Heartfelt Orleans jazz here GRAEME OSBORNE t-fV NE Mo' Time' was the hit I musical based around 1920s jazz and vaudeville. It's also an apt description of tomorrow's concert at the Tankerville Arms when, after a very successful tour last year, we see the return of singer Topsy Chapman, clarinettist and alto saxophonist Sammy Rimlngton and Geoff Bull's Olympia Jazz Band for a night of the genuine article heartfelt New Orleans traditional jazz. Both Rimington and Bull are acknowledged as among the top exponents of the music playing today, not surprising after careers that include long spells both in New Orleans and touring the globe with the surviving New Orleans masters. The Olympia Jazz Band is completed by a group of equally devoted musicians and when combined with Topsy Chapman's vivacious entertaining, including her hit pieces from the above show, a very exciting night can be expected. Bookings on 240 9032 for dining, show tickets $15.

The peripatetic Paul Grabowsky returns home this week, in time we trust for his gig on Wednesday at the Limerick Arms with Sydney Rimington: genuine New Persuasive Gershwin pieces Topsy Chapman and Sammy Orleans jazzmasters. saxophonist Bob Bertles. Much Impromptu invention in the be-bop mode may be expected from this duo, particularly with backing from the splendid Ben Robertson and Allan Browne. Yet more world-class jazz at your doorstep. A steal at any price! Check on 690 2626.

New Melbourne Jazz Band fans should note the Railway Hotel, Chapel Street, Windsor is the new spot on Saturday nights. Clarinettist Andrew Firth, and his cohorts in the BBC Quartet play at Montsalvat on Sunday from 7.30 pm, presumably in the Great Hall: probably your last chance to catch them on this tour. On your way out to Eltham you could stop in at the George at the keyboard. As for An American in Paris', this has become one of the Gershwin standard repertory pieces, along with 'Rhapsody in Blue'. A far cry from its first reviews and the shrill, petulant notice from one critic, who described 'An American in Paris' as "Nauseous claptrap dull, patchy, thin, vulgar, long-winded and DAVE HETHERINCTON QUARTET, Templestowe Hotel (aft).

Jazz After Dark' at the Arts Centre features the very popular Kit Cat Club and Black Cat on tonight's bill, and tomorrow Swing City and Casual Sax take the stages at around 11 pm. $6 admission both nights.

Tomorrow's concert, conducted by Vladimir Kamirski, is part of the MSO's New Worlds series (a title, one presumes, is more attractive than Music that Is Slightly Adventurous and Not Brahms). Also on the program is Peter Sculthorpe's 'Port Essington', and Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances. An adventurous program, to be sure. SWING SHIFT with Btvtrwy Sheehan, Coach and Horses Hotel. Not so next week, when there is much on to tempt the Melbourne music-lover out of Spoleto-induced retirement. Tomorrow at 8 pm, for example, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, fresh from its rendition of Scriabin's "Poem of Ecstasy' (complete with lights and perfume, as originally specified) is performing two Gershwin pieces whose fame is justly deserved: 'An American in Paris' and 'Rhapsody in Blue'. The latter piece (soloist. Piers Lane) is persuasive in its melodies from the very start, when that clarinet glissando whines its way up the scale. The piece was originally to be called 'American Rhapsody' but Gershwin, at the suggestion of his brother, Ira, abandoned that.

He found inspiration at a New York gallery exhibiting works by James McNeill Whistler. If he could have 'Nocturne in Black and Gold' or 'Arrangement in Gray and Black', why not a musical 'Rhapsody in Blue'? TURN AROUND JACKSON, Nicholsons Hotel. Carlton Nth. VINCE JONES, IDs. Prahran.
