P' It i ii Ut Xl eron, who drives a silver 1974 Alfa Romeo, and Valder with his Honda Accord will get their chance later this month to cast a vote in the Cameron-inspired residents referendum. In this week's Mosman newspaper, Valder wrote: "I've always wondered why so many Mosman residents have felt it necessary to ride around in four-wheel drive vehicles. "I'm now beginning to understand why. They are necessary to negotiate the increasing number of obstacles the council is erecting all around Mosman. In fact I can see the time approaching when all Mosman residents will need army tanks to get around.

At times I think there must be aldermen on Mosman Council who still refuse to concede that the motor vehicle has not just arrived but is here to stay." Lady Potter, above, was wheel girl in the cause of fundraising. Margaret Clark, below with Moffatt Oxenbould, bid up for the port. Just what is the secret behind the success of the ABCs early morning current affairs radio program AM, which first went to air 20 years ago today? If the yarns of drunken nights and hung-over mornings told at yesterday's celebration have any truth, it can be put down to alcohol and adrenalin. Together to make a commemorative recording were, from left, past AM personnel Red Harrison, Steve Cosser, Hamish Robertson and Robert Peach (first presenter), current presenter John Highfield, PM's Paul Murphy and reporter-now-politician Bob Carr. Not to be left out, past reporters Richard Carleton, Allan Hogan in Washington and Ray Martin phoned in anecdotes which will go to air at 10 am today on Margaret Throsby's show on 2BL.

i Snippets What this? nin 1 T- INuxnbcr Why did Housing Minister Frank Walker have a fake rustic leaf pinned to his suit at lunch yesterday? It seems that Today's People has uncovered a secret society possibly more awesome than the Fabians as the other dozen at his table also wore the leaves. As one of the rowdy party departed the Kwen Thai restaurant in Surry Hills she tried to shove her leaf down Walker's shirt. Our Thai mole, who was unfamiliar with this ritual, reports that Walker resisted. Billy Idol, now in New York, raged late Wednesday at Chasers, with six strippers helping celebrate his end-of-world-tour party. Billy said six comedians would have been better.

Sports colossus Rex Mossop is flabbergasted at two newspaper reports yesterday that he doesn't know the difference between Rome and Vienna. The Sitting, by Italian-born artist Marchese Nerll was snapped up for $170,000 at the Leo Schofield sell-off by art dealer Dennis Saville. Channel 10 sent 2DA YFM supremo Noel McGurgan a black bra this week to promote Saturday night's Madonna concert His response? Tve been on a diet for two months so the size 38C was an insult.

Todays People wonders if the Christian Brothers-educated McGurgan wants the 34B for Saturday night's Sleaze Ball or for Ted Noff's next Life Education fund-raising auction. In a warm display of political bipartisanship, and with just a few weeks left as Liberal Party federal president, John Valder has joined forces with ALP pollster Rod Cameron in the great Mosman speed-hump debate. The fellow Mosmanites Cam ation suit arose from an episode of Tlie Johnny Carson Show last year in which Carson said a study showed American dentists were going out of business.

"Imagine dentists going out of business. I haven't been so happy about a group disbanding since the Gestapo, Carson said. Mendelson wrote to Carson at the time: "To compare this group of 'doctors to a gang of sadistic and bigoted thugs is ludicrous." He demanded a "smirk-free public Instead Carson read Mendelson's letter over the air and cracked more jokes while standing under a marquee with lights that read "Michael Mendelson, Today's People never thought we'd see the day Lady (Primrose) Potter became a wheel girl. But with a finesse that belied her privileged upbringing, the public-spirited wife of financier Sir Ian spun the wheel for the Australian Opera fundraiser at the Inter-Continental Hotel. The night, with a Viennese theme and an auction, raised more than $23,000, with a bottle of 1885 Seppelts port going to Margaret Clark, wife of the Australian Opera's chairman, for $2,400.

The magazine, on the streets since 1946, will move to Australian Consolidated Press, the stable of Australia's greatest gambler, Kerry Packer. Incidentally, as Kill would say on another channel, readers miplil be interested in I May Alcott's little known Gothic thrillers published for the first time just a couple of years ago by Virago Press.
