -1 earliest studio ventures. But the nine years since the recording of these four tracks haven't dampened their vitality, freshness or acuity.

The record kicks off with an irresistible slice of Fall-billy, 'Put Away', anchored by MONICA KEIGHTLEY, Spaghetti Tree, BBC QUARTET, PJC. Ranelagh Club, 13 Fitzroy Nth. -IN THE POCKET, Cub Club. Baden Powell Hotel, Collingwood. MARK JONES Limerick Rosserdaie Cres, Mt Eliza.

FRANK TRAYNOR'S JAZZ PREACHERS, Spread Eagle Hotel. Richmond. Arms Hotel, Sth Melbourne. THURSDAY Yvonne Pawlett's electric piano motif. The venerable Mark Smith contributes his usual JANE CLIFTON, Reef Restaurant 126 Lt Collins St City.

CHRIS LUDOWYK'S SOCIETY SYNCOPATORSj Sir Henry Barkly Hotel, Heidelberg. KIT KAT CLUB, Tankerville Arms Hotel, Fitzroy. KYM FARBACH QUARTET, College droll commentary, while Martin Bramah's clangs perversely on his trebly guitar. "Mess of My', previously available only on bootleg, is an undiscovered gem: a cranky Lancastrian rap littered with sideswipes at the "caloried rockers" of the 1978 music industry. Bramah's arrangement contains more rhythmic quirks than are to found in the entire corpus of the Smiths.

The band then tear enthusiastically through their timeless 'No Xmas for J. Quay', a JAN TANKARDS DEADLY NIGHTSHADES, Lord Newry HoteL Lawn Hotel, Prahran. yuletide treatise in dope fienddom King Wencesias looked outSilly bugger he fell MISTAKEN IDENTITY, Cub Club, Baden Powell Hotel, Collingwood. Nth Melbourne. smith even squeezes in a plug for the Fall forthcoming debut album sure the album this song is on is in your Christmas The record closes with 'Like to Blow', a somewhat more throwaway garage stab. Like most of the records in the Peel Sessions series, this record's main interest is archaeological. But it's also a timely reminder that the Beasties, DMC and others of their ilk need not be thought so incendiary. At their best the Fall make most of popular music's "adventurers" sound positively inert GIDEON HAIGH Melbourne.

St Kilda (aft). WITCHWOOD, THE GOOD DROP, THE MOUNTAIN ROGUES, Mt Dandenong Hotel, Olinda. SATURDAY BLACKSPUR RAMBLERS, Sylvania SINGLES REVIEWS THE BLACK HOLE New Christs (Citadel) This noisy blurr shares its intensity and ability to pass through dense objects, like your skull, with the terrestrial phenomenon after which it is named. Psychedelic meowing guitars clutter the self-consciously loud sound and make for uncomfortable listening on a walkperson. Mighty aggro vocals and assorted explosion sounds build to a tumultuous climax, guaranteeing it a place in the nihilist top ten.

ANGELS DON'T CRY The Psychedelic Furs (CBS) A formularised and (regret and sorrow) croon that starts nowhere in particular and ambles around there for a bit A promising guitar and synth riff loses momentum when Richard Butler opens his mouth, but is saved from total wet-bandagedom by an atmospheric Interlude and interesting sax break. Rather limp performance from a bloke who purports to get his inspiration from Johnny Rotten. SUDDENLY Angry Anderson (Mushroom) Another el soppo effort from the now Mr Anderson. Angry-rotti makes a serious assault on the territory of Dame Joan Sutherland and Frankie Avalon with a bit of 'Dear Dolly' thrown in for sensitivity. The little fella sings oozingly about "the real me Just the way I a man in lerv, over tinkling pianos and what sounds like the MSO.

Could be the doughy result of too much head-banging. TALK DIRTY TO ME Poison (liberation) About as poisonous as an old footy boot, and sexism aside, this supposedly serious metal chant makes for enjoyable (novelty) listening. Carefully cultured "wild" guitar and "naughty" lyrics complement an infectious and bouncy tune. Band members Rikki Rockett and -De Vllle, whose press-shot makeup must have been applied with a trowel, look and sound as if they just stepped out of one of David Lee Roth's fantasies. I HEARD A RUMOR Banarama (Liberation) A pececcceececeeecchy keen little nite-clubber from the peroxide twins and token brunette.

More girls' school choir, safety-in-numbers, vocals, tame melody and pumped up synto backing. More banana than rama here, and would someone tell the silly gels that black and crucifixes are OUT. WENDY TUOHY Hotel. Campbellfield. COBBERS, La Trobe University Gum Tree BARWON HEADS Hotel.
