WEST MELBOURNE (BEHIND FESTIVAL HALL) Festival of fun for nursing home SUNSHINE City Council, with the promise of Federal Government support, has an $800,000 appeal under way to build a 30-bed nursing home in the western suburbs. The site of the new home will be on council-owned land in Station Road, Deer Park. The Federal Government has promised to contribute almost $1 for each $1 raised by the appeal. A multi-cultural festival during Easter could become a significant part of the appeal, which will run for two years. Sunshine's newly opened Westend Market and the committee of the Sunshine Community Nursing Home Appeal will recommend to council that a three-day festival at the market would give the appeal a signifi cant boost The proposal will be considered by council in the next few weeks. Managing director of the Westend Market, Mr Tony Cerantonio, said that the planned festival could become a multi-cultural highlight in the western suburbs and attract visitors from throughout the metropolitan area. He said that the plan envisaged 600 of the market's regular stall holders trading on Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, with added attractions including social and multi-cultural activities, exhibitions of arts and crafts, and locally organised entertainments, which could also benefit other western suburbs charities. "A festival based on their heritage and new style of life would be a welcome addition to the entertainment calendar of Melbourne," he said. Mr Cerantonio believes that the nursing home would be a boon to thousands of people who had begun their lives overseas, but had adventurously created new lifestyles by coming to Australia. Already the planned home has received the widespread support of more than 50 ethnic communities in the area. The mayor of Sunshine, Councillor Alan Solomano, said, "We have a responsibility to offer specialised care and accommodation for all elderly people in our area. "Our need for specialised care is greater than many other areas of Mel bourne because 48 per cent of people who will be eligible to live in the nursing home were born overseas." The theme of the appeal. Buy a Brick Support Sunshine Community Nursing Home, will soon be promoted throughout Sunshine with posters showing a brick with a $5 note on top of a stack of bricks. To safeguard the Government's proposed subsidy and the support of industry, the appeal must remain on target Organisers hope that the proposed festival, a revival of a former Sunshine Cooinda Festival, will help keep the appeal on target Donations to the appeal are welcome and tax deductible and can be sent to City of Sunshine, Nursing Home Appeal, PO Box 70, Sunshine, Vic. 3020. Ship design drafting student, Michael McRae with a computer-designed model. AT Footscray College of TAFE the emphasis is on giving students the opportunity to begin or renew their education at all points from leaving school to retirement and beyond. According to college director Graham Beanland: "We have to move on from the lock-step approach to education that most of us grew up with. "At Footscray College we are providing for people who need help with basic education right through to highly qualified people who need to re-learn in the light of new technologies. "We are reorganising some of our courses into associate diplomas, and negotiating with tertiary institutions so that increasingly, students will be able to come here to do a basic course, then get a job, gain extra qualifications here, or go on to further study at a university or advanced college." There's a number of different ways to study at Footscray TAFE part time or full time, day or evening, on campus or off campus, short courses or long. In 1987, the TAFE components at Sunshine and Essendon Technical Schools will become the Sunshine and Essendon Campuses of Footscray College of TAFE. "Three of Sunshine's trade departments, radio, automotive and panelbeating are new for us, so our apprentice training will be wider than ever. At Essendon we will be continuing a strong tradition in business studies, and at both we will provide new equipment and help develop new courses," Mr Bean-land said. Footscray College specialises in high technology engineering. In 1987, Computer Integrated Manufacturing will be introduced including a new Electronics Syllabus. "In areas like these we are providing both basic training and advance training for industry," Mr Beanland says. "The Division of Industrial Skills provides hands-on short courses in skills like crane and fork-lift driving, transport and earth-moving. We are the largest specialist provider in this field in Australia." A number of courses are designed to help people get started. At the Women's Learning Centre, students can try a variety of skills and ideas or a full time Adult Women's Bridging Program. Girls interested in technical work have their own bridging program. Participation and Equity Programs and courses for Government Trainee Scheme students are also available. A new one-year, full time applied science course will help those aiming for science-based jobs or study, and the college has a special department for adults who want to work on basic literacy, or strengthen their study skills. The Migrant Education Department helps migrants with English courses based on particular work or education goals, and there are opportunities to develop skills and interests through a wide range of community courses.
