There are many of my younger colleagues whom I can support with great confidence and The Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Mr Ben Humphreys, whose faction Is the Right, has also said he will step sure that he would be named Senate leader.

Some sources expected women's affairs to be elevated to Cabinet and said It would be logical to add the portfolio to the responsibilities of Mrs Ros Kelly, at present the Environment Minister. The women's vote was especially Important to Labor at the election, and sources say Mr Keating wants "gender representation" In the Ministry. Intense Interest centres on who will get the key Industry portfolio, which Senator Button held. Candidates include Senator Richardson who will return to the Ministry after having to step down last year over the Marshall down from the Cabinet and retire at the end of this term. A spokesman said yesterday that be remained willing to serve In his relatively glamor-less portfolio If asked, but he Is widely thought unlikely to be asked to stay on.

Government sources said that a consensus was emerging on who should be In the 30-member Ministry, before lobs were allocated. The Foreign Minister, Senator Evans, Is staging a battle to hang on to bis present portfolio and take over leadership of the Senate from Senator Button, who did not stand at the election. Sources predicted yesterday that Senator Evans was likely to stay In the Foreign Affairs Job, but were less Islands affair and the Tourism and Resources Minister, Mr Griffiths. Another person mentioned has been the Minister for Industrial Relations, Senator Cook. But he Is considered a less likely nominee, as Is the Minister for Primary Industries, Mr Crean.

The contest for the Attorney-General's position following the decision of the previous minister, Mr Duffy, to move to the back bench. Is also seen as open. Among the contenders are the Minister for Administrative Services, Senator Bolkus, Mr Griffiths and a former South Australian Attorney-General, Mr Peter Duncan.
