Fritzinger yof Fremont, received word the atter part of last week that he had inder.uone two operations on his eye the affliction being caused from having the flu while in France. He was conductor on the Northwestern railroad when the trouble came on him about three years ago and since has not been able to work on the road for that reason but doing clerical work instead.

His and friends hope that his vision may now be perfect again soon. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bishop and two children were Sunday guests at the Chas. Scoggins home.

Mr, and Mrs, Frank Sjolander, Lois and Mrs, Enoch Paulson of Jamestown, called at the Arch Neil home Sunday evening. Ruth Lavarre Neil spent Sunday afternoon with the Kendel girls. Haskett. in marriage last week. Congratulations. Ole Berg of Warwick is quite sick Mr. and Mrs.

Myler are caring for him as Mr. Berg lives alone. Wm. Van Valkenberg of Hardy and Mjsk Margaret Umrich of Durham, were united in marriage, June 4. They will be at home on the farm north of town this week.

We wish them happiness and prosperity through life. HIGHLAND AND VICINITY MAHASKA June has surely come. On Monday morning we learned the sad news of the death of Grandma Davis, near Pairbury, mother of Mrs. Bert Cordry. She had been sick for ,3 weeks and the grim reaper claimed her Monday.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Berton Cordry spent Wednesday with her mother, Mrs. Emery Hamilton. Mr.

and Mi's. Steve Maxson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Maxson and family, Mr. and Mrs.

A number of young people were present and all had a delightful time. Truman Walter, who has been working at Hastings, has accepted a position as salesman for the Ford company. He will be located at Grant, Nebr. Charles Woodkn who has been working at Ransom, spent Thursday and Friday visiting relatives here, returning to Ransom on Saturda.v. Ho i-eports that prospects are fine for a big wheat crop out his way.

Announcements were received last week of the marriage of Mrs. Harriet Walter of Concordia to William Harlow of Gillispie, 111. The marriage took place in Kansas City, June 10, Mrs. Harlow has many friends in this vicinity and her husband was formerly a resident of this county. Their marriage their relatives and friends, who wish them many happy years of wedded life.

They arrived at Concordia Sunday and will visit relatives here for a few weeks, Carrie Decker is visiting her sister, Mrs, Sadie Tate. Anna Pauline Loofbourrow is visit- inp at the Chas, Walter home. Another of interest to' this community took nlace Wednesday, when Elda Kelly was married to Harry Buor. Both people are well and favorably known in this community. They will be at home at the home of the groom's parents west of Norway.

We wish them much hap- Muriel Loofbourrow of Manhattan, who has been visiting her aunt, Mrs. Frances Fickol returned home Friday. Miss Loofbourrow has accepted a position with the telephone company at Salina, and will work there in the future. Mrs. Cora Young and Gladys were Sunday visitors at the home of Mrs, Theresa White in Scandia, Mi's.

Bernice Loofbourrow returned home Friday after a weeks visit with relatives at Manhattan, Mr, Mrs. Arthur Lorimor and children. Mr. and Mrs. John Young jind sons and Mr.

D. Pancake, of Greeley, secretary of the Mountain States Beet Growers Marketing Associiation, was in Belleville Saturday, on a tour to encourage the use of beet sugar in preference to foreign grown cane. Pancake declared that there is not the slightest difference between cane and beet sugar, citing chemists and domestic science experts as proof. His aim on this trip through Kansas is to encourage use of beet sugar, with its lower price, and thus put more land in Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas into sugar beet production- This, according to Pancake, assists farm relief, for it prevents over production of wheat and corn in those areas where beets are produced. REPUBLIC TO HAVE BAND? Republic, which has been without a municipal band for a number of years, is soon to have a musical organization of this kind, if the plans of Ed Randall, of Belleville, and the sicians of Republic materalize.

A movement was recently" started to this end, and with Mr. Randall, a prominent oi'chestra and band director, at the head the organization, should be a decided success. Bodies are now built in Shanghai where the trucks are to be assembled, The trucks will bo used in military service, being convertable to transport soldiers or supplies.
